I loved this comic store while visiting Richmond! Small store but has a lot of stuff, which I was pleasantly surprised with. They have a good amount of new issues, as well as older ones. They have a huge collection of older issues, including ones labeled from the Silver Age, which I appreciated. Most of them are organized, but some of them are kind of all over the place timeline wise, but still fun to go through. They had quite a diversity of TP and compendiums which was great! This shop has one of the biggest collection of issues I have seen in most comic book stores, so much so it's sometimes difficult to navigate what exactly you are looking for. I enjoy coming to this place as it feels almost more catered to the collector by having multiple cover variants in stock and occasionally accessories like posters and pins. Velocity Comics is an alternative comics landmark. PROS: The standout element of Velocity is their local, small press, and indie section. If you're an adventurous comics reader who is looking for something with a unique voice that you can't find elsewhere, this is the spot. They have all the traditional goods as well, of course, and can recommend great stuff for any sort of reader. CONS: Very small store. But like Local Heroes in Norfolk, they are a hip, modern store that has made the best use of their limited space. VERDICT: Their proximity to the arts college brings excellent local talent to their inventory as well as unique taste in their clientele. This is a comic shop primarily for the alternative crowd, but still does a great job catering to kids and the mainstream superhero fans. Don't skip this one. Unless you're a poser. read more

These guys were awesome!! Went up to Richmond this weekend and wanted to stop in because I heard great things and wanted to surprise a comic book fan so I had to come correct. Me not know a thing about comics didn't help. So I went on yelp to see where my fellow yelpers thought I should go. They didn't lead me astray. This place was great! Not only did they have all of the comics she wanted but it was neat, and the person at the register was awesome. He helps her find things and even taught me some things too lol. What I love about Velocity is their dedication to non-superhero stuff - lots of manga, graphic novels and stories and as mild a superhero presence as you'll see in a comic book store. What I didn't love was the way back issues packed the store, there were unmarked boxes everywhere with no mention of pricing and no hint on pricing methodology. An awesome local comic book store. I've been to Velocity Comics only a few times but each time I've found what I was looking for. They've got pretty much everything new in Marvel and DC, and even fluffy stuff (stuff that I really enjoy) like Bee and PuppyCat, Adventure Time, and Steven Universe. There's also a small manga section in the back. It's currently finals week at VCU so I was studying in the library when I realized that I had almost forgotten about Free Comic Book Day. Needless to say, I left the library and hauled ass to Velocity. There was a selection of free comics that are specially created for Free Comic Book Day so to me they aren't like "real" comics, but they're a novelty and cost nothing so of course I picked up a few. There was a limit of three free comics per customer - fair enough. Aside from the selection of free comics, the entire store was 20% off. Definitely worth the study break! The store is well organized and employees are very helpful and knowledgeable. Will be picking up my monthly copy of Gwenpool here for the foreseeable future! read more

One of the things I like to do when I am visiting from out of town is to check out comic books stores. I must say Velocity Comics makes me wish I lived in Richmond. The prices are extremely fair and they have a nice collection of back issues for digging. They all were very nice and willing to help me if I had any questions. When I was there I found a couple of comics on my want list and paid with a credit card. I unfortunately forgot to put my credit card back in my wallet. Also unfortunately I left there and went straight for the airport back home. I called Velocity and they said they would be happy to mail me my credit card for no charge. Thank you all again and I plan to visit again when I am back in Richmond. read more

This place is packed full of treasure and the owner and staff are knowledgeable and eager to help. Lots of great comics old and new, lots of great independent publications and zines, lots of books for kids, and lots of collected editions. Velocity Comics is, hands down, the best place to purchase comic books in the Richmond area. The staff is knowledgeable, but not pushy. The store is setup such that books are accessable and easy to browse. You receive a 10% discount on anything you purchase as long as you have at least 1 subscription. Adding and dropping titles is a breeze. Located near VCU, access is easy and I usually find parking right in front of the shop. I spent a year shopping around the greater Richmond area before I decided on Velocity, despite it being the greatest distance from my home. read more

