I had a really good experience with Veteran's Cab a few minutes ago and I thought I'd share the experience with you. Trying to be fair to our local cab businesses, I called to get a pick up from another cab company (Yellow Cab).. 10 minutes pass and there is no cab. Called back and the operator said the dispatcher was still trying to find a cab in my area for the pick up. Another 5 minutes pass and still nothing. Just about to request a car through an app (from one of those easy-peasy car services), I notice a red & white vehicle (a Veteran's cab) flash by and I raise my arm. The taxi driver was pretty sharp and he looped around the block and lickety-split, he's back in front of me and my companion. We have some stuff to move from Point A to Point B so we don't just hop into the vehicle. The taxi driver sees that this is the case and he gets out of the car and helps us load items (including a big box) into the trunk. Off we go. The driver knows these streets and he zips up 9th Street where the lights are timed. Good thinking! Along the way he chats about what events are going on in the City today and the neighborhood which we are passing through (the Tenderloin). He comments about the rise in car break-in crime in the TL; owners of buildings who have to repeatedly paint over the graffiti that cover their neat, uniform exteriors. He says it's so sad that the City has these things happening. Having an easy going nature, the taxi driver follows my directions to navigate to Point B (stay in the right lane, cross this street, make a right on that one, turn left at the next intersection, pull over to the left-hand side). Once we arrive at Point B, the taxi driver gets out of the car, opens my door so I can easily exit and carries the big box we had stowed in the trunk to the front door. Easy dealings to pay him the fare. Mister Taxi Driver of cab# 1512, thanks for a positive experience in your vehicle! So courteous to help with the big box! I want to have faith that there are good, hard-working taxi drivers out there. Now I know there still are! Update - I waited over an hour this Friday for a cab from Veterans. Over an hour. I called back two times to check on the cab. They said they were still working on it. I called back to cancel. I called Luxor and told them how long I had been waiting with Veteran's and they made sure to send over someone pronto. Original review - Since driving isn't really my thing - I take a lot of public transportation and cabs in this city. As a result I've come to learn that cab driver's attitudes can really set the tone of the beginning and end, of my day and night. Which is why I always strive to put good energy into my cab world...and am so thankful for the dazzling cab gems who have flown through my life. (like the random older cab driver who strictly drove with his knees, while playing the flute with both hands, with his adorable dog Heidi in the front seat...He was not a Veteran's Cab driver. And it must be noted that he drove very well with his knees.). Anyways... I've been using Veteran's cab for awhile now. And yeah there are days, when I can't get through to them on the phone. And yeah there are days, where I'll find myself calling back after 20 minutes or so - to check if my cab is still coming, only to find out that they're still working on finding someone. But the nice thing about Veteran's is that they're still a somewhat fairly small operation - so they actually listen to you and care when you call. They can't always get the cab over to you - as fast as they'd like to, but you can rest assured that they're trying. And most nights or days when I call - they pull through and I'm greeted by a friendly reliable driver. After leaving a show yesterday, a Veteran's cab pulled out of nowhere. The driver donned a huge grin and asked how my night was. We started talking about music and the topic of the Grateful Dead came up. He began to recount a crazy story of how him and his friend scored tickets for a sold out Madison Square Garden show. And in the middle of his story I heard him say my new favorite catch phrase ever... "...That's What's Up." Genius end to the night. PS. Dropping 92 yr old mom at doctor appointment (2100 Webster). Veteran's Cab sitting on white zone, driver looking at his phone. Unable to safely let mom out of the car so pulled up to ramp in crosswalk so that she could more easily navigate out of the car with her walker while my husband assisted. Asked the driver why he was just sitting in the cab waiting for no one. "Why are you talking to me?" Asked if he could've just waited at the end of the white zone so that others could more easily let passengers out of the car. He yells "BITCH." Called their dispatch to report this and dispatch explains that driver was waiting for a disabled passenger and what did I expect? That the ride walk down the block? There was NO passenger/rider in view so how was dispatch able to tell me this? Driver could have easily driven around the block and, as a courtesy, allowed others to SAFELY drop off. Dispatch was extremely rude - "You sound like you were pretty worked up." UH, yes, when someone yells out BITCH while I'm trying to get my elderly, disabled mom SAFELY out of the car. This is a terrible way for a company to even attempt to explain rude, uncalled for behavior. read more

