The Viktualienmarkt is an attraction in itself, but it is also a great spot to go for lunch in the middle of a day of Munich sightseeing. There are plenty of options, so you can find something to suit everyone in your group. Even horse sausage. True story: My friends and I had entered the market only a few minutes before, staggered by all the choices, trying to figure out what to get, when out of the diminutive shop in front of which we happened to stand--not much more than a glorified shack, really--stepped a small old woman. Her face was very wrinkled, but practically beaming, as she approached us to offer her absolutely unsolicited advice. Unlike with most Müncheners, there was a severe language barrier, but in the course of a few moments' conversation, between her very broken English and my toddler-grade German, her message emerged: "Go in here. Get the horse sausage. You won't regret it." Eh? Horse sausage? We shuffled our feet and drawled equivocatingly. Then I figured "Eff it. When in Rome, brother." So my buddy Amit and I stepped into the shop while our three more timid friends remained outside. It looked just like any butcher shop--a long glass cold case full of chops, steaks, sausages, ground meat, etc. None of the clerks spoke any English, as we stood there asking "Horse? Horse sausage? Cheval? Horse? Anyone?" Thankfully there were some buddies of one of the clerks hanging out there, one of whom spoke English and cheerfully stood to our rescue. "Which is the horse sausage?" I asked. The friend translated. The clerk, looking confused, asked a similarly phrased question back to the friend. "Ja," said the friend. The clerk turned back to us and swept his arm across the entire store. "Horse. All horse." Wow, we were in an all-horse butcher shop. I knew then that this was going to be one of the most sublime experiences of my life. I felt like a total rube, but inside I was smiling enormously. So we asked for whatever horse sausage the old lady was talking about, and what they dished up was actually a mega-sweet deal--for two euros we got two short, fat sausages out of a crock pot, with a crusty roll and some mustard on the side. It was a damn cheap lunch and of course the story is priceless. And how was the horse sausage? I wouldn't eat it again, at least not with all the other excellent and tasty choices in the Viktualienmarkt, but it wasn't bad. The sausage was soft and light-colored, similar to weisswurst in look and texture. But anyway--whether or not you visit the horse butcher, do not miss the Viktualienmarkt. Cheap, quick lunches abound, and you cannot beat the atmosphere. read more

Munichers, you are lucky people! This market is hands down awesome in every way. Housed in semi permanent stalls and open 6 days a week, Victualienmarkt is full of fresh delicious things: bread, pretzels, meat, fish, sausages, veggies,fruit, wine, cheese, and so much more. There are places to get a fruit smoothie, places that sell tea, coffee and chocolates and even crafts. When I visited, a few stalls had traditional Christmas decorations made from whole spices that smelled heavenly but would not have survived the trip home, sadly. It's a wonderful spot to browse, wander and work up an appetite. In the center there is a small beer garden where you can picnic, or multiple little cafes to grab a meal. read more

It took us a couple of days to realize where this market was but it has an amazing selection of common goods and secret finds. We unfortunately spent way over budget at Herrmann Geschenke on beer steins, COO COO clocks and 3 tiered pyramid's. A little extra busy due to the Seahawk fans at Augenstiner and the NFL in town. Viktualienmarket was the perfect place to walk around, eat, drink, and people watch. I found it to be friendly for tourists and locals. The location is central near many train stations, main streets, and pretty walkable if you're staying in the central/historic district. There were many stalls filled with food, beer, and trinkets (baskets, German Christmas pyramids, etc.). The food we had at many of their booths (and I say many because we had lunch here every day) was delicious. The best part is getting a beer and walking the market, people watching and enjoying the fresh air. In Germany beer is taxed as food and therefore any place where you can eat, you can drink. So buy a beer and walk around! Also, everyone we encountered was amicable and spoke English​! Thank goodness because​ I was surely butchering the few German words I knew. It was very nice to be surrounded​ by different languages! If you speak Spanish, Italian, French, English, and Russian, I found that most people knew one, if not multiple languages​, and you will be perfectly fine communicating. As a tip- in Germany,​ almost all shops are closed on Sunday so keep it in mind if you plan on visiting. While we found a few food vendors open, it was constrained​. read more

If you are ever in Munich, this is a must. If you live in Munich, then you already know about this place. I was here for a conference and had a few hours to kill during the day so I decided to take an Uber over here and see what good stuff I could find. What a gem! The local merchants of produce, wine, cheese, and other great items kept me fascinated and made it such a wonderful place to peruse and shop. And the many tables set up with people drinking great coffee or beer and enjoying their time with each other created such an energetic vibe, it was so easy to into. I ended up buying some cheese to bring back to the hotel with me and nibble on, and a few souvenirs to bring back to the US. All of the merchants were incredibly friendly and spoke english, so it was easy to business with. It was also close to their busy Marienplatz so you can make a full day of the walking, shopping, and eating. Loved it! read more

