More than just blood banking, the American Red Cross is about saving lives and empowering people to help those in need. They provide emergency assistance and disaster relief as well as education in the United States. (There is also the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement that is a global humanitarian network.) Approximately 90% of every dollar that is donated goes directly to program services, so a massive portion of donations is used to help those in need. And if you can't donate money, donating blood is pretty awesome too. Look out for the Big Red Bus in your neighborhood! As I have O+ positive blood, mine is particularly helpful! I get that they are well rated as a charity (when graded on a curve it seems). If I lose Yelp friends over this, then be it. I don't know that most people read my reviews anyway lol. I don't understand how TRC can charge for the CPR courses. They are basically discriminating against anyone who can't afford them. For some people working in certain fields, they are free. For others who need to learn it like low paid caregivers, they have to pay their own way. This is how I found out they won't budge on the CPR classes, my caregiver friend told me how expensive it was. These classes should be an entitlement. Yes, you heard me. Learning CPR is something we do not for ourselves, but for OTHER people. It does not benefit us, but others' lives we try to save. Imagine all the people who die everyday of cardiac arrest, heart attacks etc...who could have been saved had there been 1 person around them trained to save them.  Yes, I get that those teaching the courses have to get paid. But that money is already coming from their community donations (us), blood sales (thanks to blood donators), federal and state agency donations (thanks to us tax payers), and their many corporate donations (thanks to us buying goods and services at inflated prices so that these companies can donate for optics and writing it off). They also save by using a lot of free labor from volunteers. At least they can offer reduced fees or free for those who are poor. At least they can offer free classes for those who give blood. I mean, they don't give back outside of disasters, and is it even enough? It's the principle of the matter, not just the high cost. It's $126 for the needed course per online prices, over the phone they quoted something higher whe we asked for a discount. Their response was they needed the money to help victims in disasters. So the poor who can barely survive need to help other poor people? Unfortunately, that is how it works, but it is not right. The executives at this non profit are paid handsomely, not like say, for profit healthcare, but still way more than expected, please see link below. There were 42 of us all volunteering to create and pack boxes of assorted canned/packaged food for 1.5 hours, followed by a tour of the facility. The place is HUGE and feeds 1 million people annually and some 60 million meals. While I didn't stick around for the tour, I will volunteer again. It was a phenomenal and rewarding experience knowing we were preparing food to feed the food-insecure throughout the DMV.

Fast forward to today, Capital Area Food Bank feeds 60 million meals a year through direct distribution and non-profit partners. They are like the Costco of food banks where non-profits like Martha's Table get their meals to hand out locally. If you're looking for volunteer opportunities, Capital Area Food Bank hosts two groups a day Tuesday through Saturday to help organize food donated at their distribution center. It's a massive warehouse with heavy equipment so you have to be 12 and older to volunteer. Once inside and trained, you'll notice inspiring murals and art inside walking guests through the work. Outside is a working garden with an outdoor kitchen with a pizza oven to help teach youth about nutrition. Capital Area Food Bank is making an impact on the D.C. area!

Our class wanted to organize a clothing/food drive, and Martha's Table seemed to have the most bang for your buck. You can always donate in liquid like every other organization, but not as feasible for someone on the student lifestyle. There's plenty of drop-off locations for clothing and baby items across the city. If you can give food items like canned and dried goods, you gotta go to their Maycroft location on Columbia Rd NW. Easy to just reserve a 15-minute appointment on their website and drop off our load. I see their trucks all around the city serving the community - here's to hoping everyone's littles go a long way.
