Make it a day for hours of nature and to enjoy the great weather that the area provides. Defnitely wear good hiking shoes, make sure to bring water, your phone and/or camera, watch for wild animals and snakes and don't go alone if you're new. Otherwise, it's a very nice and cheap way to spend your day and get a little exercise.

A friend recently took me to Paradise Falls, and it was such a beautiful and peaceful experience…read more We started on the Teepee Trail where we saw a really cool teepee structure, then continued down to the bottom of the falls. The waterfall is stunning from below, and the view from the top is just as spectacular. Along the way we explored a small cave and passed two beautiful creeks. We even saw some ducks flying overhead, which made the whole hike feel even more special. After that, we hiked uphill on the Teepee Trail, stopped at Lizard Rock, and eventually made our way back to the parking lot. The views throughout the hike are wonderful and so peaceful there's nothing like disconnecting and reconnecting with nature here. Parking is free and the lot is fairly large (around 40 cars or more). There are bathrooms at the trailhead and also near the campground, which is very convenient. We ended up hiking about 5 miles. It took us 2 hours and 30 minutes of moving time, and about 3 hours total including breaks and photo stops. I highly recommend this trail if you're looking for a scenic and relaxing hike.

As it turns out, all of the harbor seals, and sealions have names. We befriended one named Steve, he is much better at swimming than I am. He also taught me secret techniques to paddling. This one Pelican named Parry got into a barking match with some sealions, which is a fight he wasn't gonna win, let's be honest. Though I was hoping to see an M-A-N-A-T-E-E ... next time! If you're gonna go down on Haley street, where the dogs are easy and the sun is cheap, you never know just who you'll meet, on Haley. (But hopefully it's Rachel from the Santa Barbara Adventure Company, and you get her kayak tour; shout out!)

For almost a decade now, I've been wanting to visit The Channel Islands National Park as it's one of the more unique US national parks which require a ferry ride to get over to the islands, so does require some planning. I booked the Santa Cruz Island kayak and snorkeling tour online and the process was simple and all instructions for the tour was laid out clearly and simply. It does recommend that you're intermediate level for both activities. On the day of tour, you do need to make sure you book your ferry tickets that coincide with the tour. You need to be on the 8am ferry out to be in time for the kayak and snorkel tour. They do have a harbor side 7:30am orientation and provide you with clear instructions on what to do as soon as you reach the island. Once on the island, another staff greets you, gives you another orientation and then you head over to the gearing up area. This took about 90+ minutes as you had to find the right wet suit, hood, mask, snorkel, fins, life vest, kayak jacket, and helmet. Note that a lot of the equipment is pretty well worn and I didn't have the best pair of fins (and forgot mines at home) as side clasps were sticky and not working properly. Masks also kept fogging up (and wished I had remembered my own mask). Wet suit was bit tighter than I like. You can use your own gear and next time when I come back, I'm bringing my own. Once everyone gears up, which does take awhile, everyone heads down to the shore and that's when we launch our kayaks, there are solos and tandems available. Kayak tour was great and we got to see at least 5 or 6 sea caves, a lot of fun! These sea caves are some of the most numerous in the world. I really enjoyed one of the sea caves that has a Green Room, water was gorgeous and so clear. Got to see plenty of cormorants, pelicans, sea kelp. I did get yelled at by one of the tour guides as he told me it was his fourth time having to tell me to zip up my life vest. I think it was a couple of times and not 4 but ok, I get it, safety first. It made me feel like a school kid again. I'm a pretty safe person and wished he could have been nicer about the information he needed to communicate to me. We then had lunch on a small beach and then geared up to snorkel. The water is fairly cold, probably around 60ish, so a 7mm wet suit and maybe more would be good. I wished I had some gloves and forgot my booties, which would have kept me a tad warmer. We snorkeled/swam for about a mile, saw snails, sea urchins, fishes, anemone, etc. We sort of lost time at the end of the tour and really had to rush to get back to our original point and we all had to kayak pretty quickly back. And to top if off, had to really work fast to get out of all our gear and wet suits are never easy to get out of. Made it in time for the ferry but barely and got stuck with some of last seats available on the ferry back. I feel like the timing of that could have improved. Overall, a very good experience just with some issues that could be improved one. Highly recommend this tour! I would do it again!

Five stars with a caution‼…read more The writers of the reviews here must be totally fit‍‍ My husband and I were dying on the trail coming back from the grotto area. It was almost all incline, like no joke. Our dog was so tired (She's young and only two.) she quit walking at one point refusing to move! Another disappointment was that we weren't even able to get to the grotto area, which involved some rock climbing, because we had our dog.‍ With that said, however, the view was spectacular, and it was a great hike (going to the grotto, not on our way back!). I loved the streams and watching the tadpoles! (I don't remember the last time I'd seen tadpoles,) It was wonderful to experience such beautiful nature not so far from the middle of the city. To sum it all up; the full hike is highly recommended for people who are fit. But, I'd say to the people who aren't that fit (like us!), just to enjoy the hike up to the first stream and waterfall then turn back. You'd not enjoy the hike coming back from the grotto!

