I finally found one that came closest to what I get done in Korea! My hair is naturally very curly, which I know isn't common for Korean hair and can be harder to work with, but she did a great job. She evened out my previously multi-colored hair into one cohesive color and trimmed my bangs and layers how I like them. More than anything, the salon just feels like home. It's a small mom-and-pop shop, and I already know I'll be coming back regularly. They even have a Korean nail artist there, which is such a big deal for me... I prefer to keep it long and low maintenance since I don't style it often and wear it natural. I asked for a blunt cut with a little bit of face framing, no layers, and I wanted it to look thicker without adding layers since layers always thin out my hair. Additionally, I specifically wanted an Asian hairstylist who really understood my Filipino hair and I'm so glad I found Aki. She understood exactly what I wanted immediately after telling her and showing her a couple of photos of girls who had the same texture, thickness, and type of hair as I have. I really appreciate that she didn't wash my hair before the haircut. I prefer dry haircuts because it's easier for both the hairstylist and me to see how my hair will look in its natural, every day state since I don't style my hair often and wear it down most of the time. She did a dry haircut and intercutting so I left with the exact haircut I wanted -- low maintenance, trimmed off about three inches, blunt cut with a touch of face framing pieces, and it looks SO much healthier and thicker without adding layers that would have thinned out my hair even more!! It looks so nice in its natural state just the way it is. She really took her time and was very precise. I was out in just under an hour! On top of this, I appreciate that the entire time I was there, she did not try to upsell me on any products, and she understood that my natural hair is nice the way it is and only needs a cut maybe once a year, which is usually what I end up doing. The haircut was first, but my appointment started about 20 min later than expected since Kim was accommodating a client whom apparently arrived late, as Kim explained to me later. She tried to speak to me in Vietnamese most of the time, but my comprehension is that of a 5-year-old, so sometimes I had to ask her to repeat what she said in English lol. But for the most part, communication was fine. I showed her reference pictures for the haircut and said that I wanted the split ends gone, adding that she could cut off as much as she needed to as long as it didn't go above the shoulders. She did a great job with the cut and my hair was infinitely easier to brush afterward. Plus, she followed my directions and left a lot of length past my shoulders while still eliminating the split ends. As for the shampooing and facial, the session was quite relaxing, though a couple parts of the facial (probably the extraction part) were kinda painful. There was a moment where the water was a bit too hot for me, and I let Kim know, and she readjusted right away. So feel free to speak up if you feel uncomfy at any point! Bonus points that the products used did not break out my acne-prone skin, and my face felt very smooth afterward for weeks. Afterward, we went back to the stylist chair for her to blow-dry my hair and add finishing touches to my haircut. And after everything was done, I was curious about the price of a bayalage since the board prices were significantly cheaper than my local salons. I didn't intend to sound like I wanted a bayalage that day because the shop was closing in an hour and I had already been there for a long time. So I asked Kim about the bayalage while butchering the pronunciation of the word, and she didn't understand me at all and actually appeared upset at me. I felt bad that I ruined the vibe (because previously, we were looking at my freshly styled hair), and she told me to talk to Mary while she took another client. Mary understood I was asking about a bayalage and asked Kim in Viet about the price, and Kim still seemed upset even when answering Mary. And it turned out the price was the same as my local salons, so I just said, "Ah, okay." I paid for the day's services and was on my way to dinner afterward. All of that to say it was mostly a nice experience except for the very end with the potential misunderstanding.
