I suffer from this problems often, and as I'm not about to learn how to sew, I was in desperate need of a good tailors/alterations business. This odd little place was advertised in the local paper, so I went to investigate, with an especially annoying pair of new trousers. Step inside and it looks like another cheapy clothes store, the new clothes they sell are nothing but market-stall fodder and not really worth a second glance. They charged £10 to take up my trews, and did it within 3 days. I had to be measured and was man-handled by a woman (it was fine, I'm just not used to going to a tailors!) I have to admit, despite the rather depressing shop and unspectacular surrounds and service, I have been pleased with the result. The hems are even and the length just right, and looks like they'll stay put. They also do repairs of almost all items of clothing. Might be worth going somewhere a bit pricier/ more upmarket if you want your Gucci suit/ballgown/wedding dress altered though.

Basically, when I was getting married I needed my trousers taking up, so I headed into the centre and was quoted around £15 for this simple alteration. I had a look at Yell.com and called this place who quoted half the price. The shop is a little ramshackle, but it's friendly, independent, cheap and they did a great job. One thing: make sure you know where it is before you set out. It's tucked away in Brislington (though near St Phillips) and one end of the road it's on isn't accessible by car.

And being owned and run by an Afghan Family you wouldn't expect this name to have been the most obvious choice. Established two years ago this small business has been doing very well. It's forged friendships with other businesses on Gloucester Road that provide regular income, such as Billie Jean Clothing, another concern that is weathering the recession well. As well as making new garments and curtains from scratch, Brunel Tailoring have a nifty sideline in repairs and alterations. I've never taken advantage of their tailoring services, so I can't vouch for that, but I had three items altered recently, all for the incredibly affordable price of £14.00! Saraj, the owner, comes from a family with a long tailoring tradition in his home country, and was savvy enough to work for an Italian tailoring company when he first came to the UK. When ready, he decided to branch out on his own. A brave move in a volatile economy! But at the price I am sure that he'll continue to do well.
