I am pleased to see a critical location like the Margaret Todd Senior Center in Novato. The campus…read moreis large and offers sports for all aged enthusiasts. There are more than a few offerings for seniors from daily classes which can be found in the Novato Park and Rec booklet. If senior want an adventure, they can choose from trips to gambling casinos and other road trips from several turn-styles located in the lobby. This is also the location to rent Novato owned locations like the Novato City Council Chambers. I was pleasantly surprised to talk to friendly staff and see free donuts for seniors. The lobby is a wonderful sitting area for people to gather and hang out. There is a smaller gym in the main building and several rooms for activities. There is also a library. A gift shop is located in a nook of the lobby that features handmade crafty objects and second-hand jewelry, and household items. I bought a few amazing pieces of jewelry. This is a little boutique of what looks like a consignment shop. Check it out before X-mas. I would recommend that you take a walk around the large playing field or take an inexpensive dance class through park and rec Novato.

For the rest of us who are approaching "over the hill," this center is a hub of activity and offers a surprising array of classes, programs, outings and educational opportunities. The center is run by the City of Novato Parks, Recreational and Community Services department, and, in addition to the kinds of things you might expect from a center for seniors (bridge, bingo and billiards, to mention a few), there are great exercise classes for the young at heart, numerous events that encourage social connections, and they even have a small cafe providing lunch several times a week. This place is a great source of activity if you prefer to stay busy and aren't ready to start acting your age.

I had a great experience here as part of their immersive cane training program. The facilities are…read morephenomenal, and the staff is above and beyond helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. The food was wonderful, and they accommodated any need. I needed cane training, and I'm so glad I was able to participate in this program. Before going, I was fairly certain I was only interested in cane training and not in a potential future guide dog. However, GDB offers a guide dog experience to those in the cane training program, and I was glad to have the opportunity to compare traveling by cane and traveling with a guide dog. I found out guide dogs can be a big help in identifying obstacles at or near head level, which is an issue for me given my pattern of vision loss. So, though I was not entertaining the idea of possibly working with a guide dog at the outset, I became open to and curious about it through this great experience. I learned so much in just 5 days, I'm still stunned. I was provided with a report of my training and specific recommendations for next steps. I received it about a week after the training concluded. It was quite specific to my needs, and nearly two months later I continue to follow up on it. A month after training ended I also had a follow up meeting over the phone, which allowed me to clarify anything I had run into concerning cane travel since returning home. A wonderful experience! I highly recommend the program to those looking to build cane skills while also having an eye to possibly working with a guide dog in the future. Many thanks to all who make this program possible.
