I give it 5 stars, and that is a big deal coming from someone as know it all Been there, done that- picky cheapskate as me. First, it is so nice to have an all vegan supermarket, as sometimes no matter how careful you are, there are the times when we buy things that have some sort of animal product in it that we were not aware of at the store (I have been vegan for 18 years and this has happened to me from time to time); besides, I'd much rather give my money to somewhere where they share my core principles and an increased conscience, and I don't have to walk around dead carcasses to pick out my food. I come from New York City and there are a a lot of vegans and vegan restaurants there; but in 2012, there is still no vegan store. There are two vegetarian stores, one is a food cooperative (the 4th Street Food Co-Op) and the other store belongs to a yoga center (Integral Yoga Natural Foods) and that's it. I remember Veni Vidi Vegi in Kreuzberg and I thought that was nice, though it was small. Veganz is a very nice sized store with a good sized selection of different foods and personal care items. There is a small section of supplements and an awful lot of snack foods and chocolate. There is the nicest selection of vegan ice cream that I've ever seen in Berlin. I did not check the prices of the produce because I get that at the farmers markets, but nice to have it there in the store just in case. Overall, prices on personal care items, ice creams, grains, beans, condiments, chocolates/snacks, makeup, beverages, wheat gluten, soya bits and supplements seemed comparable with prices I've seen in biomarkte around Berlin, and I don't have to read through every ingredients list to check if it's vegan. I don't suffer from food allergies, yet I am conscious about the environment and like the fact that many of the wheat and soy items are responsibly sourced. There is a good selection of superfoods in the front, but I did not look at the prices. There are also many brands that I am familiar with and that
I can trust (as far as personal care and beauty) and this store caries many of them such as Aubrey, Beauty Without Cruelty, etc. They also carry Tempt and So Delicious ice creams which is great and they are not so outrageously priced, especially considering that they are American brands. I assume the bakery must be very good as it seems as though it's usually busy. To top it all off, they are right next to an all vegan shoe store with a good selection of stylish shoes (unlike some places that carry only frumpy lacklustre styles of vegan shoes). Staff there seem as friendly as anyplace else. read more
