You think I am getting to review a church don't you, well, you're wrong. It is for the Verboort Sausage feed. Held the first Saturday of November for the last 77 years and still going strong. We have been going to it for years now. We have stood in line as long as two hours and as little as five minutes. It is the good old fashion church fundraiser, potholder games, bake sale, plant sale and beer garden.
My recommendation to anybody new to this, is go get the meal tickets as soon as you get there, they have it down to casino precision. You buy your ticket and they will call you when your number is up, giving you plenty of time to go buy some really inexpensive, but good quality plants and drag them back to your car. I mean, who wants to eat with a blueberry bush on the table, right?
When they call your number, you line up and wait for them to clear the long tables and restock them with clean cups and silveware. They serve you a plate of homemade green beans, mashed potatoes/gravy, sausage, sauerkraut, applesauce, green salad and pie. It is all you can eat for $15. They walk around with buckets of sausage and kraut and trays of milk and coffee, so you won't wait long for refills. Some of the long time visitors bring their own mustard selections and I have been known to bring in a small bottle of maple syrup.... yeah, it goes really well with polish sausage.
It is a lot of fun and you get to visit with whoever gets seated next to you and the topic is usually, what is your tradition for coming? or how long have you been coming?
The nun's here are absolutely sweet ladies. Sister Claire, last year gave me her personal rosary for my son, when she saw me looking to purchase a cross for him at the table she was manning selling the same items.
I am from Kentucky and church picnics are on every corner all summer long, and there the main course is fried chicken, but this is some good sausage. They also sell it to take home at $5 lb. If you don't want to sit in the packed dining room, you can get a meal to go, it just won't be the all you can eat, which if I didn't mention includes all you can eat apple or lemon meringue pie. Had you right there didn't I? Visit the website and take a look for next year's festival. http://www.verboort.org/dinner/ read more