Rude racist driver kept telling my Russian grandparents that he knoess where to go because he is American. He got lost and was trying to kick them out in the wrong spot. They insisted on being taken to their destination and we're forced to pay him for for all the extra mileage and they were later to their medical appointment. STAY AWAY! read more

Witnessed one of their cabs making a completely illegal u-turn in front of Pier 39. They were unable to complete the illegal u-turn because of law-abiding cars who were backed up in the lane he wanted to go into. So he blasted his horn for 2 minutes straight. The line was not able to move, so the light changes and now traffic is completely blocked by this horrible driver. A dangerous situation for other drivers, and pedestrians like myself. If Yelp's rating system were, instead of giving more stars for being good, a rating system with dicks, the more dicks you get the worse your company was, I would give Veteran's Cab 5 dicks. Seeing as I have to even give them one star and can't give negative stars, they get a star. I hopped into one of their cabs last night (I think....I'll admit up front I was drinking and I vaguely remember getting into a red, green and white Prius cab, which the internet told me was Veteran's) and was promptly taken to my house. At some point I dropped my phone in it and didn't notice, probably because I was too busy getting felt up by some hot guy and that is understandably distracting. Anyway, as soon as I get home I have that pants-shitting moment of terror when I realize my phone is just gone. I emptied my purse full of half-eaten tacos and condoms and no phone. BLAST! So I call Veteran's and talk to the douchiest dispatcher from hell who probably has no girlfriend or a fat wife, as he is a miserable curmudgeon (like me...I have no girlfriend, but wait I'm not even gay or AM I?). I tell him the situation, hear him ask over the radio if anyone has found a phone where I was dropped off (literally 2 minutes earlier), and hear him in the background arguing with at least one and as many as two cab drivers, providing such witty comebacks as "Yeah I know you heard me, I'm GLAD you heard me!" And then back to me "Sorry, nobody's found a phone." Uhh....really? I just left it in there, you can't ask again, this time while NOT BEING A DICK TO EVERYONE? When I said this (not the being a dick part) he yells back at me "WELL I'M NOT THE ONE WHO LOST MY PHONE IN A CAB, YOU DID!" and then immediately hung up on me. So helpful yay thanks man! This story has a happy ending, for those of us who immediately feel the need to seek death revenge upon any who ever slightly cross us, aka me and Moammar Ghaddafi. I still haven't found my phone (hope someone's really enjoying my shitty iPhone screen that sprouted a bunch of black lines after I dropped it a few times possibly while texting during sex and all of my boring non-sexy pictures), but I was able to call back to the same dispatcher who asked "Is this the same girl who just called about her phone?" and I was able to respond FLAWLESSLY by telling him to go fuck himself with his shitty job! It was like telling off everyone who ever called me fat in middle school by displaying hot pictures of myself in bikinis on facebook and telling them to go fuck themselves! read more