Very cool market with a nice assortment of stalls. Heavy on the meat and cheese. Wow, Germans seem to really like their meat and dairy! I got yelled at by a lady for taking a picture of one of the stalls so you might want to size the vendor up before you snap a picture. Now before everyone hates on me for giving it only three stars, it's nice but there didn't seem to be that much variety. It seems like every time I turned a corner, I saw another stall selling the same stuff as the prior one. Now I know that maybe one butcher uses better meat than another one but there was a lot of redundancy. For my money, Borough Market in London and the Boqueria in Barcelona are a but more interesting just because there is a more diverse product mix. I would definitely recommend visiting this place and buying some food if you wish...just ask before you take a picture. read more

Viktualienmarkt was at the top of my list of places to go while in Munich. My sister and I decided to do a hop-on, hop-off bus and we were very happy to find out that it stopped in Marienplatz which is just a couple minute walk from Viktualienmarkt. I am not too proud to say that I first found out about Viktualienmarkt from watching Rick Steve's show and really wanted a beer and pretzel here. We were lucky enough to arrive in early afternoon before it rained too much. We were able to walk around the various booths, looking at food products, locally made decorations, flowers, gelato and much much more. It was a great way to spend a couple hours surrounded by both locals and tourists. There is an ATM in the center of the market and there are also restrooms so you don't have to go find a hotel or something. Definitely try a gelato, I had a dairy-free cherry gelato and I can say it was one of the most amazing things I had in Europe. How it was dairy-free, I have no clue! I would easily return here if I were back in the area. read more

When in Munich, you must visit the Viktualiemarket. It is centrally located just beyond Marienplatz. There are so many food vendors to choose from for a meal or snack and a lovely little biergarten in the middle. You can order your food from the restaurant attached to the Biergarten, or bring your food from one of the other stands. There are a lot of merchants offering fresh produce, flowers, meats, cheeses, handmade goods and much more. It's a lovely place to get unique items and support local business. It was raining off and on the afternoon we were there, so it wasn't terribly busy. The only downfall was the pigeons hanging around trying to steal food from people's plates! read more

Absolutely loved it! What a great place right in the middle of Munich. I would go to this area everyday if I lived close by. I'm sure it attracts a lot of tourists being so close to Marienplatz, (I mean, how else would I have got here) but who cares! The flowers, of the flowers! I don't usually buy flowers just cause, but while walking around and seeing all the beautiful options it is very tempting. Our visit in early May provided a ton of fruit, veggies, cheese and fresh meats to choose from. If you don't want to take your food home and cook, there is no shortage of prepared options available. The soup kitchen, fresh olives, fish and various sausage and other traditional German fare leaves plenty of choices. There is also plenty of crafty decor and gift items being hand made right at the booths. I wish we would have planned more than one day to visit so I could buy more stuff! read more

Not only is it a place to find extraordinary products from artisan suppliers, it also is the height of walk up shopping and eating indulgences. We spotted this place on our first day in Munich, and thought it would be a good place to find a quick bite, and it was less than a block away from our hotel. Even though it was snowing at the time of our visit, this place was pretty lively. It was the mid afternoon, and many people were out for their late lunches. This should have been the first place we visited when in Munich. It's a large open area, with small, permanent buildings set throughout this area. Here you'll find vendors selling meat and produce, delis, small beer gardens, and vendors selling various hot foods such as roast meats and sausages. My coworker and I were in the mood for some brats before leaving from Germany. Huge outdoor markets like this are my happy place. I can spend hours oh my godding over everything and running around in circles. My husband not so much. We were only in Munich for a weekend, and knowing that the market is closed on Sundays I insisted rushing over on Saturday afternoon. I had no plan of attack, only a curiosity and a hungry belly. Stall after stall gushed with gorgeous produce, interesting objects and oddities, and just delicious looking everything. Among the random stops I made were a potpourri stand, a fruit stand, a health market stand selling natural products like bee pollen, a stand selling marmalades and liquors (I am now the proud owner of a pine liquor) and the spice and chocolates stand selling the juiciest chocolate covered mangos. Viktualienmarkt is an everyman or woman's farmer's market. All of the prices were much lower than I expected, and the people watching was aces. Such a sumptuous slice of Munich! read more

A true Munich gem, one of the best markets I have ever experienced. Even on a Monday, it was teeming with life all day. I was pleased to pick up some cheap fruits to eat right there, and other options include savory food (stands and restaurants), desserts, coffee, knick-knacks, steins, and the best of all, the beer garden with plentiful outdoor seating. The taps are manned by a different local brewery each day, so you are sure to find something you can enjoy. At the center is the traditional blue and white Bavarian maypole. If you can manage to steal it, you can ransom it for beer, but good luck! read more

