It allows us to (in a fashion) walk on air and allows a simpler form of transportation from here to there. This bridge is one of those landmarks in my travels that says that I am almost in Mobile, Alabama.

The bridge is named after the neighboring Africatown community, which is considered one of the most important historical sites in the state. Africatown was formed by a group of West Africans who were among the last known group of enslaved people brought to the United States from Africa in 1860, just one year before the start of the Civil War. Following the war, many of the formerly enslaved people returned to the area, forming Africatown as a community of their own, in an attempt to preserve their cultural heritage and create a new life for themselves. The Cochrane-Africatown USA Bridge spans over the Mobile River, connecting downtown Mobile to the Africatown community, thus linking the city's history of slavery, resilience, and perseverance to the modern day. The bridge is an important symbol of the strength and endurance of the people of Africatown and acts as a reminder of the injustices they and many others faced. Over the years, efforts have been made to preserve the historical value and promote the cultural awareness of Africatown, and the bridge has played a key role in these efforts. It has been restored and revitalized with new public art displays that serve as a celebration of African American history and the cultural influence of the African diaspora. Additionally, the bridge has spurred economic development in the area, with increased access leading to new businesses and housing developments. Overall, the Cochrane-Africatown USA Bridge serves as more than just a transportation link between two areas of Mobile. It is a symbol of the historical, cultural, and economic significance of Africatown, representing the resilience and achievements of the African American community in the face of tremendous adversity. Bottom line: The ride was smooth, the view marvelous and I liked it so much I went back over it on my way home.

You can pick up all of your normal pamphlets here for tourist attractions, they will give you dinner recommendations, real estate magazines, etc. If you came here without doing much research or just want to know the best restaurants in town this is the place for you. They recommended the trolley tour around town which picks up right outside and we decided to hop on; definitely a must do for a background on the cities history. We event received some restaurant coupons for free items and discount dining! I appreciate a visitors center where you can tell they are proud to share their city with you!

There is an assumption that a visitor understands details of the various sights. Examples included 1) Magnolia Cemetery with its various unique burial places. We were lucky to find some of them without written directions. 2) The Mobile Carnival Museum's front door has a chain link fence across it because its entrance is on a one-way street that leads away from the museum (to reach it you have to drive around the block to find it). And, 3) the Museum of Mobile, on it literature says, open until 5 pm yet when you get there they open only to 4:30 on Mardi Gras Parade days. In this video you can see we were able to nuance those nuisances. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgA-u4Ai3ng Visitor's Center also recommended ride the Moda! a free bus that loops through downtown Mobile. You will find the windows on the cites free Moda! circulator bus to be a disappointment. It is a mini bus where all expenses were saved on glass. There were windows on both sides of the bus but the windows, especially the front were small. Thr front windows seemed designed for the just the driver to see out. Very disappointed. I wonder if the city bureaucrat who ordered those busses ever rode in one? Will admit I missed and avoided downtown Mobile after just one bus trip.