This is the only cab company in town that has never screwed me over. I also like them the best because they still use radio dispatch, which reminds me of the good old days. The computerized dispatch that Yellow and Luxor have may make them more efficient, but it also makes it less personal and easier for drivers to blow you off since they don't have a dispatcher to be accountable to. Veterans is a small, venerable operation that dates back to the post-WWII days, when returning war veterans were given taxi medallions as economic incentive. After the demise of City Cab (which used to be big when I was younger) all the companies did some restructuring, and Veterans and Arrow merged at some point a few years ago. Which is why if you call Veterans, sometimes you'll get an Arrow and vice versa. But it's the same color scheme/company, etc. And I find them to be fast, responsive, personal, and the drivers are generally higher quality than at the bigger companies, where they will take anyone with a license just to fill shifts. I hate to knock on a company based on 1 incompetent driver, however this cabbie was worthless. He lacked all necessary requirements of being an efficient cab driver; namely the ability to drive appropriately and knowledge of the city you serve! We hailed a Veteran cab downtown on Market and Montgomery late Saturday night to get us safely home to the sunset. The first issue I have is that when I asked the cabbie if they accepted credit card, he acted as if he didn't know. He asked how far we were going and how much it would cost before telling us if he can accept plastic. Come on dude, you either accept them or you don't! I guess my answer of $30 sufficed his requirement and he affirmed that they accepted credit cards. Once we started driving, we gave him the cross streets of where we were going and the following conversation ensued: Me: "Please take us to Wawona and 37th street" Cab Driver: "I don't know where that is..." Me: "It's in the sunset; do you know how to get there?" Cab Driver: "No, where is it near?" Me: "The San Francisco Zoo. Do you know where that is?" Cab Driver: "No" Me: "... Okay then... turn here" (5 minutes later) Me: "So are you new to the city? Or taxi driving?" Cab Driver: "No, I've been driving cabs here for 20 years!" WTF?! I proceeded to have to give him turn by turn directions all the way to our house. I'll be very surprised if he was able to find his way back. Meanwhile, his driving was absolutely terrible. Stop and go, speeding, slamming on the breaks. What is this guys deal? I'm not even joking, when we arrived at our house, my girlfriend ran out of the car and started puking in the street because the driving had made her so sick. When I gave my credit card to pay, he was so outdated... He didn't even have a machine; he had to write my credit card number down (which concerns me), and call it in. THEN we had to wait 10 minutes on hold to get approval. THEN he had to write up this phony manual receipt for me sign! What is with this dude/company? Needless to say, this cab driver was worthless. To drive a taxi you should at least know the city or have a map, let alone have ability to drive without making your passengers sick. Also, don't be so shady with the whole payment scheme... either accept credit cards always, or never at all. And if you do, get an electronic credit card machine... This guy sucked. I will definitely pass up a veteran cab next time I need a ride home, and wait for a more legitimate taxi. read more

At about 7:30 am on New Year's Day, after working all night at a huge party, a few friends and I were waiting for another friend to get from a party in Hunter's Point to the motel near the Marina we were staying in. He had been trying to get a taxi for over an hour by phone and standing out on the street when he called to let us all know his phone was about to die. I got his address & a promise from him that he wouldn't get in a taxi that wasn't a Veterans Cab and I called Veteran's right away and told the dispatcher the situation. He got a taxi right away. I have been using Veteran's Cab weekly for the last 3 months, and they have never let me down. I've called the dispatcher the night before to arrange a 7AM next-morning ride across the City, and they're always happy to do it -- other companies I've tried won't do that. I especially like how they give me a call to update the status of the cab, whether it's "five minutes away", or "waiting outside". The different drivers have all been professional and courteous, which can't always be easy that early in the morning. I depend on them to get my week's work travel started, and have never been disappointed. read more

If this were a review of the dispatchers only, I'd give it a 5-star rating! Every time I've called this number, the wiseguys at the other end were funny and friendly without wasting any time. Best dispatchers ever. The drivers, on the other hand, are a mixed-medley. The ones that actually pick me up have been decent folks. Sometimes even friendly. None have been unpleasant. But... One time I waited and waited and was told by the dispatcher that the driver SAID he'd picked me up. (The dispatcher said a lot of things I can't repeat here, too.) Once a driver pulled up across a busy street and called my phone. Since I was standing on a noisy curb, I did not hear my phone ring, and he drove off, rather than yell out his window. OR COME AROUND THE BLOCK. He refused to come back and get me. The guy who agreed to come get me next made me wade across a busy street to get to him, RATHER THAN COME AROUND THE BLOCK and pick me up at the nice, safe curb. Since this is typical of most cab companies, I'll give the drivers 3 stars. It's more like 2.5. So I guess that's 4 Stars, but mostly for those rock star dispatchers. read more

