There was a decent amount of outdoor walking required to go through the exhibits. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, I just recommend either bringing a drink or visiting when the weather is cooler. During the walk we encountered a friendly dragonfly, which made it worth it. The village seemed to be understaffed, because only half of the buildings had guides to show us around. For the deserted buildings, we had to guess what things did what. The place we assumed to be the woodcarvers shop looked like there would normally be a staff person there, but their station was empty. this concerned me because we had smaller children in our party, and some of the sharp carving tools were left on the tables. Other than that, staff that were present gave wonderful demonstrations of the profession they represented. Most notably, the weaver and the blacksmith. The weaver walked us through the whole process from the cleaning of cotton to sewing the final fabrics together into clothing. The blacksmith worked in a functional smithery and showed us how they created a metal hook using actual fire and metal tools.

Great place to go back in time. So much fun to explore. The people that work here make the…read moreexperience. It's easy to tell they love to teach and care about this place. You get to go back in time to see how the blacksmith and woodworker functioned, tour the old buildings and learn their stories. It's just a great time.

Parking is non issue. Theres a cute park along the way, artwork... even zip lining. I loved watching the kayaks in the water. If you're in town and want to get some fresh air-- stop by the Chattahoochee Riverwalk!

A lot about livin' and a little 'bout love." Alan Jackson I remember when Alan released this song in '93 and (having never visited the South to that point) I wondered if he invented some magical river called the "Chattahoochee" because it made for such a catchy guide vocal. Now that we've seen some of what Alan was singing about while on the "Chattahoochee River Walk" in Columbus, Georgia, it makes me wonder if the lyrics to his song could actually be semi-autobiographical. ‍ This trail runs parallel to the river and offers a consistent connection to it during your adventure. Walkers, runners, cyclists, and leashed dogs are all welcome here and from a safety standpoint I'd assign it a perfect score during daylight hours. Those with mobility challenges should not be dissuaded from enjoying it because it is well maintained, mostly flat, and easily accommodates wheelchairs, baby strollers, etc. While I typically elect to run most of the trails that we review, I quite enjoyed causally meandering along this one. And that's...Henry's Take. #chattahoochee #alanjackson #columbustrails

It was…read moreemotional beyond any other event EVER as friends, family and neighbors came to say goodbye drenched in tears. We barely had time to celebrate his high school graduation when he was being picked up by his recruiters and whisked off to a new life. There is nothing like seeing you child leave on a new adventure filled with both excitement and uncertain danger. My heart still beats out of my chest whenever caller ID shows an incoming call from his home base area code. I wanted him to choose a safe Army career as far from conflict as possible. One that might keep him out of direct combat. As we argued back and forth @ MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station), he held his ground and chose Infantry Airborne. Well, sometime during bootcamp he got introduced to the idea of becoming a Ranger and for the next few months, he went all out to fulfill this goal... and he reached it. He became a United States Army Ranger last Fall. Fast forward to today, where he has now completed all the requirements of becoming a Ranger including one of the most important... Ranger Leadership School. 13 plus grueling weeks of combat training in the worst of conditions where you are expected to maintain mental focus even when physically exhausted. Hurley Hill stadium was filled with proud parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, offsprings and loved ones as 177 Soldiers earned their Ranger qualified badge today. "I'm the" ... brother, dad, mom, wife, daughter and son of a Ranger shirts were everywhere and the pride for our country was incredible as Hall of Fame veteran Rangers stood to be honored during the ceremony. To my surprise, ALL of the armed forces divisions can take this leadership training, including Navy, Airforce and Marines, as well as NATO allies from other countries. We saw soldiers from Finland and the Middle East here as well. All in all, I have enjoyed the many visited we've had to Fort Benning over these last two years of watching our son fulfill his dream. I have not been to very many Military Installations, but Benning is far more that I ever expected a Military Base to be. I thought it would be small and filled with tanks, bunkers and marching soldiers like in the movie Stripes. Although you will see that in various places, largely it just seems like a normal small town with grocery stores, malls, homes, gas stations, barber shops and restaurants just like any other town. Well, just like any other town that has heavily armed checkpoints... lol Posting pictures of Military Bases is discouraged, so I have very few pics to share. However, I did want to show the absolutely beautiful bridge that was just recently completed as you approach the first checkpoint off I-185: http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/fort-benning-fort-benning?select=nXdA0X12KA1JBumNkVgxsg#EVk1-Jy2YcgVD-qaU3PLyw Fort Benning receives 5 stars for being a top facility in producing world class soldiers... one of which I am extremely proud of!
