Sawanna (pronounced, "Savahna") is one of Berlin's many "Spätkauf" (pronounced "shpeetcowf"), or…read moreSpäte ("shpeety") for short. Späte are kind of like NYC bodegas - they sell an almost bizarre collection of goods and services, and they're open late night. Sawanna is no exception; they sell the core Späte items - coffee and alcohol - but also offer print services, because I guess that's something you might need at a 24hr shop whilst sipping beer.
It does appear to close at least the outdoor area at some point, maybe midnight, but I think that's just to comply with a Berlin noise ordinance.
The coffee is a bit weaker in flavor than I'd prefer, but it is fun to visit something so unique. I'm told Sawanna is also a little famous, with a few celebs visiting. The vibe there is definitely fun, with friends enjoying coffee or beer on nice days and then late night same though a bit more boisterous.
Sawanna appears to be located in a gay district, specifically a Bear district, centered on a club around the corner called, "WOOF."
The neighboring Italian place, Da Lucia, is quite tired of Sawanna patrons buying there then sitting at his tables without giving him any business - so don't be a jerk, and don't do that!
