We visited Vero Gelato in Ipanema after lunch for a sweet treat and way to cool down in the (winter?) heat in Rio. Known for their avocado gelato, their assortment is filled with both local fruits and flavors. You have the option of selecting two or three types of gelatos in a medium sized cup, so we opted for three flavors choice. My husband had avocado, coconut, and streudel as his flavors. I went with Brazilian chocolate, hazelnut, and salted caramel with sea salt. We loved every bite and it was a fabulous find. Having won a number of awards for their gelato, I definitely think this is a must-eat place if you're in Ipanema. ps. if you try to find this place on Google Maps, it'll take you to the wrong spot. Check their address on their Facebook page instead!

These days I sample a bit of gelato in just about every city I visit, and I had high expectations for the beach-centric and multicultural hub that is Rio. Vero Gelato came up as being some of the best, and while it was good, it didn't blow me away. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? A small shop in a trendy part of town, the layout at Vero is familiar, with a big glass case displaying what must be 24 or so flavors and three sizes. Of note here is that English is spoken by the staff, which is appreciated. Star Granted. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? R$ 9,00 for a medium (two flavors) was a bargain here given that equates to only $2.50, so the value is significantly better than the other gelato spots I frequented while in Brazil. Star Granted. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? It's here that things fell a bit short. I opted for a standard Chocolate and Caramel duo, which is my gold standard for evaluating gelato, and while good in consistency, both lacked the pungent flavor that really differentiates gelato from standard ice cream. I can't quite put a finger on what the culprit was, but it just didn't blow me away. Single Star Granted. All in all, Single Star Granted. Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could? Having had better gelato and ice cream in Brazil (in the Sao Paulo airport no less), I can't quite say that Vero made my elite list of gelato spots in the country. No Star Granted.

Great open kitchen. The filet mignon and stuffed potatoes were enjoyable. The shrimp with corn…read morerisotto was also tasty. The seating arrangement is less than ideal as I was elbowed a few times during dinner. I have never had calamari with pesto, but it too was delicious. The textures were interesting. We did not enjoy the spicy ceviche. There was something off about the dish. Don't miss out on their Brigadeiro.

Never really considered going here until we were partying at the arena bloco and needed a place to…read moreeat. We decided to beat the crowds and eat a little earlier (noon). They had strict control over the gate and only allowed people who were ordering food to come in. They were also really restrictive of the bathroom (one must have a table), which for ladies was through the kitchen into the inside fancier air conditioned dining area. We easily got a table for four and ordered two pizzas: Córdoba in medium (6 slices) and pepperoni in small (4 fat slices). The first one was actually pretty decent with onion, ham and tons of mozzarella but I did find a hair in it, which was a little gross. The pepperoni was great but edible. This place is good for drinking; so like a night out or a carnaval bloco is perfect. The greasy food eases the processing of the alcohol. Alcohol was chopp of Stella and very limited other beverages (refridgerantes). They had some hard alcohol but wasn't listed on the menu, so you'll just have to ask. The set up for the blocos was perfect. They had gates to keep all the drunk mess out and the tables were perfect people watching and admiring all the terrific costumes for carnaval.
