In Miami, finding a solid cultural activity is rare, so when I heard about the Michelangelo Art…read moreExperience at CitizenM South Beach, I was all in. As an art lover, this was un vero sogno.
Set on the ground floor of the hotel, this temporary exhibit reimagines the traditional museum visit. Instead of static frames, it transports you into full-sized, high-def reproductions of Michelangelo's most iconic works. It opens with a short but powerful video about his early life, the perfect setup to get you in the right headspace.
The journey begins with Bacchus, god of wine and pleasure, radiating that Renaissance joy and dolce vita....! Then the mood shifts to La Pietà, frozen in grief and beauty. You're left speechless when you realize Michelangelo sculpted it at just 23. Che talento!
Next comes The Last Judgment, displayed through illuminated panels that pull you into its divine drama, equal parts awe and fear. Then the tone lightens: enter the pop-art section with neon Moses and a playful remix of Michelangelo through modern lenses.
One highlight? The dream cloud room, a soft-lit fantasy space that any Instagrammer would call paradise. It's made for floating poses and artsy angles. Then there's the wall of Davids, the iconic sculpture reinterpreted through pop culture, where you can pick your favorite based on your inner superhero or cartoon crush.
Wander further and you're greeted by the two whimsical cherubic angels borrowed from Raphael's Sistine Madonna, casually lounging with that dreamy, daydreaming gaze. They guide you, playfully and poetically, toward the next visual crescendo: the Sistine Chapel ceiling projection.
This is where the magic deepens. The iconic fresco is projected overhead, and thanks to Cristina, one of the amazing guides, you get all the behind-the-scenes details: the critic banished to hell in paint, Michelangelo inserting his own flayed skin into The Last Judgment as a quiet protest, and his habit of sculpting women with masculine features due to his preference for male models. The insight adds depth to the beauty.
And yes, that moment: God and Adam's almost-touch. Here, it's not only projected but also rendered as a giant sculptural interpretation, perfect for striking that "Insta"pose.
Finally, you're back on Miami ground with the grand finale: a full-size replica of David. Regal, defiant, perfectly lit for one last snap. Around him, playful pop variations echo the spirit of the exhibit, classic art, reimagined for today.
Cristina and team, grazie mille for curating this bold visual journey through the mind of one of history's greatest creators. Whether you're here for the Renaissance, the storytelling, or just the next viral photo, questa mostra è da non perdere specially for the price compared to other similar exhbits in the area
