    Herron's Reach

Blackpool once was a golden town. As a kid I have fond memories of glittering promenade lights and…read morepleasure beach heaven. Those are distant memories and the city is no longer seen as golden. These days the reputation of this seaside town has taken a bit of a battering. Stag weekends, dirty beach, chav culture and lack of high-end consumer friendly conditions has led to it being pigeon holed as a hole of a different kind. I can't say it has turned a corner completely, not yet anyway but I am here to report a different side to Blackpool which begs for it to be removed from this pigeon hole immediately. A close family member is moving here for a job for the next couple for years and helping them find a decent property has led me to discover another side to the town. Did you know for example that a De Vere property is present here in Blackpool called Herron's Reach? You know what... it's only five minute drive from the beach and this area of Blackpool will blow you away. Nestled between Blackpool Zoo, Victoria Hospital and Stanley park lies this stunning 230 acre hotel resort. While only being a stone's throw away from the hustle and bustle of the beach, this is a completely secluded oasis which is one of the best hotel options in Blackpool. The spa and golf facilities are great albeit both not my cup of tea. The rooms are comfortable and homely with stunning views of the parkland and golf course. There are 172 of them so you shouldn't have too many problems booking a room. The premiership is being graced by Blackpool's presence this year so I expect business might be good this year. The dining options are great also, the brasserie serves up a treat or two with great British cuisine made with fresh locally sourced ingredients. There is also the option for foodies after modern classical cuisine with Nineteen bar and restaurant where I recommend you get a deck table overlooking the golf course. It really is an absolute delight this place. I realize it might take a while for the town to shed its bad image but pay this venue a visit and it will go along way towards bringing that gold back!!

We had heard about the food was very good but it was beyond our expectations !! There is an excellent Chef who's home made fancy cakes are delicious! We will definately be returning again next year and have already recommended it to many friends and family.

We had read on Tripadvisor that the food was very good but it went beyond our expectations !! Tony is an excellent Chef and his home made fancy cakes are to die for. On the evening of Mum's birthday Tony and Mike had decorated the dinning room with balloons and banners and they had bought her some flowers and a lovely card, it really made her day, many thanks to you both for making our stay so special. We will definately be returning again next year and have already recommended it to many friends and family.

Northern Star Hotel - Comfy bed

The rooms are clean and well-equipped (small flatscreen TV, en suite, enough storage for your clothes, plus a water kettle with instant tea and coffee). The bed was okay, and the en suite bathroom also very clean. Water pressure for the shower (always a concern in small, older hotels) I also found more than adequate. The staff were extremely welcoming. There's a small breakfast room (breakfast is included in the modest fare). You'll even find an ironing board in the corridor available to all guests. Room service is only available on request though. Many nice pubs within walking distance, also not far from the nicely restored North Pier. As a budget option for Blackpool, I'd highly recommend the Northern Star.

The owners were super helpful, allowing me to check-in early on arrival, and storing my case after check-out, rather than me lugging it around town all day until my evening train. The bar and breakfast room have been given a funky retro makeover with a lick of paint and stylish accessories transforming hideously dated anaglypta, and the whole place is a fresh sunny yellow in the hall, with new carpeting throughout. A full cooked breakfast is included in the room price, which swayed my decision to book. Vegetarian and vegan offered too! (Veggy here). Cooked breakfast aside, there is a buffet style help yourself option, cereals, toast, breakfast bars, tea/coffee and juice. My one gripe would be the plastic cups for juice, with single use plastic such a nightmare, could they really not stretch to proper glasses? My single room was small, but I expected that, as a shared bathroom booking it was a handy bonus to have a sink though. The tiles were falling off the wall, and the over-mirror light didn't work, but when brought up to owner, I was assured the refurb would sort that anyway. The bed was really comfy, but I did need an extra pillow, which was no problem. Kettle with usual tea/coffee sachets. My room, 13, faced the back of Funny Girls, and I did find it to be a bit noisy from there, or pubs nearby, so pack earplugs. There is free WiFi but I found it terribly spotty and slow. The hotel is literally yards from Blackpool North Station, and very handy for the big Sainsbury's, local nightlife, and is a short walk to the Promenade and town centre. Would certainly book again.

The room was acceptable, there were a few cracks here and there but nothing deal-breaking. The views from the room were excellent and the room itself was very large. Breakfast was okay, we had paid extra for it on the first few nights but decided against it on the last. If you do decide you want breakfast, be sure to include it when you book rather than adding it later otherwise you'll pay more. The staff were very polite and helpful. They made sure everything was to our satisfaction and even delivered drinks to us in the Spa. The Spa itself was very nice, similar to the type of Spa you would find in a Gym almost. We were lucky when we went and it wasn't very busy so we had the Spa pretty much to ourselves. Parking wasn't an issue. I am usually very picky where I park my car however there was a secure open car/coach park right on the doorstep and I could see my car from my room window. Overall a very good experience and we will definitely be using this hotel on future visits to Blackpool
