I was recommended this practice by 1-800-DENTIST-I remembered those 1990s commercials- after the reviews of dentists my insurance company recommended told me to run in the opposite direction. I was in absolute pain with an infected tooth but decided rather pay out-of-pocket to get an excellent job done. Dr Oelbaum's hygenists/receptionists were friendly, calm and professional and convinced me that me I was doing the right thing just by speaking with them on the phone. I even got a voice message from Dr Oelbaum 12 hours ahead of my visit telling me he looked forward to seeing me. The day of I was seen promptly and examined by Dr Oelbaum who explained what was going on with me and referred me to in-house surgeon Dr Plaut. I needed an emergency surgery to fix a broken and infected tooth. Tawana was a great hygenist as was Dr Plaut; their hands are blessed as they did not operate until I was completely numbed and were gentle and kind. They handled my significant post-op pain well and made sure my prescriptions were filled with the nearby pharmacy so I could get them quickly on my way home. Dr Plaut even called me when I got home to check that I was ok. TLDR: Great, compassionate, professional practice worth paying out-of-pocket for via CareCredit. read more

I visited Dr. Victor Oelbaum and Associates yesterday for a check up and cleaning for myself, and for an initial visit for my three year old daughter. This being her first visit to the dentist, my toddler was initially a little tearful and unsure about what she might be about to experience. Our hygienist Gina--clearly a total pro at dealing in a developmentally responsive way with such jitters--was, however, almost immediately able to put her at ease by creating a game out of the procedures in play--asking about "how much sparkle" and what flavor "sparkle" were needed for each tooth, and by eliciting my child's help in counting her teeth. I was impressed by how Gina was able to skillfully and rapidly provide a very thorough cleaning while engaging my daughter in this game. Dr. Oelbaum arrived afterward to finish the exam, and to give me some clearly worded guidelines about dental hygiene for three year olds. The grand finale was a visit to the both the tooth brush drawer and the toy box, where we were given brushes, floss, toothpaste, and a timer. Jennifer was my hygienist, and she gave me one of the most thorough cleanings of my life. She and Dr. Oelbaum were so kind and warm and concrete in their way of helping me to create a plan to more comprehensively deal with an issue with my teeth that has developed over the last year. All in all, we had a great experience and I can't recommend more highly. Thank to Dr. Oelbaum and his amazing staff, my three year old now says "I love going to the dentist"! read more

Don't bother, I went to the office on a Tuesday evening in excruciating pain; A young doctor took a look at the crown that was bothering me, he told me the crown looks fine but he suspects something is going on with the tooth underneath the crown, He said he will have the specialist to come in to check it out, the specialist did not bother to see me; later the dentist came back to tell me the specialist looked at my x-rays and recommends I see their specialist in LONG ISLAND for a consultation regarding a apicoectomy procedure. I looked at the dentist and said of all of the great dentists in Manhattan and here in the Bronx you're sending me to Long Island. He sarcastically said we cannot make you; do you drive? you could take the bus or the trains! I thought to myself how unethical, you see me in pain, but you refer me to a specialist in Long Island just to keep the money revolving between practices. It was wrong and purely insensitive. He gave me a script for about 28 clindamycin capsules (too many) and ibprophen. On top of this mess, I hope they will not be sending me a bill, I was told $79 for consultation which I paid for, the assistant told me she plans to do 18 x-rays, I told her I do not have dental coverage and I hope not to be charged extra, she went to the front, came back and told me it's all good I would only be charged $79. We shall see. Thank you to the ladies at the front desk and the assistant for being pleasant. Health care is going down the drain. It is all about money. read more

I hated the dentist because of past bad experiences so when I came to this office for the first time I was scared to death but they're so nice here it eased my mind. I feel at home here. I was cold from the AC and was given a blanket. I know it's expensive to take care of your teeth but I don't mind spending the money for the care that I receive here. I went to the office after reading all of the great reviews expecting a positive experience. Boy was I wrong. The front desk staff was fine but that doesnt matter as I dont go to a dentist because of who is working at the front desk. The woman who took my xrays was also thorough and pleasant but raised my antennae when she asked me to write a review before I saw the dentist. Judging by what happened after Im guessing that this is the source of most of the positive reviews. Ive gotten consultations and quotes for cosmetic work from 5 dentists including this one. 4 told me they could do it, how they would do it and the cost. All 4 suggested I get crowns and warned me that I wasnt a candidate for braces. The dentist I saw at this office told me the exact opposite. He said I needed all kinds of work that would take a year(some of which I already had done 4 months ago and was told by the dentist who did them that I never needed to have done again), braces and crowns. Basically every expensive service they offer. Of course the cost would be astronomical. 3 and 4 times the cost of what every other dentist quoted. Im 100% sure that the only reasons he suggested these treatments were to get me to spend as much as possible and because hes a pompous, inept prick. Which was the worse part of the experience. The arrogance and idiotic look on the dentist face. Btw I saw the younger dentist not Dr. Oelbaum. Maybe he would have been better and professional. I went to Victor Oelbaum's dental office for a consultation. I was informed that my insurance was not participating with this dentist. I asked how much for a consultation. They informed me that it would be $85.00. I was called in and prep for X-Rays. I again explained that I only wanted, "a consultation". They told me not to worry; they were not going to charge me anything because they would submit payment to my health insurance. I again asked about fees for X-Rays and they told me not to worry, it was part of my consultation. A few months later, I receive my first bill for over $250.00 Dr. Oelbaum office is a very nice facility with a professional staff and a modern look, however, they were not forth rite with the fees for the consultation and X-Rays. They were evasive when asked about the fees and acted like they would accept what was sent to them by my insurer. This was not the case. I would stay away from Dr. Oelbaum's dental office if your insurance does not participate with this provider, or make sure that you get an estimate in writing for all fees, if not you might be surprised when you get your bill. read more

I have been a patient at Dr. Oelbaum's office for at least 8 years now, all of which I have been extremely satisfied with the care I receive. I TRUST Dr. O and the wonderful professionals he has working with him... They are knowledgeable, experienced and capable of caring for clients that have had/need extensive work. I came to Dr. Oelbaum frustrated and anxious due to constant mishaps and the need for more dental work when going to other dentists. I am so happy I found this office. Dr Kaegen is my primary dentist. He is a phenomenal dentist/Columbia graduate, very meticulous with his work and so caring with wonderful bedside manner. Selin is my dental hygienist she's amazing!! It is always a great, non painful experience; best cleanings ever. I travel 40+ miles to get to the office, I am a provider myself so I have options and luckily the means to pick and choose where I want to receive dental care. But like I said I trust these experienced world class professionals that are working at Dr. Oelbaum's and happily return for great care each time. read more

This review is for the extreme candy lovers who did not take heed to the dangers of excessive candy ... So just like me, no doubt you will hear the dreaded words "root canal"...however there is hope... In the form of Dr. Strickman and Dr. Oelbaum ... They are the BEST...I've had previous root canals (as I said before extreme candy eater)...so I was afraid of my impending doom..but to my surprise ..no pain..yes my friends it is possible...