This review has been swimming around in my head for about a year. It's such a tall order to write a review of people that you like so friggin much. The first time I called Veteran's I was struck by the fact that they call you personally when the cab is there. There's nothing worse than getting the automated message that your cab is outside when it's not. Then having to call back and wait another 30 minutes to tell the dispatcher there's no cab there. I've had the worst luck with Luxor and Yellow in these ways and was very impressed by Veteran's personal touch. So, then after a while of calling these wonderful guys, I start making friends. First Mike, then Trevor, then James, then Byron, then Bruce...the list is seriously never-ending. As soon as there was a recognizable voice on the phone, I started feeling very taken care of. I basically entered into a relationship with the whole company. I'd better see a ring on this finger soon... If you have conversational skills and understand the world of cabs like I do, you'll know immediately that these guys are something special. They'll keep you on the phone when checking up on your cab so you can hear the driver saying exactly where he is. That's amazing! No other company takes care of me and keeps me informed like Veteran's. And no other company holds me so close, stares deeply into my eyes and tells me it's going to be alright. Luxor never cradled my face in it's hands and kissed me. Yellow never took the time to tell me how much they cared. Even DeSoto neglected to reach into my heart and cure me from the inside. Veteran's has done all of this and I'm a better person for it. I've nestled my head on Veteran's bossom and fallen asleep like a baby. And you know what Veteran's did? Even though they're arm was going numb and it hurt, they didn't move it because they didn't want to disturb my innocent princess dreams. That's love. One last story is when I had them call me in the morning for a flight. I slept through the calls. And oh my, there were so many calls. Bruce called me about 10 times trying to wake me up so I didn't miss my flight. Well when I woke up with all my clothes on top of my covers and realized what happened, there were so many messages telling me to wake up, it made my heart sink. That was so very considerate. From a city girl that knows the cuts, taking the long route to up your meter is now money spent on what would have been your tip, chump. - 2 stars side note: Getting a cab in SF anywhere near the ballpark is a fool's game. Called them early one Saturday night for a pickup. Spent the usual 10-15 minutes on hold trying to get through. Normally they show up after 10 mins, but when they weren't there after 15, I went outside for a look around, and to call them. Nothing in sight, no call and of course, couldn't get through when i called. Still on hold trying to get through to Veteran's, i assumed they ditched me and i picked up another cab on the street. After 10 minutes of being on hold trying to cancel the cab, I gave up. 5 minutes later (this being 45 minutes after initiating the first call, and 30 minutes after actually speaking to a person), i get a call from them saying my cab was outside. "i've already left" i replied, and the guy at the other end of the phone says "next time, call Yellow, because we're never picking you up again" and before i had time to explain, he hung up. Got in a Vetaran's cab yesterday and nicely asked the driver to take me to Bush and Divis. (not a long haul from where I was, but I had to get there quickly). He was very nice at first, but then I noticed that the meter was not running. When I kindly asked the gentleman to start the meter, he paused, laughed and told me that it was no problem and that I could just "guess" the fare. After playing along for a second, I realized that he was trying to overcharge me and screw his company out of money so I insisted that he start the meter. After my last attempt, he whipped over lanes of traffic to the side of the road and tells me to "get out". I almost started laughing because it was so reminiscent of the scene in The Big Lebowski when "The Dude" insults a cab driver's choice of playing The Eagles while driving. I exited the cab, slammed the door, and he sped of. If Veteran's Cab is hiring guys like this, I want absolutely nothing to do with them. In the future, I'll wait for a Luxor or Yellow Cab. read more

Veterans / National is my go-to taxi company. I don't own a car in the city so when I just need a quick ride, I call Veterans. My first great experience with them was upon finding myself stranded way out in Crissie Field. After waiting over an hour for the yellow cab I'd called, I gave up & tried Veterans with a completely different experience. The dispatcher was totally honest with me explaining that drivers wouldn't want to make the slow trip all the way to the back, but if I walked part way to meet them, he'd have a driver meet me. I was home in half an hour. Since then, I use them weekly to get myself to a dance class and call them for nearly every taxi need. I let them know if I need to cancel a pick-up I've set up and they now know me by name. read more

I have been calling Veteran's cab for over 10 years and believe it is worth it to be loyal to one cab company. A friend recommended them to me after I got burned waiting for a yellow cab that never showed up. Ever since, I have always been able to get through, and more importantly, they will call you when the cab is rolling up so you don't have to wait outside. The dispatcher's know I call often and really try to get a cab out to me fast. If it takes awhile, I'll call back and they will get the driver on the phone for an update while I'm on the line. They have always been cordial and efficient which I really appreciate. I feel that is awesome customer service that stands apart from the competition. read more

