These days I sample a bit of gelato in just about every city I visit, and I had high expectations for the beach-centric and multicultural hub that is Rio. Vero Gelato came up as being some of the best, and while it was good, it didn't blow me away.
Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere?
A small shop in a trendy part of town, the layout at Vero is familiar, with a big glass case displaying what must be 24 or so flavors and three sizes. Of note here is that English is spoken by the staff, which is appreciated. Star Granted.
Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost?
R$ 9,00 for a medium (two flavors) was a bargain here given that equates to only $2.50, so the value is significantly better than the other gelato spots I frequented while in Brazil. Star Granted.
Stars 3 and 4: How was the food?
It's here that things fell a bit short. I opted for a standard Chocolate and Caramel duo, which is my gold standard for evaluating gelato, and while good in consistency, both lacked the pungent flavor that really differentiates gelato from standard ice cream. I can't quite put a finger on what the culprit was, but it just didn't blow me away. Single Star Granted.
All in all, Single Star Granted.
Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could?
Having had better gelato and ice cream in Brazil (in the Sao Paulo airport no less), I can't quite say that Vero made my elite list of gelato spots in the country. No Star Granted. read more
