Viking Planet is a privately owned museum boasting a virtual reality viking experience, and it was by far the best "museum" we visited in Oslo. It was also the only way to get a view, albeit digital, of the famous Gokstad and Oseberg viking ships as the Viking Ship museum is closed until 2026. We spent 3.5 hours inside and barely noticed, the interactive displays are quite engaging, and the touchscreens and graphics are excellent quality.
By far the most interesting part was the Viking Timeline, which gave information I hadn't heard anywhere else despite reading several historical books. There's a VR game to play where you are a viking fighting for survival (mostly shooting with bow & arrow) that costs extra, but it's fun, worth it for a 20 minute game. The VR "Viking Experience" developed in conjunction with Ridley Scott was OK, 4D seats, great visuals and VR quality although the story itself is rather underwhelming. Good thing it's included in admission price.
There's also a good gift shop where you can buy real moose hide or reindeer hide, good quality souvenirs, and jewellery based on actual viking artifacts. If you have an Oslo pass, admission price is 15% off.
