This place is pricy. Well I came here to browse. I don't play as much video games as I used to. This is a very interesting store. Its definitely an eye opener for me to see how a very retro game can sell for thousands of dollar. Some game on the shelf, I have never seen or heard of. That is pretty cool. People who work there are super nice and helpful. Walked in for a seemingly difficult find, no other place in Calgary had New Super Mario bros. for DS, and upon calling them the customer service rep was immediate in their answer that they had it in stock! Was so excited that when I got there, I didn't ask for any help looking for it,- only for one of them to point out they had already put it on hold for me without asking. Walked out with a Gameboy SP Advanced and a Kirby game in addition. Super great team, they are taking good care of the place and seem to enjoy working/owning(?) the store as they had many fun items in addition to video games. (Pokemon cards, signed Sailor Moon copy, DND die, and more)! Totally recommend for any specific nerdy needs. 10/10 read more

They are super passionate and really friendly people that go above and beyond the typical usual. Their reputation will carry them for years to come and you'll find everything you'll want for your kids or adult fanatic friends or family! This is my favourite store in Calgary. Jeff and his staff are knowledgeable and friendly. I'm into video games but my real passion is collecting movies. 5 used Blurays for $20 is a fantastic deal. They have so much to choose from. Plus they bring in some new titles too. Just recently bought "The Thing" on 4K and the Criterion bluray of "Ghost Dog" and the prices were very competitive. The store itself is organized and just looks cool. Lots of fun posters and memorabilia. Seriously if you are into movies and games shopping here is a must! read more

I love this store and I go there all the time. Their prices used to be really high and not competatively priced, but that has changed. They try to be very on the ball about the current market online so you get a fair price. However, you will most likely be paying more than EB Games or Ebay as they are a small business with overhead. I have no problem paying the extra percentage because the people are great, they have no problem holding things for you (including new releases) and will try to track down anything you are looking for. Not having to deal with the jerks at EB games berating you for not pre-ordering is seriously the best thing ever too. They're also the best place to do trade-ins in the city, giving you far more than pawn shops or EB/Futureshop will. However, if you want high-end auction prices, you're going to have to list it online and do the legwork yourself. I've seen a number of people come in thinking they can get 100 bucks for their NES, which is just not realistic at all. They also have a large selection of DVDs and Blurays, many of them very competatively priced. They also have a program where you pay $5 a year and every game you buy earns you a stamp and with 5 stamps you get a free dvd or bluray. I've gotten many, many movies with this. This is one of those kind of spots that make it good to be a nerd. If this place could somehow breed with The Sentry Box, I'm pretty sure the offspring would corner the market on nerdy goodness in Calgary for decades to come. This is the ultimate video game store, selection-wise. It has games not just from the current generation of systems, or even the one before... but basically going back to the beginning of the video game evolutionary ladder (except for maybe Atari and the previous ones. I don't recall seeing anything for them, but I could be wrong.) The prices are a bit steep, and the staff can range from super friendly and helpful to a bit "holier than thou" about their gaming knowledge. I wouldn't recommend going here to do game trade-ins, as they seem to kind of low-ball you, but if you're looking for a hard to find or out of date game, this is probably pretty much your only option.... and if you're just a gaming nerd and want to get a blast from the past, it's worth coming by just to look around. 24/30 read more

Went in for my first visit the other day and I walked out happy as hell. Found three games that I've been looking for forever and have been reticent to buy online due to condition concerns--at least here, I can have a decent look at what I'm getting. First off, the staff were incredibly friendly--especially the owner, who was incredibly helpful and nice. My friend and I spent like a good hour in here because I'd never been before and was incredibly indecisive--I had to scour the place wisely because I promised myself to spend within a budget. Some of the games I wanted were a steal, and others were pretty darn steep. I found a good balance and walked out with some gems, and also joined their loyalty card program because I am sure as hell coming back. I spent three days scouring the city for a discontinued game that one of Colin's Nephew's was dying to have. Not one place had seen this game in months or more. When I called here they had the game and they were willing to set it aside for 24 hours or more if I needed it less than a week before Xmas. Most stores won't even hold an item for an hour because someone else might buy it. They were very friendly and accommodating when I went in to pick it up. She told me to feel free and call if I am looking for another hard to get game so they can try and find it. They sell new and used games for pretty much every platform out there. Although the wii selection was sparse. They also rent games and movies. I noticed some movies for sale as well. I believe this is a good place to look for some of the harder to find games. I would call first to see if they have it and if they don't they will try to find it for you. While I am still an EB games girl for most of my gaming needs I will be checking here now and then for special orders. If you live to game even half as much as I do then stopping by for a look here is worth while. Provided you can turn off your game long enough to go;) read more

