I really like when strangers call me "honey," "sweetie," "darling" or, especially from Spanish…read morespeakers, "mija." (This one has the added benefit of making me feel young.) The woman who rang up my two bottles of wine at this Kroger called me "darling" no fewer than five times during our four-minute interaction, and I loved it. As if we were continuing a conversation we had left off earlier, she also jumped into the middle of a story about a man who was looking for tomato sauce. I didn't follow but just went with it all. By the time I left the grocery store, gripping a bottle of red in each hand like a wino, I felt like I had gained a friend in Wheeling. My Kroger visit happened because I tried to visit a wine store in downtown Wheeling that didn't actually exist. Undeterred, I stopped into Kroger to see what was what in the wine section. They were actually having a huge sale, with many good bottles under $10, so I grabbed a Malbec and a Cabernet. The sale was so good that I wanted to go back and grab a few more bottles, but I resisted. I was visiting from out of town, and there's only so much room in the car for wine. This Kroger is a little hidden from the road, and you need to make some turns to get into the parking lot. But once you get to it, it's a nice little Kroger with nice people.

Within 5-10 mins, we had covered every inch of every shelf and fridge space and overfilled our hand basket. We had steaks, pork chops, burger patties, candies from the Amish. We took bets on the final price and were all surprised when it rang up at $198. We grabbed more steaks, cheesesteak thin sliced beef, and one container of caramel peanut clusters to hit $251.49. The staff were friendly and patient. The inside of the market is small and can get cramped feeling when it's busy. It's not flashy and it's not aesthetic, but the meat is fresh and the prices are decent. The parking lot is right out front.

Only problem was I got the closing time wrong for Saturday. I arrived past 5pm thinking they remained open til 6pm. Nope. Closed already. A guy (non-employee) who helped direct me to the market and opened the door for me found they were closed but then let me know the employee was going to let me in. This employee was Pat. Talk about being ultra kind. She let me shop and even helped me with what products to buy -- like the onion and watermelon. Thank you, Pat!
