And being owned and run by an Afghan Family you wouldn't expect this name to have been the most obvious choice. Established two years ago this small business has been doing very well. It's forged friendships with other businesses on Gloucester Road that provide regular income, such as Billie Jean Clothing, another concern that is weathering the recession well. As well as making new garments and curtains from scratch, Brunel Tailoring have a nifty sideline in repairs and alterations. I've never taken advantage of their tailoring services, so I can't vouch for that, but I had three items altered recently, all for the incredibly affordable price of £14.00! Saraj, the owner, comes from a family with a long tailoring tradition in his home country, and was savvy enough to work for an Italian tailoring company when he first came to the UK. When ready, he decided to branch out on his own. A brave move in a volatile economy! But at the price I am sure that he'll continue to do well.

Basically, when I was getting married I needed my trousers taking up, so I headed into the centre and was quoted around £15 for this simple alteration. I had a look at Yell.com and called this place who quoted half the price. The shop is a little ramshackle, but it's friendly, independent, cheap and they did a great job. One thing: make sure you know where it is before you set out. It's tucked away in Brislington (though near St Phillips) and one end of the road it's on isn't accessible by car.

My sister in law had one or tow things taken up there, she said she was good and not too ppricey so when a friend of mine helped custom build some body armour it didn't sit right, so I took that up there, she was quick to make the adjustments. Also looking at the work done with a keen eye I realised how well she had actually done it... months later I found my self struck with an idea. For me I tend not to 'follow fashion' and if I could make my own clothes I probably would.... but I cant. So getting my materials together I got her to copy my favourite style of combats in a snakeskin print. Since it was relatively big project and I'm never in any great rush. It took a few weeks, for which I'm happy with, since I'd rather some one did take their time. And low and behold a new pair of shiny combats. Again doing a bang up job! Well this fuels my addiction a little more just so I e-bayed more material. After a little trial an error. I got some pretty exquisite print. Then again she did an another amazing job on them, my only gripe (and this is me being fussy) the thigh pockets were a bit low. She has also helped a bit with other body armour issues and custom built armour plating carriers for me, which helps in my line of work. But you know for me, its not just about going into a place and asking someone to help me create something, yes there are other place that would do that, but you know I like the friendliness. I go there give her some material and a design, we all have a chat and some friendly banter. And that's why I enjoy doing business with them. Also she is very good at problem solving...lol and believe me I do like to throw these curve balls...

The gentleman was friendly & approachable however the lady working in there I felt she was hostile & I was not deserving of her time. Safe to say I left within 2 minutes of entering & will not be back. A shame as I had been recommended this business.

I suffer from this problems often, and as I'm not about to learn how to sew, I was in desperate need of a good tailors/alterations business. This odd little place was advertised in the local paper, so I went to investigate, with an especially annoying pair of new trousers. Step inside and it looks like another cheapy clothes store, the new clothes they sell are nothing but market-stall fodder and not really worth a second glance. They charged £10 to take up my trews, and did it within 3 days. I had to be measured and was man-handled by a woman (it was fine, I'm just not used to going to a tailors!) I have to admit, despite the rather depressing shop and unspectacular surrounds and service, I have been pleased with the result. The hems are even and the length just right, and looks like they'll stay put. They also do repairs of almost all items of clothing. Might be worth going somewhere a bit pricier/ more upmarket if you want your Gucci suit/ballgown/wedding dress altered though.
