    American Legion

    American Legion

This American Legion has a group of friendly and caring individuals who volunteer for various…read moreevents for our veterans. Whether it is Friday night bingo (a fundraising event), a dinner and music event, or visiting our veterans at the LaSalle County Veteran's Nursing Home, they always make time to serve the public and raise money or hold events in support of the USA military. This is a family friendly venue. Their building is somewhat outdated; however, they have been rehabbing for the past few years and have made pleasant updates. Their rental fees are reasonable and their prices on food, baked goods, alcohol, and dinner and dance tickets are reasonable as well. If you need to rent a place for a meeting, birthday party, family reunion, funeral dinner and the like, this Legion is perfect. I do not believe a large wedding party would benefit from the smaller building and since it is somewhat dated, you may not like the decor. The decor includes paneling from approximately the 1960s and numerous military photographs, prints, plaques, etc... I like the military history at the Legion and enjoy looking at the soldiers' uniforms, certificates and such. It has a small bar area with tables and chairs off of the kitchen and front room. There is a disability ramp outside as well as stairs and small deck. The large full kitchen would do well with the caterer of your choice. The American Legion has been an important member of the Marseilles community for numerous years due to dedicated volunteers from generations of local families. I highly reccomend their events!

I joined my husband's family in celebration of his birthday. We had a late lunch at a local…read morerestaurant and convened here to continue the celebration. I have never been to a VFW, but found this location to be a fun and relaxing venue. I met a few veterans and their families who brought food for all to enjoy. Libations were offered at the bar at a reasonable cost. A band was scheduled to play at 7 pm, but I had to leave and didn't get to hear them. I'm sure they did a good job. Out of curiosity, I did a little research about this particular post and its namesake. I learned that the Harry E. Anderson Post 9545 Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States was established on July 19, 1947. Corporal Anderson was the first soldier in Will County Illinois to die during World War II. He was killed in Guam on December 7, 1941. On September 12, 1995, the post was completely destroyed by fire. However, plans to rebuild the it began almost immediately while trailers served as the temporary post. On November 19, 1996, the new building was completed and formally dedicated on January 11, 1997. VFW Post 9545 is one amongst approximately 9,000 posts worldwide. Its mission is to "honor the dead by helping the living" through veterans' services, community services, national security, and a strong national defense. Frankly, I'm impressed with the organization and its structure; specifically, VFW Post 9545. I took a photo of its organization chart. I'm an American who actually likes being an American. Yes, the country has its issues just like all countries. But the USA is my home

VFW Post 2801 - Fish fry on Fridays for lent, packs them in.

This place is anything but cranky old men complaining about the war. My first experience here was completely surprising. I came for the Friday fish fry with my father and the nugget, who was a baby at the time. During Lent, this place is PACKED with people on Friday nights. I could not believe it. While waiting for my fish to arrive, I got a glass of wine at the bar. I thought I misheard the price...nope I didn't...it was soooo cheap compared to a bar or restaurant. After I bit into a nice meaty piece of fried fish, I was hooked (buh duh cha). The fish fry continues all year long...not just during Lent. Don't like fish, no problem. They have Italian Beef sandwiches, hot dogs, and fried shrimp. The price of your meal also includes coffee, and cake for dessert. You can't go wrong. Don't forget to bring some cash for the raffles. They usually do a 50/50 raffle, and some other thing. For Valentine's Day there was a delicious pork dinner and a band. For St. Paddy's they do a corned beef dinner. High suggested! Tuesday is Bingo and Thursday is wing night. There is almost always something going on here. Check it out!

There's a lot to like about Post 103, I just wish it was closer to my house. HOW TO JOIN: Buzz the buzzer, tell the bartender you want to join, and pay $35. If you didn't serve in the military you join the "Sons," but as far as I know everyone gets the same access to the club and the activities there. I haven't experienced anything bad about being in the Sons versus whatever a "full" member is called, they just seem happy to have you and glad you're involved. FOOD AND DRINK: Bottled beer and a full bar, along with tons of options for food. I believe you can always get pizza, but they also have a full dinner menu and tons of specials. They cook their frozen pizzas right at the bar, meaning everyone sitting there can smell it. It's pretty amusing seeing one person get a pizza, and everyone else being like, "Hey that smells pretty good I'll take one too." Their full menu is served Tuesday through Thursday, 5:30 to 8:30. The full menu has typical fried appetizers, burgers, sandwiches, and wraps. On Fridays they do a dinner special which rotates. EVENTS: They do a ton of stuff here, and do a fantastic job keeping their Facebook updated so you always know what's going on. There's always weird stuff to do on the calendar (posted on FB) like spaghetti dinners, DJ's playing, and of course huge parties for local sports and holidays. Oh and they have outdoor bowling as well. GAMBLING: Amvets has a bunch of slot machines, and on Tuesdays they run Lightning, which is sort of like ultra fast-paced bingo where you have a card with three numbers. Lightning has multiple layers to it, which I honestly don't really fully understand, but has something to do with winning a game gives you an option to win bigger/better prizes that roll over week over week? Also, they do Queen of Hearts here, which snowballs into huge pots. Queen of Hearts is on the first Friday of each month, but check the calendar on FB. CLUB FACILITIES: Amvets is HUGE. The main bar area has tons of seats, and we've never had a problem finding a place to sit. They've also got a giant dining room area which gets rented out, we see a lot of quinceaneras and other similar stuff (or what looks like a quinceanera, anyway) along with wedding receptions and more. The bathrooms are weirdly giant as well. They've got a bunch of outdoor seating around their bowling lanes, and there's a huge stocked pond that members can fish in. WHY WE LIKE IT: The bartenders are absurdly friendly, and we're excited to get involved in the fishing this year. They're also one of the only places in town that has fried pickles, the ultimate fried food. They also make it real easy to make sure you're not missing out on anything by being great at Facebookin'.