All cab companies suck. Once I accepted this, I loved Veteran's Cab for years but have had a lot of problems lately with their drivers. I would have given them 5 stars for 6 years of screwing me over less than all the other cab companies but the last driver was such a jerk that I will never use them again. I won't go in to the details but among other things, when I schedule a pick-up in advance to catch a plane or train for example, I expect the cab to pick me up on time. Let me say that Veteran's Cab screwed me over way less than other cab companies and it was always the driver. Is it the company's fault that their contract drivers are jerks? You decide. The thing I really liked about Veteran's is the fact that when you called and requested a cab, the dispatcher or driver would actually call you as the cab was pulling up and only four times in 6 years did a cab fail to appear after calling. I don't drive so I take a lot of cabs. In fact I took about 30 cab rides in March alone. Anyway, for what it's worth, they are, in my opinion, one of the lesser evils of SF cab companies but I won't take them again. read more

I'm writing this under both National and Veteran's Cab company as I got the impression they are the same company now. From Pac Heights down to SOMA, I happened to flag down Juan, who was the most polite, delightful cab driver ever. It usually feels forced to have to carry on conversation, but with this guy he was genuinely conversational and interested in what I had to say, AND he was appreciative of my $2 tip on a credit card (I have been yelled at for being "cheap" by other cab drivers for the same amount on a shorter ride!) UPDATE on 2/13/2013: Managed to reserve a 5am cab to the airport for my friend and I last Thanksgiving (they were accommodating and gave us the big van to haul my snowboard bag) and the cab arrived on time, no issues. Roughly a $52 ride from SOMA to SFO (incl. tip). This is my go-to cab company in SF fasho. read more

If I'm going to call a cab, I'm calling Veteran's. They've always been prompt in picking me up for scheduled calls, and the drivers have always been nice. On occasion- my girlfriend's birthday, for example- I've made special requests of them (drive her to location X, but don't tell her) and they helped me out. To the people out there with big expectations... Getting a cab is like getting a bartender's attention: If you're trying to do it late on a Friday night you can't expect much response. Just be patient. And complaining like an asshole will get you nowhere. read more

For some reason, when I'm in need of a cab, I call yellow cab first. They take forevs to answer, or don't bother showing up at all even when the call with the message that they are outside my door. Veteran's Cab left me (a veteran) stranded on Memorial Day. When I called them, the dispatcher told me that he would have a cab to me in 20 minutes. After 30 minutes they called and told me that they couldn't make it out my way and the dispatcher was changing shifts so he has to close out all of his calls. On September 7th we were visiting SFMoma, and were waiting outside SFMoma for an Uber we had booked. National cab pulls up in front of us, the driver gets out. Starts yelling at me aggressively, wanting to know why we're waiting for Uber, instead of using taxi service. Now, I'm happy to engage in that conversation, in a civil way, but not by being yelled at by a stranger on a sidewalk at night. (For the record, after numerous terrible experiences in San Francisco taxi cabs, I switched to Uber. I'm perfectly happy to consider supporting local cab companies, but they need to offer the same level of service at the very least, which they currently do not.) The driver was threatening, very angry and aggressive, and appeared to be quite unhinged. His behavior and anger was abnormal under the circumstances, hurling invective at us across the sidewalk. I contacted National/Veterans cab via their website the day after this happened, to let them know about this incident, and address it outside of public reviews. I sent them the license plate and number of the cab in question so they could address the incident with the driver, as I thought they would want to do that. They have never offered the courtesy of a response, nor an acknowledgement that they received my message. If I owned or managed a taxi company, I'd want to deal with the driver in question. But their non response leaves me to conclude they they simply do not care. Which brings me full circle to why I no longer use local taxis , and why these companies are doomed in the face of competition. They should stop blaming ride services like Uber for their demise, and look to their own service and drivers. read more

I cant speak highly enough about Veterans Cab, on Saturday i left my passport and a substantial amount of cash in a bag in one of their cars and within one hour the driver had been located, he found the bag and brought it back to the hotel. There was no attempt to exploit the situation and Emmanuel was nothing but polite courteous and professional. Equally helpful was the call controller who did everything he could to trace the driver and left me a message - thanks to him as well read more