Great assortment of shops and stalls in the heart of Munich. They have all sorts of produce, meats, cheeses, and there are heaps of restaurants and a beer garden to boot. All in all, a very pleasant spot to walk around for the afternoon. If you're coming from the US and are used to eating typical supermarket quality stuff, get ready for a taste explosion. Man, the stuff here tastes amazing. The hearty wheat breads, the funky, aged cheeses, the seemingly unlimited assortment of handmade sausages, and real butter. The quality of the goods here is phenomenal. But its also pricey, so bring stacks of Euros. We spent a lot of time here just walking around, trying new things, soaking in the vibe, and chatting with friendly locals over beers and bratwurst. You will be awing and ewing over all the lovely gourmet foods to good bio fruits. Their are even provayers of meats who sell everything from wild game to weisswurst sausage -- the velvety, soft sausage I could eat on a daily bases. I was in paradise sightseeing, shopping and eating here. I dined on lovely olives with feta cheese, fabulous fruits and sampled the best German cheese. Viktualienmarkt is well-known for the statues of the ladies of the market -- the famous ladies known for being guardians of the market. These women have long passed away, but their likeness, spirit and good intentions live on at the market. They are ever present by the statues that honor each women throughout the market square. You can feel them looking after the market even today. You can't help but to reflect on the care these ladies gave to their market. That care and appreciation for quality food extends throughout Germany today, as by all the bio foods available throughout the market and German shops. Bio foods, also known as "Organic" were first embraced by Germany back in the early-90's and have long been popular. Go Germany for embracing organic foods before everyone else. Gorgeous! Plus - great people watching! Viktualienmarkt is always my first stop in Munich. I love that you can leave the bustle of the main square, and enter a different kind of bustling market. There are people everywhere, but it's a mix of locals and tourists and everyone is eating and drinking and making friends. The stalls are beautifully set up - fruit, flowers, vegetables, herbs - everything is gorgeous (great photo op!). I speak almost no German, but all of the vendors (including at the little restaurants) are very helpful and will direct you and find whatever you are looking for. I love all of the areas to buy food - there are cheese vendors, meats, flower arrangements, crafts. It's a shoppers paradise! I usually eat lunch there (weisswurst (spell?) and beer) and sit and enjoy the atmosphere. I've managed to pick unique gifts there as well. The photos I've taken have also turned out so well, I've received requests to have them framed as gifts. Definitely a must-see in Munich - visitors and locals alike! read more

If you want some local special ingredients, Viktualienmarkt will be the best place for it. Here you can find many various traditional or modern style ingredients. It got more than 100 stalls and shops inside. And it also offer flowers, cheese, honey and so on, it is also great place to find some souvenirs. Usually, the stalls and shops opened around 8 o'clock at the morning. It also got a Biergarten inside, it great place to pick up a nice Bavarian beer and relaxing at the weekend. I like this place, very cultural. It is not only about the products it offers, also people who are here or visit this place, come from difficult places around the world. I always find something special and interesting here. The Maypole is also something special you can find in the market. Because of its location, there are lot of nice restaurants around this place. The apartment I rented for my week in Munich is just a block south of the Viktualienmarkt, so I walk through at least twice a day. The variety of stalls is impressive - spices, jams, meat and fish, cheese, coffee, craft items, flowers, etc. There are also several food stalls offering a variety of traditional Bavarian food. The city keeps the chains out of here, and keeps the rent low so many of Munich's old vendors can afford space. If you're hungry, I particularly recommend Schlemmermeyer, which is located towards the center on the north side of the market. So far I've had a bratwurst and a leberkase sandwich, and both were good and under €3 each. Can't beat that, especially when the brat comes with two wurst on the bun! Note that it closes early, but you can score some good deals on the fresh items if you show up late in the afternoon. read more

It's a farmer's market done right; there were many stalls selling different things, from ready-to-eat foods to raw veggies and fruits. Fresh salami and swiss panini sandwiches... avocado, basil, lime and orange juice smoothies... about a trillion kinds of honey and locally made crafts... yeah, this market rocks. The panini sandwiches are available at a stall near the traffic light at Frauenstraße, and Müller's juice stand is down the same aisle going towards the center of the market. After that you've got a sea of craft and jam stalls, and the Honighäus'l with its honey wine and plethora of flavored honeys. And that's just scratching the surface! The oldest open are market in Munich. Fresh and beautiful fruits, vegetables, and meats. Incredible selections of cheeses, wines, and other unique offerings. Check out the biodynamic food stand and learn about lunar farming. Things here are definitely a bit more pricey but the quality is excellent and you can get a wonderful selection. Take a stop by the Biergarten and enjoy a delicious bier from one of the six breweries in Munich (the massive keg is provided by each brewery in rotation) along with some of the snacks/treats you just got! Also 100% worth reading before, after, or during your adventure through the market, the history of Viktualienmarkt is fascinating and knowing it will make your experiences there even more special. read more
