The trails are also well-kept although don't be surprised if you find some debris and trash floating around on the grounds and the trail. Seems like it's gotten worse over the past few years. It's a shame as this area provides lovely views during nature walks when the sun is out and the breeze is blowing at a lovely pace. In addition, there is a playground and a softball/baseball diamond tucked here. You'll hear the sounds of bats connecting with balls and kids shouting since baseball games are played here often.

From the picnic tables, their history and due diligence of restoration, to the French mum's memorial for all mums, reading every word of every plaque, this town has some history, pride, love and devotion it cherished and is delighted to share in this way. So thrilled I could walk through and embrace every bit on such a cold and blistery November day. Doing so warmed me to the bone. The tribute plaque regarding the Vietnam Memorial replica that occurred at A&M for a week in 1999 at the George Bush Library was most heartwarming indeed. Albeit I'd like to kick the idiot who failed in proofreading the plaque. In the pic enclosed, the line which states: The gallant heroes who's names are .......ugh, it's WHOSE....how embarrassing. And this plaque has been there for over a decade!! Otherwise, this park is magnificent!!

One consequence of that is sometimes a shrinking green belt. So maybe it wasn't a surprise that someone associated with the Texas A&M Foundation came up with the idea of a multi-use park with its own capital campaign. I had a chance to visit Aggie Park (and linger) during my Class of 1980 Reunion Weekend. When I was here at the time, this is where Bonfire was located. This impressive and attractive leafy park contains over 20 acres of outdoor spaces for study, relaxation, tailgating, entertainment and recreation for students, staff, faculty, and campus visitors. It has strong ties to Kyle Field and Aggie Football weekends, the Association of Former Students, University Center & Special Events, and the Division of Student Affairs, and is really a lot of things to the entire TAMU community. They even resurrected the old Creamery and installed a nice calm lake (stocked with fish), with a well placed bridge. Aggie Park is truly a great outdoor space within an easy walking distance from the central campus. I hope to return soon.

The park's namesake is Garrett Hysmith, an energetic College Station boy who, by the time he died in 2005 at age 13, had bravely fought brain cancer for four years. He loved music and Boy Scouts, but was most passionate about skateboarding. Two years after his death, his closest friends embarked on what they would dub Operation Garrett: Convincing the College Station City Council to include a skate park as part of a bond package that would go before voters. In 2008, 65 percent of those voters embraced the idea at the ballot box. Operation Garrett would, indeed, create a proper place for skateboarders -- a $920,000 facility -- to safely practice and perfect their sport.
