In addition to being a space for trade and union activity, this historic building is also an asset to arts and cultural events in Melbourne. I was first introduced to the space when attending shows at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Small and large rooms throughout the building were converted into performance spaces and a central bar provided a social meeting place before and after the shows. (Complete with heaters, as the open bar space is quite drafty.) The Bella Union performance venue also resides here, with bands, comedy, impro, theatre, and dance parties all on the program. The building is well loved - deep grooves are worn into the stairs from the number of feet that trod up and down over the last 150+ years. read more
