However, it was worth the detour, as it feels wonderfully unpretentious and has some nicely done classic French dishes. Everything was priced reasonably, and all the main dishes include the choice of either a soup or salad, plus coffee or tea/herbal tea at the end of the meal. The food and service was great, and it's clear that it's a neighbourhood favourite, as most of the tables were full when we came for our reservation. They have several of them in this place and I have found one of my favourite in Quebec: The Tribale IPA. It has a nice bracing bitterness, a well balanced hoppy flavor, strong but not overpowering, not malty, and with a nice subtle grapefruit taste that is what I usually look in an IPA. They also sell it in a can in their store, so I bought 4 cans and that same night had it taste to another IPA hunter and was very happy with the new discovery.

For me Ma Brasserie is really off the beaten path, but I'm willing to take the road trip as parking around is hugely easy and available. The brewery offers brewing classes in cooperation with Institut Brassicole du Quebec that I may try as something new to learn in 2019!

Then, I went back again during my recent 24-hour stopover in Montreal. I guess it's fair to say I really like this place - definitely a solid 4.5 stars! Unlike other breweries that focus more on strong IPAs or use some very unique and creative ingredients, Isle de Garde's beers are more down-to-earth. They emphasize on simplicity, and yet they're amazing in what they do! Grisette is my personal favorite - super crisp and refreshing with hints of citrusy. I also tried a few other "simplistic beers" (lager, kolsch, pilsner, etc) and they're very impressive too! Just for fun, I tried their stout for a change - it's low on alcohol content (under 4%) but it's EXTREMELY creamy. What a pleasant surprise to finish my beer tasting experience! Their food offering is definitely NOT the typical "pub food", and overall quality is excellent! I tried a few dishes during my two visits - beef tartar, grilled octopus, veal tongue, etc. The reason for deducting one star is due to a minor inconsistency in their food quality (i.e. first visit was awesome, and second visit was great). Nerveless, my second visit was on Dec 27, so I believe the minor quality degradation was just a one-off situation as staff level was probably lower everywhere. They have a HUGE patio along the street which makes them an awesome place to hang out on a sunny summer day! The staff also told me they have resumed producing beer in cans in late 2022, so as you'd imagine, I've stocked up (especially their Grisette) before heading back to my home town. Since then I've returned to Au Petit Extra every time I've visited Montreal, a city I love. This past September I had dinner at Au Petit Extra twice with a friend, and both times the food and service were superb. As immodest as it may sound, I think I have a fairly sophisticated palate, having enjoyed wonderful meals with friends at many of New York's best French restaurants which have earned 2 or 3 Michelin stars and 3 or 4 stars in the New York Times. I have found the food at Au Petit Extra to be truly delicious and creative. I should also mention that compared to fine dining in NYC, Au Petit Extra is reasonably priced. I highly recommend this simply decorated restaurant for its highly memorable food!

They have all the standard breakfast fare, and some interesting special dishes too. I tried the special French toast sandwich, with egg, ham and cheese sandwiched between two slices of French toast topped with fruit with maple syrup on the side. The perfect sweet and salty combo. D had the breakfast poutine, a HUGE portion, very rich and delicious. We could have shared it and been quite satisfied. What's really fun is that the vibe is casual yet refined, unlike a lot of breakfast places that veer more towards casual diner. They were playing great music, a good mix of late 90s/early00s like Franz Ferdinand, Moby and BV3000. The service was great, but it was easy as we were the only customers on a Tuesday morning. I could see this being a great place to dine on a sunny weekend morning, with the windows wide open for people watching. I will definitely be back, and I hope other people start going too, because this is a great place to have in the neighborhood, a stone's throw from Lafontaine Park and right on the Rachel bike path.
