A little out of the way, hard to find (without asking locals), but worth a visit . . .
Tucked upstairs in the Viking Curling Club, overlooking the rinks, is family-run Viking Chinese Restaurant. Don't let the no signage (except the one taped to the door - in photo) and old school, 1980s-furnished rink lounge repurposed change your mind. The charm is still there. This place makes you smile.
Sunday buffet dinner ($13.50): choice of at least 8 hot dishes and brown rice; iceberg lettuce salad with your choice of grocery store brand salad dressings in the bottle; plated slices of cream pie; and fortune cookies. Not the biggest or best I've been to, but hot, freshly put out and watched over by Mom, with Dad cooking it up in the kitchen. Nice family, with the two teenage girls serving and bussing.
Highlights: The chicken balls were confirmed homemade medium sized, with a thin layer of batter, just like they are supposed to be - fresh and meaty, not overly battered. Nice to see brown rice over white. The deep fried won tons were small, a dime of meat, but the won ton had a nice dry fry flavour, flakey yet crispy, not greasy. There were these mini-dumplings, well filled with beef, like a mini meat-and-potatoes rush in the mouth, delicious. The ginger beef was OK, crispy and flavorful; the beef and broccoli was more broccoli, though nicely steamed.
This place was almost full with locals when we were there. The rumour is that this is the best Chinese food in the area. I see there is a menu to choose from at non-buffet times. If this was my town, I'd be back again. read more
