The staff are very knowledgeable. We participated in two classes, learning a lot and getting answers to several perplexing garden issues. Their expert gardeners were very friendly and eagerly shared their knowledge with us. We learned that many landscapers, including Chatham Bars, source their plants from Beacon Gardens. The prices are very reasonable and are in line with other centers. Given the outstanding quality of the plants Beacon offers, this is a great value!

Just want to shout from the rooftops how wonderful this place is!…read more Today I stopped by for the first time this summer and found a plastic sort of used pot I wanted for a specific reason. I went to the counter to ask to buy it even though I knew it was not an item of their inventory. I was asked to show the salesperson where I found it, and as I showed her she said, "oh just take it, it's not worth anything and we have plenty of them, just take it!" That kind of understanding of the customer and her needs is the most valuable skill ! I shall be back tomorrow and from now on and I will be BuYIiNG! I'm going to attach a photo of why I needed the old plastic container.

By far the best nursery on island. Most of the plants are grown here from seed--so they grow on…read moreisland and are ready for planting. Unique to Heather Gardens is the sense of locale (and therefore local); you can buy small and grow, annuals, perennials, herbs and vegetables. For residents or long-time summer residents this is really helpful to buy to grow not just to beautify for today. this results in much better pricing than other nurseries on island but yes some extra work. We have purchased larger plants, some from off-island here (like our favorite roses and hydrangeas) and they have been much more suited to this climate than those we purchased at other nurseries. ESPECIALLY the hydrangeas. Usually they are in root balls not those ubiquitous blue plastic containers, so they adapt to the transplanting better and mature quickly. It is easy to load your car, with both plants and the manure/compost/mulch options. They will help if you ask--but generally they leave you alone to enjoy unless you ask for help. We transferred our garden purchases to Heather Gardens several years ago and have been able to have many more plants (we are willing to purchase when they are small) and more interesting plants / less common plants then the standard gardens on island. This is a nursery for gardeners--if you are looking for garden decor or instant beautification it has some options--but that is not the focus.

During one visit, we actually helped another customer load up some mulch in her car. The staff saw us do this and we've all been best of friends ever since. It paid off to our advantage as we later found a plant we wanted but wouldn't fit into our car. One of the staff said, 'no problem' and offered to deliver it to us. Not only does the team rock at this location, they also have a great selection of plants. They obviously don't have the space to offer as much as the Edgartown location but they make up for it with their service and can-do attitude!

It must have been stored in a mulch filled bog. Much of it is black in color, presumably because it was stored mixed with dirt and rotted mulch. Do not buy this junk. And if you do, at least don't pay by credit card over the phone like I stupidly did. Wait until they come and take a look at it before they dump it on your driveway! A couple pics for your viewing enjoyment. I don't know whether all of their wood is this way or they just decided to send me the junk that was sitting forgotten in a trash heap. There is cheaper and much better wood available on the cape. You have been warned.
