I cant tell you how much i miss buying stuff from this market. Everything was organic and food was freshly made. Water from fountains were drinkable on the spot! But most importantly, the fruits!!!! I walked up to a counter, pointed at a raw, fishy mixture, watched it get shoved into a fresh roll and squirted with a pinkish/white sauce, and finally, tucked snugly between a few pieces of lettuce. On a sunny day this is the place to be in Munich. The Viktualienmarkt is a farmer's market and despite its location in the heart of a tourist area you will often find many locals here shopping or making the most of the weather and sitting in the beer garden. There are a variety of stalls and if you're here around lunchtime you should pick up some food and head to the beer garden to enjoy it with a German beer. We came to eat here twice and enjoyed it both times. read more

This is truly a lovely gem in Munich. We passed through here on a chilly, but beautifully sunny March day. Sadly, it was just too chilly for my bones to sit outside and drink beer, but we did warm ourselves with the soup kitchen. (Review on THAT spot forthcoming.) A nice stop in Munich's City Center for a snack, a meal, some shopping or just a nice walk. This market is easily reached by nearby metro stops and contains fresh and prepared food, produce, sweet treats, locally made products and souvenirs. I found myself here a few times in the three days I spent in Munich and enjoyed looking around the outdoor market. Seating is available in the beer garden, and there are tables for standing while eating. Chairs/Benches are available as well. It's a great place for people watching. I was tempted to try my first (of many) Bavarian pretzel and freshly cooked sausages. That pretzel was so good, it's as if I hadn't a real pretzel until this. Crisp on the outside and chewy on the inside. That dough had some great flavor and tasted really fresh. I purchased it at one of the bakeries found in the market. As for the sausages, I joined the long line for this small kiosk that served freshly grilled sausages. If there is a line, it must be good, yes? Yes, it was! It was juicy, well seasoned and relatively inexpensive. There are plenty of places serving the same thing but when it doubt look for the places with a line. This market is a nice place to relax and just soak in the scene. The butcher shops on the outside edge of the market are worth a look for their nice displays. read more

I really wanted to love this place (because nothing makes me happier than walking around a food market), but I kept comparing it to the top food markets that I have been to: 1) Barcelona's Mercat de La Boqueria 2) Vienna's Naschmarkt 3) NYC's Chelsea Market Viktualienmarkt seemed too spread out and didn't give me that "I need to shop and squeeze every piece of produce" feeling. read more

I love exploring open air markets when we're travelling, but to be honest, one of the best in Europe is located right in our backyard. The Viktualienmarkt is an amazing square just south of the famous Marienplatz. You can find everything here that a foodie needs for a good time, from over a dozen high quality butchers, stands and stands of fruit and vegetable purveyors, specialty shops for cheese, wine, butter, etc. But the real treat is finding the little takeaway or eatery stands snuggled in between the stalls. I come here a lot for lunches and there's almost always something new to find. My favorite is the soup kitchen, but the little panini stand and the Lebanese takeaway are also amazing. There's just too much good stuff and so little time! Highly recommended for home chefs or gourmands, whether travelling through or if you call Munich home. Oh yeah, and of course they have one of the best biergartens in the city. Sigh. read more

This is probably my favourite place in Munich. I love eating here, going for a stroll, shopping for fresh food, beer, or wine, and meeting friends. You name it. The produce: It is the best farmer's market I know, it has incredible produce (both organic and "normal"), fresh and excellent quality vegetables, herbs, flowers etc. Beautifully presented in a historic, gorgeous setting. The meats are worth a separate mention alone. And you can get a cheap but delicious snack or drink. The people: You get it all here, and in a venue where it is easy to mix and mingle, meet or just watch. Locals, suburban shoppers, tourists, groups, sitting or standing together, wandering around, having a look-see. Even in biting winter cold, a must-see. read more

I live in an agricultural area of California, so we have farmers markets open from spring to fall. This open air market is nothing like them. This is the most awesome, glorious, beautiful "farmers market" I have ever seen. There are all types of local fare, baked goods, cured meat/sausage, pickled vegetables, and great beer. The olives in the picture from Lisa L. are absolutely wonderful. The people are great. My wife and I were sitting on a bench enjoying our haul, and an elderly gentleman came over to make sure we were enjoying the market. He didn't work for the Vikualiemarkt, he was just a Munichener that was proud of his market, totally great! read more

Viktaualienmarkt is exactly what every town needs. In America it would be similar to a farmers market, or smaller version of naschmarkt in Vienna. There are a few quick meal options, flowers, ice cream, specialities, and of course a bier garten. It is very inviting and well kept up. This is a great place to take in local culture and interact with local merchants. You could spend anywhere between 5 minutes to a few hours depending on your mood. read more

A touristy market (think Ferry Building in SF), which even has a beergarden in the middle of it. If you're lucky, there will be an oompah band playing in the beergarden. But even on normal days, you can get all your groceries done here. So it's cool that people who do live around here do their shopping here and it's not a complete tourist trap. The meat stores on the side will vacuum pack for tourists wanting to take a piece of Munich weisswurst home - if you dare run those past the customs gauntlet give it a try! read more

This is a fantastic beer garden to sit in the shade an relax. They have waiter service at certain tables if you want something more formal. Or you can go get a sausage or some bread and cheese and bring it to a bench. Naturally they have a selection of 1L beers. Surrounding the garden are lovely produce, olive, and flower stands as well. The market is very near the Marienplatz and is a great, inexpensive stop for lunch. Definitely worth a stroll even if you're not hungry. read more

This is an awesome market place. You can find venders with just about everything you are looking for. My girlfriend and I went to different vendors picking out food and then went to the park near by and had picnic. The food is so good from here. Especially the cheese shop. Awesome outdoor market with plenty of food and beer for all! If I was staying in the area for a longer period, I would want to grocery shop for fresh produce here all the time. Spargelfest was just finishing up so many vendors still had prominent displays of their white asparagus. This is a perfect place to get a good deal for lunch and peruse the market stalls. read more
