A review of a council run leisure centre should probably really focus on what the place sets out to…read moreachieve. I would guess that it aims to provide a place for the public to fulfil their leisure requirements, with decent equipment available, a good selection of classes, served by good staff and all reasonably priced. With the above in mind I can not fault Carlton Forum. I moved to the gym in here from a more expensive National Chain, for the simple reason that I needed to save a few quid where possible. Having ditched my £65 per month subs at the previous gym I am now paying £31 per month at Carlton Forum. So what have I lost for the £34 per month I now get to keep in my pocket??? Well the luxury definitely, the nice plush sofas, a receptionist with a perfect smile and model looks etc etc. But in terms of the need it intends to fulfil - that of keeping fit - absolutely nothing! Carlton Forum provides access to all the equipment I need to carry out my regimes exactly as before and the atmosphere is less pretentious than the previous place, giving a more communal and relaxed feeling when you finally pluck up the courage to visit the gym. Obviously there are a wide range of things on offer beyond that of just the gym. Swimming, tennis, football, badminton, exercise classes, spinning classes, squash etc etc. So there really should be something for everyone.

The prices are reasonable and you get discount with the Gedling Leisure card. There is a bar upstairs, however if you are looking for a drink in the day they only have vending machines.

I haven't skated there, but swam with the kids many times. From a parents perspective, it's far too cold! The main pools aren't too bad but the baby pool is absolutely freezing and it's a little dark and dreary as well. The changing rooms are a bit hit-and-miss: pretty much what you get in any swimming pool of this era, and a little dirty. They're mixed male & female but there aren't many that are big enough for parents and kids to share. They seem to open the big slides and outdoor pool at random times - perhaps there is a pattern to it, but whenever I've been there I've been told that certain features are closed due to staffing. A bit disappointing when you've paid to take the kids there and the particular slide they want is closed. I understand, however, that it is currently closed for refurbishment (Nov 08) so I'm really hoping that it is greatly improved when it re-opens as the basics are there and eldest loves it. It's worth a visit, but go with fairly low expectations and hopefully be pleasantly surprised by it!