While a quick trip in Calgary, I was looking for some games, I have got to say the look of the place from the outside is not that great, but once you take the first foot in there are gréât games tombe bought. Video Game Trader, Calgary, is a wonderful little game store. They have everything from Atari 2600, to Xbox 360. The minute you walk in, it's like you get slapped in the face by a blast from the past. The Good: Wide, WIDE selection of games, game consoles, DVD's and Blue Rays (movies), super friendly staff that not only make you feel welcome, but also share your addiction to video games, and exceptional quality disc repair services. The Not So Good: Some of the prices can be a bit expensive, to the point that you can hear your wallet skip a beat. Experience: I started off as a customer, and eventually got a shot at working at VGT. Naturally, the first thing I noticed was the game systems I grew up with, as well as ones I never saw before (Atari, Sega Saturn, 3DO, etc.), as well as the many games that accompanied them. Karen, one of the owners, was nothing short of friendly, and always made you feel welcome in her store. Granted, most of the time I was browsing, and/or buying games that interested only myself (PS2/3, PSP, Xbox 360, DS, etc.), and rarely did I ever try to buy some of the bigger ticket items like Earthbound (which has an exceptionally LONG waiting list @__@), or the original NES with box and original accesories. Blah Blah Blah: You basically have to shop around within the store itself. The wide majority of the games, more notably the PS2's, Gamecube games, and some of the N64 cartridges are reasonably priced. Then you see some of their other things (like their factory sealed Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, digitally remastered collectors edition for example) that have a price on it that would make more sense on a factory sealed FF7 case, although from what I've heard, they have changed their pricing system to more favorable ones so that your wallet won't go into cardiac arrest as much. Summary: If you're a nerd, pining for the good old days, where everything was 8Bit or oddly shaped polygons, but want to shop at a store where the people are loveable nerds like you, and not Gamestop/EB Games employees that go "We love games too, for that is why we work here, see us smile BEEP BOOP", then Video Game Trader is definitely a store you need to visit if you're in the Calgary area. Even if you don't buy anything at the start, the upbeat staff, and their large library of games and movies will keep you coming back, just in case you somehow missed that one game you've been searching for when you were a kid. read more

I used to be a loyal patron to this fine establishment. That is until one day a few years ago, when I arrived early to a flea market and witnessed the owner of the store, whom I recognized immediately, buying up all the reasonably-priced retro games before regular people could get to them, undoubtedly to resell at a massive markup later and seal their position as the only place you can go to find most games. From that day on they lost my business. I will not support a company that participates in such scumbag business practices, even if it means my collection remains small. read more

I went in to look for pokemon emerald, there were three employees working and not a single person acknowledged me. The girl behind the game case was very unprofessional, especially when answering the phone. As for the overall prices in the store, everything is overpriced. I can understand some of the more rare items, but charging $50 for a game that you can buy brand new from futureshop for $20 is ridiculous. They had a copy of pokemon emerald in original box for $200 and $90 for just the cartridge. On eBay it was less then half of that for either. Even locally the prices were better. Even at the local convention this year the other vendor prices were much better. I will never purchase games from video game trader unless I have no other choice, but the chances of that happening are slim to none. read more

Good selection of older and hard to find games. Not worth your time with new games. Seem limited and over priced. Place looks worn down and dirty. Not to mention they can't even take the time to get rid of a TVs not working.... If it did not look like a worn down pawn shop I would not care to pay the extra cost of a new game. Sadly not much better in calgary. Will stick with EB/GameStop just because the take the time to make it look good! No reason to return here after one visit. I love this store. I've read other reviews that complain about pricing; in regards to what they charge and also what they pay for used stuff, comparing to pawn shops. This is not a pawn shop, it is a video game mecha, and their selection is amazing. Would I like to pay a couple bucks less for these games? Yes, but you know what I'd like even more? To walk in and them actually have awesome games. The answer to the question, "do you guys have ________?" is almost always yes, and that's worth a slight premium to me. The staff is super friendly and the owner really knows her stuff and isn't afraid to tell you what she thinks of any game, which I love. Honest to god, what the f*** is up with this place? I mean, I can understand the pricing on some of their rare videogames (esp. for the older/classic consoles), but the prices on their DVDs?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!! Look, they're selling used DVDs for almost $30 that you can get - NEW - at WalMart in the $5 bin. And that's not even an exaggeration. I saw 3 specific examples of that. I also found a couple of titles I recently purchased (again new) for $3.99 at a Safeway bin - they were charging $15 a piece for them... USED! And these are just a pair of simple examples. They're selling used DVD box-sets for the same price you can buy them at Future Shop or Best Buy. Hell if you want to save some $$, go to Cash Converters and buy them for about 1/2 of what this crazy shop is asking for them. It's as if they have *NO* clue what things are worth, so they just price them blindly based on what they IMAGINE that they're worth. The staff are quite friendly (at least the young lady who runs the joint) and they will pay a fair price for any used games you bring-in, so that's a huge plus. Just avoid the DVD section! read more

This place is an excellent location to shop for games for but the prices are quite brutal. They are asking ridiculous amounts like $45 for Donkey Kong 64, a game which can easily be found on eBay for $15 - $20. The staff are super nice and super friendly though, and are always willing to help. Great store to check out, I've gotten a couple good deals here but that's about it.
