This is the strangest park I've ever seen. I'm not sure that you can actually call this place a…read morepark... it's more accurately a 100X100 foot plot of land with overgrown trees, trash scattered about, and one single park bench in on the Northern end that looks like a great place to be shanghaied or given the shocker by an unsuspecting drifter. However, that's one of the things I dig the most about San Francisco. Instead of wasting one single square foot of land, they make it a park. While you probably won't ever see families celebrating birthdays or a group of dudes playing a game of flag football, it's still an area of land that can be enjoyed by anyone in the city at any time. It'd be swell if some of those tax dollars could to go keeping this place nice, though. Perhaps I'll grab a cup of coffee with ol' Gav Dogg and give him a piece of my mind.

The park consists of large open green space, perfect for laying out or enjoying a picnic. There are walking paths lined with decent amounts of shade, a children's playground, and apparently is the home for wild parakeet. Ferry Park is well kept and surprisingly clean aside from the 2 tall cans that were littered at the playground. LMAO. With the park being located across the way from the pier, the view is great. 4 stars. During our visit, there was the farmers market happening over at the pier. Should you time things correctly, you could easily grab yourself a snack and enjoy it here. Seating is plentiful.

It has swings, 4 slides of varying heights for different ages or courage levels. The play equipment has multiple levels and other interactive elements (like tic tac toe etc.). Below the main play structure there are fun features for smaller children. There are picnic tables right next to the playground, a short walking trail and a big grassy hill for open play. Cons: there is a mirror element and it gets blisteringly hot as the sun hits it (we were there from 9-10am) and my poor toddler touched it in her excitement of seeing her reflection! Ouch! There also isn't really any shade )unless you are playing below the structure), so it's pretty hot. Additional information: although this is a public park managed by HARD, it's right next to a private pool and clubhouse for the Columbia neighborhood that the park is in. There is a parking lot right next to the park, but it's only for people going to the pool and clubhouse (you will need to find street parking). There are large power lines going through this neighborhood and are next to the park. There is a very slight buzzing noise if you listen closely enough, but it quickly and easily gets drowned out by the sound of passing cars on the road next to the park. I would actually give this park a 4.5, but half stars are not an option. All in all, it's a very nice little park!

This park has two play areas, lots of grass, a four person teeter totter AND a putting green . The smaller of the two play areas is geared towards younger children, is gated in, has one short sidewinder slide, steps, educational and musical activities, a short bridge and a tunnel. The second play area has a slide accessible only by ladder, suspended rope with overhead holder for aided balancing, two styles of monkey bars, suspended lily pads, a rope tower, spring bottom platforms for more balance practice, and a rope arch. The two play areas are close to each other which is nice if you have multiple kids of varying abilities. There is a public bathroom (we didn't try it) and lots of shade from the big trees around the park. So that could be a little hard thank God I don't really drink so that was an issue for me until we left. lol I'm sure there's a lot of cute little hidden gems in the park where you could have your private party, but check this one out pretty cool and it's big enough where they were playing dodgeball which was some kind of drinking game they made up it was pretty funny they had great time.

If you've ever taken part in a One Brick gardening project the chances are fairly high that you…read morealready know about or have worked on the maintenance of Rhododendron Island in Golden Gate Park. If you've driven past Spreckels Lake, run along the western end of John F. Kennedy Drive or have completed the entire San Francisco Bay to Breakers course you've probably seen Rhododendron Island without knowing it. Rhododendron Island sits on John F. Kennedy Drive and 36th Avenue sandwiched in between Spreckels Lake and the Golden Gate Park Equestrian Center. As the history of this patch of land goes it had always been a garden filled with a wide array of rhododendron varieties until City budget issues and neglect turned it into a forest of non-native plants, overgrown weeds and litter. Enter volunteer organization One Brick in the summer of 2003 whose volunteers assembled on site on a regular basis to clean up the patch of land, remove the plants that didn't belong and re-introduce different varieties of rhododendrons and azaleas. It took the volunteer group an entire year, but in the summer of 2004 they completed their project transforming this patch of land back to a garden filled with rhododendrons, azaleas and different tree species. Today, Rhodendron Island is one of the signature events for One Brick. There is a project nearly every month, rain or shine, where volunteers come out to help maintain the gardens, pull out new weeds, lay down weed cover, spread mulch, trim or remove unwanted plants. In my five years of volunteering through One Brick I have probably worked on the island over a dozen times and I've done all of the things listed at one time or another, but I did something two weekends ago that I had never done here before. It was a Saturday and rain was forecasted for that morning. About fifteen or so hearty volunteers including myself turned out. The skies were overcast but dry when we gathered. We noticed the drops of water slowly come down plopping onto the surface of Spreckels Lake across the street. The San Francisco Rec and Parks Department gardener told us he wanted us to prepare the land and help him plant some azaleas into the garden. In less than two hours under a steady rain our group of muddy, wet volunteers dug out weeds and unwanted grass patches and replaced them with 90 azalea plants of different varieties and different sizes. Ninety!! In the words of the gardener himself we were a planting machine, and had he not run out of plants we would have kept going as we were all quite enthusiastic about adding new life to the garden. Rhododendron Island is best to visit in late March or early April when many of the plants begin to flower. For me anyway it'll be interesting to see how many of our 90 plants survived. This little patch across from Speckles Lake used to be overgrown. Thanks to the work of volunteers, there are plantings and it can be a little secluded picnic area. Restrooms right across the street on the west end of the lake. The flowers bloom occasionally. Sometimes it's fairly mundane. My one recommendation is that during the wet times of the year the lower areas get pretty swampy. But that is common in a lot of spots around GGP and Lands End.
