If you're a golf fan and have never heard of the WGC-Workday Championship at The Concession before,…read morethat's because it's a new name for an old golf tournament in a new location. This is what the WGC-Mexico Championship became. With the world still in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, this WGC (World Golf Championship) event, one of four held annually, returned stateside to Florida in 2021. This event is no stranger to the Sunshine State as it was held at the Blue Monster in Doral from 2007 through 2016. In those years, this event was known as the WGC-CA Championship (2007-2010) and the WGC-Cadillac Championship (2011-2016).
Tiger Woods has won this event a staggering seven times, his last win coming in 2013. Dustin Johnson has won this event three times. Ernie Els and Patrick Reed have two wins each. This year's winner was 2020 PGA Champion, Collin Morikawa. He won two Sundays ago, February 28, 2021 with a total score of 270 (-18), a nice, three-shot cushion over some great competition. Viktor Hovland, Brooks Koepka, and Billy Horschel finished T2 at 273 (-15). At age 24, this was Morikawa's fourth Tour win and his first win since his major victory at Harding Park last August.
Morikawa had a $1,820,000 payday, earned 550 FedEx Cup points, and 74 Official World Golf Ranking points. In professional golf, WGC events are among the most prestigious and, generally speaking, second only to the majors in terms of purses, winners' shares, and rankings points awarded. WGC events routinely draw the biggest names and best talents in golf.
I believe the WGC-Workday Championship is the first PGA Tour event to be held at The Concession Golf Club. The Concession is located in Bradenton, on the west side of Florida, about an hour's drive south of Tampa. It's a private course, with no houses lining any holes, co-designed by Jack Nicklaus and Tony Jacklin. The club got its name from the 1969 Ryder Cup when Nicklaus conceded the final putt to Jacklin, resulting in the first tie in Ryder Cup history. The Concession opened in 2006, 37 years after the concession it was named after. Like many, the club fell on hard times from the Great Recession, but it appears to have recovered - they got this event!