As I said in a previous review, the ecosystem in Richmond is such that the two most rich and vibrant nerdy enclaves have a hard distinction between gaming and comics. One Eyed Jacques is the exclusively gaming store on Cary town that rules the roost when it comes to table top. And although they are not formally linked in anyway to my knowledge, I think of Velocity Comics as the sister store to OEJ as they are Richmond's premier leader in comics. With that preamble out of the way, Velocity has a relatively smallish space, but their dedication to just comics and the overall organization of the store give Velocity what I think is the best selection in town. The staff stands out as super friendly and knowledgeable even in a field where that sort of think par for the course. Also the selection of Indy/Small Press/Local, comics here is AMAZING!! Truly marvelous. Easy street parking. Knowledgeable and friendly staff. Ladies, we all know that a trip to a comic book store can be a crap shoot. Often, the stores only carry comics that, at best, objectify women. This store makes a clear effort to carry graphic novels written by women, or that have women as real characters (not just in bikinis). A marvelous selection. I much prefer this place to the shops I had frequented in Manhattan. I'm already excited to go back! read more

In town for a conference and had some time to kill so I decided to take a short walk down Broad to check out the comic book shop. Very clean and very organized. The gentleman that was behind the counter was enthusiastic and very helpful and accommodating for the fact that I am deaf. I collect really off the wall stuff so usually comic book shops have a hard time with the titles I look for, but Velocity had a whole slew of back issues of some of the titles I wanted. Here's the kicker...they directed me to another comic book shop who they said would most likely have some of what I was looking for. I absolutely love that. It's refreshing to see shops work together to support one another and our shared addiction...errrr I mean hobby. I will be coming back for sure next time I am in town (and with more hobby money in the budget!) read more

I am one of those people that constantly research places to visit in new towns, but Velocity was a happy little accident. I walked past their store front and thought I should stop in, but kept on walking down to street to another shop. Then I came back past it and decided to stop in for just a second. The store was so welcoming and well laid out that I just got sucked in and had to look at everything on the shelves. Full disclosure: I had never purchased a hard copy of a comic and really haven't read many comics at all. I walked out of the store thinking about how I may like to get more into it and shops like this make it so alluring. I got maybe a block before I turned around, walked right back in, and bought two I regret not catching the name of the person manning the store that day, but he was super grateful for the business and made me excited to come back next time I'm in town. read more

Velocity comics has the benefit of being close to the fan/VCU campus for easy access. The staff is always friendly and one of the owners, Pat, is particularly great with customer service and generally just being awesome. They offer most, if not all, of the more popular series, as well as many independent titles and local publishers. Velocity also offers a wide selection of trade paperbacks, graphic novels, and has a selection for children. In addition to the comics, they also offer a small selection of collectibles. As a regular customer, I have been fortunate to request special order items and Velocity has been as accommodating as possible with my requests. Overall, the shop is great. By far the least stuffy comic book store in the world. These guys are always willing to show you something new Or even get you into the hobby to begin with. If they don't have it there is a good chance Patrick can find it. I was accepted with open arms 10 years ago when I moved to Richmond; if you have ever been to a comic book store you know that is a near mint rarity. Checked this place out while visiting from NJ. Easily accessible location on the VCU campus. Great variety of mainstream, indie & small press comics and manga. Along with a healthy stock of new books, there is a ton of back issues and trades crammed into the space. Music is good too, they were playing the new Band of Horses when I was there. Prices are good to great. They had a 1/2 off all manga sale; I snagged 14 volumes of Lone Wolf & Cub for under $70! read more

Fantastic comic book shop. Laid out very well, and everything's organized perfectly (something that SHOULD apply to all stores, but many of clothe comic shops I've been to have looks like homes for hoarders). Back wall has this week's newest issues, the wall on the right has Marvel/DC as well as Image/Dark Horse/Vertigo/etc, and the left wall has a great selection of indie/local/lesser-known titles. Action figures and rare comics line the walls above the shelves, and there are more comics on every side of a long island that sits in the middle of the store. Also, they have awesome staff members who are always able to help out with reviews, advice, recommendations, etc. They communicate well via email and social media regarding sales, new stock, info on particularly popular pulls (tongue twister), and specific details about your box. Conveniently located on Broad by VCU with plenty of (metered) street parking. I try to stop by almost once a week. read more

I've been shopping at Velocity since I moved to Richmond in 2003 and I've never received anything but stellar service and an amazing selection. Chances are, they have what you're looking for, but if they don't they always manage to track it down pretty fast. There's a deep selection of mini-comics and self-published stuff, along with an unrivaled selection of indie comics. Toys, but not TOO many. Lots of stuff on sale/clearance, which is a fun way to take a cheap flier on something new. They're so used to and savvy at serving female comics fans that you almost forget what a problem that is at maybe 75% of other shops. Maybe most importantly these days, they're super-patient with my horribly unruly children, and always have a lot of cool books for them to check out at EVERY price point. read more

However, that doesn't change my opinion that this is the best comic shop in Virginia in regards to diversity and selection. Very knowledgeable staff that will help you find what you need/want.
