We were back in Alaska after so many years and wanted one last night out before leaving the state again, so we thought this place would be perfect for a final hurrah. At first, it felt refreshing to see something new instead of the usual old Anchorage staples like Koot's. Rough around the edges, sure, but at least there you can usually get acknowledged by a bartender without having to perform an interpretive dance for attention. That excitement evaporated the second we went to order drinks near the stage. My brother stood in line waiting to buy us drinks, only to be repeatedly ignored while the bartender served people who walked up after. Not once. Multiple times. He tried politely flagging someone down like a confused NPC in a video game with broken programming, and still nothing. The cherry on top? The same bartender who refused to serve him had absolutely no issue continuing to serve two girls who were visibly beyond drunk, stumbling around, nearly falling over, and spilling their shots all over the bar like a deleted scene from a low budget reality show. Watching that happen immediately after being ignored was honestly mind blowing. Not only was it rude and unprofessional, it felt wildly irresponsible. Overserving people who can barely stand is not "good vibes nightlife," it's a liability waiting to happen and something that should genuinely be looked into. What makes it even more frustrating is that both my brother and I work in the service industry. He's a restaurant manager and I'm a cook, so we fully understand how stressful and chaotic these environments can get. We know what it's like to be slammed, exhausted, and juggling multiple people at once. This wasn't that. This was just flat out dismissive and uncalled for. We finally gave up and went to the food side, where the service was actually fantastic. The bartender over there treated us like human beings, so we tipped well because competence deserves recognition these days. Honestly, the only reason I'm giving this place two stars instead of one is because of the service on the food side. Without them, this would have easily been a one star experience. And that's what makes this place so frustrating. Williwaw has so much potential. It's the kind of venue Anchorage desperately needs. Lively, modern, full of energy, in a location that could genuinely become iconic. But the rude, dismissive service drags it down like combat boots in wet cement. But it's not even close to free anymore, if it ever was. We ended up buying a combination ticket (one of the two 30-minute shows plus the 15-minute show about th 1964 earthquake) for $11.95 each. That sounded pretty steep for 45 minutes of edutainment, but we figured that it was worth it to get some exposure to some of the Alaskan sights that we didn't get to see from our cruise excursions. But the quality of the films was mediocre. Of the two thirty-minute films, we chose the Journey to Alaska and Northern Lights Adventure double feature, but in retrospect we should have chosen Alaska Wild! since we were interested in animals. Our film played like a 15-minute infomercial for the Alaska Tourist Bureau (I swear, "Come to Alaska" was uttered at least a dozen times in various forms) followed by a 15-minute docu-mercial about/for some photographer who specializes in shooting the aurora borealis. Don't get me wrong--the footage in both films was beautiful; it's just that the narrative content was superficial and uninteresting. And kind of awkwardly commercial. I enjoyed the earthquake film better, although it is extremely dated. However, the content was interesting and I felt that they did the subject justice in the short time frame. A seismographer explained the physics of earthquakes and the geologic situation in south-central Alaska; several eyewitnesses related unique accounts of their experiences; and original footage and photography illustrated the terror and destruction of the event. The gimmick here is that the small grandstand lurches and shakes for half a minute or so during the show, to mimic the earthquake experience. It was fun, but it didn't add much, and I was kind of annoyed that the noise of the mechanism completely drowned out the film narration during that time. The earthquake-related displays that they have in the lobby help to flesh out the story of the event and are good for killing time until your show. The people are nice and they have a small snack/gift shop...but there are probably better and/or cheaper things to do with 45 minutes in Anchorage.

There's a nice boardwalk that encircles the pond which is filled with lily pads. As we walked around the lake we saw baby ducks swimming which just added to the serenity of the nature outside. Inside the venue there's a kitchen/bar and an upstairs area which was used by the bridal party to get ready - and hide from the groom! Views from the balcony are just beautiful! Flowers, trees and mountains. It's really breathtaking! You are responsible for cleaning up and table decor. The owners were very kind! My favorite thing was he fact that with the customers consent, they will donate the center pieces to the nursing home nearby.

The woods cannot remove the noise of the city, but it does remove the scar of roads and urban slam. The space itself is clean, and spacious. I recommend starting on the top floor (5th) and working your way down; the progression feels natural and keeps the experience from becoming overwhelming. One floor in particular is a gem--a joint Smithsonian/Alaska exhibit on the many Indigenous tribes of Alaska, featuring objects long squirreled away in D.C. and now thoughtfully displayed closer to their home communities.
