I used Visiting angels for about 1.5 years to support my father who had alzheimers. I would NOT…read morerecommend them. I realize there are few options so you may not have a choice. They are one of the most expensive options in the are- so you would expect they would receive good care. This is not the case. The majority of the hourly rate goes to the blonde ladies who run the office - of the $36+/hr I paid, the majority of the caregivers made $12-$14/hr. You have to cycle thru the caregivers to find the ones you can count on. They staffed my shifts with many caregivers who lived 1.5+ hours away - they would show up once and never come back (of course - it isn't worth $12/hr for a 4 hour shift - when you have to include gas, travel time etc). This isn't the staff's falt, it's the agency's fault. And then I had to waste time training these people who never came back. If they tell you they care coming to do a "meet and greet" with a new caregiver, it means they have never met this person, and they are meeting them right before they start with you to "train" them on their system and give them their id's etc. They have zero track record with this person. None of these people who were "meet and greet"s worked out for me. So you have to pay $36+/hr to cycle thru to find the better caregivers that hopefully you can count on. I lost two decent caregivers from that agency because they were treated so poorly by the main staff. Eventually, when I realized how they worked, I started asking - has this person worked for you before? The last staffing I was told - yes, this caregiver had worked for them before. As it turned out, this was a bold faced lie. The caregiver lived 1.5 hours away, had no training as a caregiver, and showed up only for 1 shift - which was a waste of my time and money training him. He had never worked as a caregiver before - not with Visiting Angels, not with anyone. When I called to say - you lied to me, I was understandably upset. I put conditions on who I would have come - that I know how long they had worked for them, what their background was, etc. This was not welcome by visiting angels. When they realized I was no longer going to pay to cycle thru their caregivers, they fired me. Which of course was a gift. Another lovely bonus was the time one of the blonde ladies showed up to "check on my dad" while the caregiver was here. I was working in another room. I had never met her before and neither had my father My father was in the bathroom getting ready. As opposed to waitin until he finished shaving, dressing etc. she had the caregiver bring her back to his bathroom. No one asked my dad's consent. They do not offer the basic human respect to to their elderly clients. You may not have a choice. Just know what you are in for and be deliberate when working with them. They will pimp you for a 5 star review. And you have to pay right away - they will not wait for reimbursement from your Long Term Care insurance provider. So you have to front all the money. In hindsight, it would have been better to find an independent caregiver.

My doctor told me I would have to go on disability and would never have any significant use of my arm again. I told him "disability is not an option. I will work for a living." He laughed and put a steak dinner bet on when I would file. I cashed in on that bet and enjoyed the steak! Fortunately, the great staff at Teays Physical Therapy worked with me to prove my doctor wrong. It was a tough, but loving regiment, that I worked diligently. Seventeen years later, I am still using my arm, and can do most everyday tasks! My ability to throw a ball is greatly impaired, but I am grateful that I wasn't a professional athlete and don't need that skill to make my way through life. Cindy Skiles is a visionary professional who hires great people that attain great results. I have returned to Teays for therapy after a minor car accident. Another great experience.
