Welcome to the Clifton fashion boutique Maze…read more I visited here during the January sales hoping to find a bargain, more specifically I had tried a dress on in the French Connection in town which I really liked but needed a size 8. My heart did a little jump when I found that they did indeed have a size 8! But it fell right down to my feet when I saw they had it priced more more than double the FC sale price! I asked the shop assistant if perhaps it hadn't been marked down again yet but she informed me in a kind of 'how-many-more-times-do-I-have-to-go-through-this' kind of way that although they stocked FC lines, they do not have to mirror their prices. I was quite disappointed! Generally speaking, the ladies things are very nice but very expensive. But then, that's Clifton; in the changing room I overheard someone trying a dress on for her upcoming trip down the red carpet at the BRITS or BAFTAS or something like that! I think the men's section might be a bit better though.

I've been to Heartfelt twice now for tea / coffee / cakes and I'm hopelessly enchanted. The owner,…read moreMandy, is genuine and friendly (as is her adorable puppy that floats around the shop like a little ball of well-behaved fluff). The setting is second-to-none, there are a few antique-y tables surrounded by vintage-everything draped vintage-everywhere. When other customers come in, they're often greeted by name and it gives you the feel that Heartfelt has a very happy and loyal fan-base in it's little nook on Alma Vale Road. I'll warn you now, though - you'll go in for a coffee and a cake, or a nice lunch and you'll end up wanting to buy one of everything before you leave. This single shop could provide my entire wardrobe (although it's slightly pricey, it's also completely unique - not a bad combination IMO). Heartfelt isn't in an obvious location so it's easy to miss, but it's well worth seeking out. It's less than a 5-minute walk from the major coffee shops on Whiteladies Road and it's endlessly better than those impersonal giants...

And being owned and run by an Afghan Family you wouldn't expect this name to have been the most obvious choice. Established two years ago this small business has been doing very well. It's forged friendships with other businesses on Gloucester Road that provide regular income, such as Billie Jean Clothing, another concern that is weathering the recession well. As well as making new garments and curtains from scratch, Brunel Tailoring have a nifty sideline in repairs and alterations. I've never taken advantage of their tailoring services, so I can't vouch for that, but I had three items altered recently, all for the incredibly affordable price of £14.00! Saraj, the owner, comes from a family with a long tailoring tradition in his home country, and was savvy enough to work for an Italian tailoring company when he first came to the UK. When ready, he decided to branch out on his own. A brave move in a volatile economy! But at the price I am sure that he'll continue to do well.
