I have been to Victory Cigars twice. The first time I dealt with the owner and he was quite helpful with explaining everything as I was looking to purchase my first humidor after a return trip from Cuba. The only bad part of that initial purchase experience was that he upsold me on a Boveda calibration pack for my Brigham hygrometer (I have since been to Brigham and was told that their hygrometers are factory calibrated so this was an unnecessary purchase). When I purchased the humidor, the owner told me to e-mail them if I had an questions. Sure enough I did have some issues within a month after. When I was smoking some cigars, the odd time the wrapper would break (once it exploded/popped because of the pressure). I e-mailed them asking what could be causing the problem. Their initial suggestion was fair in checking the humidity level in my humidor and the calibration of the hygrometer. When I replied that this was not the issue, I got no additional reply. I have since looked online and after quite a bit of research, have figured out the problem. It is kind of sad that a cigar specialist could not answer this. In all fairness, it took me a while to find the answer as most comments were about improper storage but I would expect a cigar shop to be able to answer this question.
The second time I stopped in to take a look at some bigger humidors as a friend was bringing me back some cigars from Cuba and I needed more storage space. I was also going to be purchasing a humidor for him. A younger woman was working with what looked like dyed blonde/grey hair. She was busy so I did what any cigar lover does when waiting, check out the in-store humidor. It did not take long for her to come in. Although I really felt like I was being watched, which is a sad state of affairs that they feel the need to do this since it really ruins the experience. I did ask her some questions and she was helpful in answering them. I detected a tone of condescension however as some people are not aware of their tone, I just chalked it up to this. When we finished in the humidor, I went out to ask her questions about their desktop humidors. While she was helpful at the start, this deteriorated and I do not believe her tone is accidental. I asked her about several humidors and her tone appeared to become increasingly inappropriate. My final question was about the Brigham Millennium humidor and what it came with. Her response was that it came with a sponge and hygrometer. Knowing that there are many brands of these, I asked what kind. Her extremely sarcastic tone in the response of "well it is a Brigham humidor" was when I had heard enough and I commented, "I'm done here". Her reply, again sarcastically, was that the store had closed 10 minutes earlier but she was staying open for me. I did not bother replying that I was not aware of this and perhaps she should have told me. I just wanted to get out of there. It should be noted that I believe I went in there at about 7:50pm (though my clock in my vehicle had not been adjusted for daylight savings so I thought it was 6:50pm).
I have since been to the Brigham store on Queen Street East in the Beaches area of Toronto. While parking is a pain, it is worth the drive as not only will you get a better overall price for a humidor (it comes with many extras), the staff are friendly and will treat you with respect. I went in on two separate days and got excellent service from three different employees. They even do the initial seasoning for you to get your humidor ready for your cigars! And while they will not let you into their humidor alone, they will not make you feel like you are being monitored while you are in there. read more