Wow what a BEAUTIFUL hike! There's a bit of everything on this hike…read more PARKING: off YERBA BUENA, look for CIRCLE X RANCH , it comes up quick so be ready! Windy road for those with motion sickness issues be aware. Parking is free, there's a toilet and water fountain to fill bottles as well. There's 2 ways you can go, this hike is a loop. We started off going west down hill past the little lodge with the pay phone. Once you get to picnic tables down the trail you'll see a fence, go past the fence and down continue on the trail. You'll get to boulders and there is the grotto! This trail is pretty toddler friendly however, we did not take our toddler down to the grotto Due to the fact that there is bouldering involved, and at one point, there's a rope that you need to be able to "climb"to get down into the grotto area. The friends we went with were able to go, and they said that it was very cool down there and definitely worth the hike. Some people said that they spotted rattlesnakes we didn't see any however.

We did Circle x to Sandstone and it was an incredible journey. My husband and I felt so accomplished after hiking 6 miles and climbing 3,000 feet in elevation. The last time we went, we took the kids, so we weren't going to get to the top of Boney mountain that day. Instead, we parked at the end of Wendy Drive and hiked over to the Chumash Indian center. Apparently you don't have to do this and can park closer and walk on a paved road right up to the center if you want. That's OK though, it's a nice short hike and we saw a lot of wildflowers on the way. (We also had to get out of the way of mountain bikers, so watch out!) When we got there, we toured the Indian center, the kids played with all the stuffed animals and explored the kid-friendly things they had on display. They had lots of books on the area and the Chumash culture. We were interested in one of the red flowers we saw on the trail (couldn't remember the name of it from our college botany class) and asked one of the guys working there. They happily explained what it was and told us where we could see even better flowers on another trail. Then we went outside and sat in the Ap (the incomplete Chumash hut) and had lunch. After lunch, we walked through the little garden they have planted with indigenous plants and by then the little ones were getting tired so we headed back. It was a nice little hike. We saw lots of people on the trail since it was a Saturday, lots of dogs and mountain bikes. The cultural center has a water fountain and restrooms and when we were there they had some water bottles and power bars for sale. We hiked out to Paradise Falls, and while the view from a distance had me thinking, "That's it?"... once you get closer, it's actually beautiful. The weather was in the 80s, with the cool breeze made the hike so much more enjoyable (especially on the steeper parts). My pup had the best time too! I would've loved to let him run free, but this isn't an off-leash park. What I really loved is that there are so many different trails. Whether you're in the mood for a quick walk, a jog, or a longer hike, you'll find a route that fits. There were lots of people out enjoying the scenery, and the nearby town has plenty of cute spots to grab a bite afterward. It was such a fun outing. I would totally do it again!

The travel agent was very nice but ultimately frustrating. I had given her a typed agenda of what…read moreI needed and we set a date for an appointment when everything would be done. I was leaving for Portugual very soon and wanted this later trip all finalized before I left. On the day of our appointment I was sick but it was the only time in my schedule to meet with her so I kept the appointment. She had done no work on our very long and complicated trip. I had to sit there for two hours while she did the work when I was sick and even then she said she had an appointment to go to and could I come back later that day to finish the job. I did so but we were still not finished. It was very unsettling, especially as I was sick and worried about being able to go to Portugal when I was ill. I must say that the travel agent did make efforts to answer all my many questions but I was still not happy with the company because I had to check and double check and change seats on almost all the flights because she had not given me the seats I asked for and also my husband and I were not put together on one of the flights, although we made the reservations months ahead of time. I had also stated that I wanted plenty of time to get from the Montreal airport to Boston for our flight to Ireland but she had not given us any wiggle room for a late flight at all. The flight was late which we later found out was common and thus we missed our flight to Ireland. We were required to be at the gate 45 minutes before the flight and with the plane being even a half hour late we were not allowed to board. In order to get to Ireland on the day we rented our car we had to fly to another airport and take a bus to the airport where our car was. Because we were late the car we requested -- an automatic -- was given to someone else and we had to take a standard. While we were used to driving a standard, it was much harder to do so when driving on the left and I could not do so at all because of arthritis in my hand. Eventually we were able to exchange the car for an automatic but we lost time in doing so. While the travel agent was sweet and polite, I felt she was not entirely up front with me and I resented that I had to sit with her for two hours while she did her work when I was sick and I had taken the time to set up an appointment with her in the first place and then that she asked me to come back the same day. I also resented that I had to call all the airlines two and three times to make sure we had the seats we wanted and even after that there was a glitch. I will never again use a travel agent.
