Shelburne, VT - I didn't come here with high expectations, thinking it would just be a supersized teddy bear store and a fun kiddy activity, but this actually turned out to be one of my favorite places we visited in Vermont. Yes, there is a giant store full of their own branded teddy bears and other stuffed animals, but I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the sweet factory tour. It's only $5 for adults and is free for kids, and lasts about 20 minutes. You get to see every step of the teddy bear making process - I don't know how I thought stuffed animals were made but turns out it's still a largely handcrafted process, which is quite poignant in this age of mechanized mass production. Along the way you are shown special edition bears and stuffies, prototypes being considered for future release, and the bear hospital. The VT Teddy Bear Co provides a lifetime guarantee on their products, and some of the bears awaiting treatment at the hospital looked like they've suffered massively unfortunate fates at the hands of serial killers or arsonists. Yet the hospital will take them in and fix them! Or send you a close replacement if the bear is beyond repair or the exact one isn't available anymore. I didn't come with the intention of buying anything at all (preferring vintage-style bears myself) but the bear workshop was too cute to pass up, there was no line/crowd (it was a weekday during the school year), and this seemed like a memorable souvenir for our kid for this trip. This is such a fun spot to bring your kids. There's make your own teddy, a gift shop with variety of teddy bears and merchandise and you also get a factory tour for only $5 per adult, kids are free. We went few minutes after opening and it was already pretty busy. We bought tickets for factory tour that was scheduled at 11am. While waiting we went around the gift shop. My daughter went to the bear workshop and built her own teddy bear called "Fluffy". The associate was super friendly and patient. Assisted her in every step. It was $26.99 for the bear, which I believe was a decent price. The factory tour is really informative and fun. Got to learn the origin of VTB, their move the current factory, the bear design and making process, as well as fixing the bears that got damaged. They provide lifetime warranty on their bears. There had special edition bears, prototype bears and collectible bears. The hospital section was so cool. Our narrator was superb, explained everything so well with lots of facts and humor. I stopped here to bring my sister's "sick" teddy bear to the bear hospital. We made it an hour before closing. I filled in an intake form and handed the poor sick little bear over. I feel better knowing he is in professional hands. While I was there I took the tour. It is a quick simple little tour for $5. I didn't have intentions on taking the tour, not because I didn't want to, but because I was on a schedule. Then I went over to the Teddy Shop and was amazed by the amount and variation of the bears. I immediately sought out the manatee and snatched it off the stand. I ordered a New Baby Teddybear which arrived in their cute packaging box, which they used as the shipping box so it was beat up and had the shipping label on it and couldn't be used to present the gift. I called to ask if they could kindly send me a new box and was rudely laughed at and told if I want to buy a box I could. They are charging high end prices without providing a high-end service. We went here around July of last year. If you are a kid, you will have lots of fun here since you are naive and anything that looks cute, you will want your parents to buy. If you are an adult, teddy bears with moving arms and legs sounds kind of creepy. This teddy bear factory has lots of variety in selection, build your own bear, and factory tour. Factory tour apparently doesn't operate on weekends since you will see just machines and not people actually making teddy bears at their desks. If you have little kids definitely a 4 stars. For 5 dollars you could take a tour of the factory and warehouse. I could see enough through the window that it was staged for little kids. A big sign hung that said sewing area and you could see 1 or 2 people sewing animals. I'm sure they had the stuffing section too. Since time was a premium for my wife and I we decided to skip the 30 minute tour. You could design and make an animal like build a bear. They had other animals besides teddy bears. We bought a pair of Vermont Mittens for my adult daughter. They were cool; modeled by Bernie Sanders. The main site was the gift shop. You could buy a $75 teddy bear with $20 going to a social cause or spend around $55 for a regular teddy bear (no special tag). All the parents and little kids were carrying boxes of teddy bears. Very cute. The tour was very informative and the girl who was running it was great with her speaking and keeping our daughter's interest. We learned a lot and of course had to build her own bear after. It is pricey ($75) but worth it. After learning how they are made, for her to go through a shortened route to make one was amazing. If you're a fan of all things fluffy, this is a wonderful tour! It's really cool to see the factory in action and get a behind the scenes of how much of it is really still hand made. The bear hospital where they repair damaged bears was especially cute (in particular, the bear in a hospital gown hooked up to a honey IV), and it was fun to learn about the history of the company and see the first teddy bear that the founder made for his children. So disappointed. I had to TRY to find a bear made in Vermont, it says made in USA or made somewhere else. The bear was small for the money and it came in a box filthy from shipping with an 'air hole' which is a cute idea but allowed the filth from shipping to get inside and the bear was not even protected in a plastic bag or any wrapping, just loose in the filthy box with a hole in it. Gross. Now I have to go and buy a box, but a gift box with branding would have been nice, one that was not filthy dirty. I would not purchase another bear. read more

This company is a complete scam. I would give it zero stars if possible. I looked at the return policy for the company before ordering. If there was something wrong I could return or exchange within 30 days. I ordered a 6' bear. The bear looks nothing like the picture. It's head does not stay up. The head fall down to the belly bottom and all you can see the the back of the bear's head. The fur on the bear also keeps coming off. Just very poor quality! I called the company to explain this to them and I was told that this happens with the large stuffed bears so it is not a defect and that if I wanted to return it I would have to pay for shipping, and that their return labels were only for the smaller bears. This was not stated in their return policy. The return policy stated returns within 30 days and $9.95 would be debited from the return credit amount. Not the VTB I grew up with. Quality has gone way down while the prices have gone up, and the customer service is the worst. Placed an order for 2 limited edition bears. Keep in mind that these bears go for around $100 each. One looked NOTHING like the photo online and the other had crooked eyes and one arm longer than the other. I sent them back for a refund after speaking with a supervisor who provided me the return label, and without any notice, they deducted a return fee from my refund. I called to try and rectify the situation thinking surely they made a mistake but nope. They refused to absorb the cost of the return shipping label even though the items were returned due to quality issues which were obvious, and indicated on the return form. They claimed the supervisor didn't make any type of note about covering the shipping even though she provided me with the exact amount I was going to be refunded, and that amount didn't include a deduction for shipping. I could've shipped it myself for less and not have had to wait for their snail mail return delivery service (which only delivers to them once a week). I've put up with the declining quality the last few years as Vermont Teddy Bears have always held a special place in my heart, but this was the last straw. Buyer beware and take your hard earned money elsewhere. 30 plus year loyal customers apparently mean nothing to this company. read more
