In 2022, Oslo merged the former National Gallery, the National Museum of Architecture, and other museums. It opened its new main building in 2022 and houses Norway's largest collection of art, architecture, and design. This new museum is well worth visiting because of it's extensive collection. In fact, you will need to focus on just parts of this museum for your initial visit.
One room you may want to visit is the Edvard Munch room on the 4th floor, which includes the 1893 version of The Scream as well as 17 other important works by Munch.
Although there is an extensive art collection, there are other media including sculpture, textiles, large parts of Queen Maud and Queen Sonja's royal costume collection, and modern art. In fact, you can find art and historical objects from early Norwegian times through the modern day. These are all part of the permanent collection. In addition, temporary exhibits change on a regular basis.
Like any large museum, the National Museum can be overwhelming. Take a look at the website or the brochure when you get there, and select a few exhibits that catch your eye. In that way, you can see what interests you before museum burnout occurs. read more
