I love this well established chemist mainly for it's very friendly, well informed staff who have never been anything but genuinely helpful on each occassion I've visited. It does'nt matter if you want to buy or are just looking for advice, you will be treated with courtesy & respect, and not made to feel uncomfortable as I've sometimes experienced in some of the large well-known department stores. This is the place to come if you want advice on a make-over, or to try out various skin products. Usually you will need to book an appointment, but often you can just pop in & one of the experienced staff will willingly oblige you there & then. As an added bonus you will often be offered some free beauty samples, but if not, just ask! A perfect example of one of my recent experiences is that I popped in for a sample of a certain foundation but they didn't have any availableso instead of just turning me away, as many would do, the consultant took one of the products from the shelf and transferred some into a small container for me. Now that's what I call real customer service - and all done with a smile!

There were books at Hereford Cathedral long before there was a 'library' in the modern sense. The cathedral's earliest and most important book is the eighth-century Hereford Gospels; it is one of 229 medieval manuscripts which now occupy two bays of the Chained Library. Why were the books chained? Well books were valuable and this stopped them being stolen. Hereford Cathedral's seventeenth-century Chained Library is the largest to survive with all its chains, rods and locks intact. The books have a chain attached and then they are attached at the other end to the shelf. This means you can carry them to a desk and read them but that is as far as you would get with them. No way to pop them in your bag and go. :0) The new display shows how it was originally and is available for research (you can just visit and look). I have been priviledged to study in many great libraries but this one does not have guards standing over you as you can't nick them. There has been a working theological library at the cathedral since the twelfth century. The Mappa Mundi is a medieval treasure, quite large and quite fascinating. (and amusing). It is a map of the world as 13 th century scolars thought it was. The map bears the name of its author 'Richard of Haldingham or Lafford' (Holdingham and Sleaford in Lincolnshire names and spellings change over the centuries). Recent research suggests a date of about 1300 for the creation of the map. Superimposed on to the continents are drawings of the history of humankind and the marvels of the natural world. Here be dragons..wonderful. This is probably the most important map in the world. C'mon history can be fun!!!