We called for a cab for a specific time 1 1/2 hours in advance. They gave us a 15 minute window either way for our preferred time. When the cab never showed we called and were told that there was not a cab in our area. We told the dispatch we wanted to stay on the line until he could find one and he hung up on us. We were located in Glen Park right off the 280. Really...we did not ask to be picked up on the planet MARS. I suggest if you use this cab company you tell them you need to be picked up for an airport fare. When they arrive, get in and then tell the driver your flight was cancelled and give the address of another location. VETERAN'S: Focus on customer service. Their cab #k1223 (lic 78549f2) is speeding up Portola, weaving in and out of traffic, and almost hit at least three cars in a span of five min. In this rideshare dominant climate, it seems especially unwise to drive so dangerously (and not pick up your phones). read more

Yo these guys are good! Much better than other city cab competition in terms of on time arrival and rate of "actually showing up". I call them for myself and I call them for my customers at my bartending job. I don't mess with several of the larger cab firms in the city, ever, due to being burned too many times with trying to get a late night pickup and getting stuck. I stick with National/Veterans! As we all know, finding a cab in SF can be a nightmare. However, the Veteran's/National dispatchers are truly awesome. They are humorous, friendly, and they remember and build relationships with frequent customers. I'll often call, ask for a cab, and get a lighthearted "only if this is Chris at Harrison Street!" - which just feels good! It's like good old-fashioned customer service where you treat people with respect - imagine that! They are also good at managing expectations when things are crazy busy (like it's 11pm on a Friday with Outside Lands going on...okay I get it, it's gonna be tough to get a cab in the next 10 minutes!). Also important, I have never had them NOT send a cab when they say they will, unlike some of the companies with automated systems where you press 1 and then just never hear back. I wish I could give these criminals a lower rating than one star. I took a cab from San Francisco international airport to south San Jose fully expecting to pay in the vicinity of $100. When I reached my destination, the meter read $132. Ok, slightly more than what I expected but not entirely reasonable. The driver then tells me that because he had to drive me more than 15 miles outside of San Francisco city limits, he has to charge me 150% of the meter fair!!!!! So my cab ride cost me upwards of $200!!! Furthermore, the cabbie has the audacity to demand a tip since he did a fine job driving the cab!! But let's not mention that he failed to mention that little tidbit about 150% surcharge!!! DO NOT EVER USE THIS CAB COMPANY!!!! read more

what is it with cab drivers of late, i've rarely had a bad experience with cab drivers in the city, but last night i hailed a cab on geary to go to 7th and mission and the cab driver tried to take me for a ride. not that kind of ride, but the wrong way kind of ride. FAIL!!! read more

These guys nearly killed me recently. I had called the night before to ask for a cab at 6 a.m. At 5 a.m. the cabbie calls me to make sure I don't inconvenience him when he gets there. Strike 1. He calls again at 5:30, and at 6 when he arrives. Kind of incredible. I get in the cab. The alignment of the cab is whacked-out, so that whenever he makes a turn, the cab shudders for a moment, then the rear axle seems to snap into place. Strike 2. It's raining and 6 a.m. and I have a plane to catch, or I would have gotten out of the cab and hailed another one. Going about 70 miles an hour on Route 880, headed for Oakland airport, the rear of the cab does its loose axle dance again, and the back slides out to the left, sending the cab into a high-speed drift. The cabbie oversteers in the opposite direction, snapping the cab into a 540-degree counterclockwise spin, and smashes into the retaining wall on the left of the freeway. Strike 3. Luckily, the cab didn't flip over or get tagged by another car, and I braced myself before we hit the wall. An awesome Samurai samaritan in a Fast and Furious ride who saw the wreck pulled up and offered to give me a lift to the airport. The one star above is for the cab that got there just as the Samurai Samaritan was about to jet. I took the cab, only because I didn't want to inconvenience the SS and also really needed to make that plane. No follow-up call from the cab company. Wear a helmet. UPDATE: I received a call from the company's claims settlement people. Hmm. I wonder what they want? read more

Hey assholes - pick up the phone. You were supposed to pick me up 30 min ago...

One of their drivers was driving at least 85 mph and weaving in and out of traffic. He almost hit my car by swerving into my lane. I called the company to report it & the guy hangs up on me. Horrible driving & customer service. read more
