Most disgusting experience. Worse ER in the Richmond Va area. No communications and the Dr's must have forgotten their Hippocratic oath.

She received too much IV Lasix by day-3 and was weak, shaky, and severely dehydrated. Nurses were instructed by the cardiologist to give all her meds before her Cardioversion and she didn't receive any (including her blood thinner). Also, when one of her blood thinner pills fell to the floor, the male nurse told her she could skip it for the day. She was left alone in her room at the end of the hall with the door closed tightly when she became disoriented, agitated, and confused. One morning, her 9am pills were still sitting on her table at 12:30pm bc the nurse didn't make sure she took them (when she was confused). When the "nurse" was confronted about her untaken meds and the door being closed, she put her hand in my face and walked away stating she was "going to give me a minute". She had to use the call button repeatedly to ask for help reaching her food tray, only to be ignored, and finally received help when the hospitalist came in her room. She did not receive any hygiene or oral care unless I asked for clean sheets, washcloths, and towels, and then I did the care for her - not the employees. Apparently, hygiene and oral care is no longer a routine part of nursing care and patients can go days without it, unless they have an advocate to facilitate it. Every day she was a patient at HDH she became weaker and had more issues. Finally, there was a huge cockroach in her bathroom that I smashed with my shoe. The nurse manager argued that it was a water bug...it was NOT. This is actually the second time I've seen a cockroach in this hospital. I have vowed to never return to this God-awful facility and have asked my family (and you) to go somewhere else if they want to live. For a previous ER Visit for my 92 year old mother with CHF and shortness of breath (on 12/16/25), the ER physician told us that "her case really isn't an emergency because the ER is for traumas, gun shot wounds, and heart attacks", but he proceeded to give her IV Lasix and admit her for CHF. Ugh...really? His personality was not suited for emergency medicine.

After folks checked in, they were called back for blood pressure and other basic things and sent back to the waiting area. To me, this meant a way to ensure there was not an urgent underlying issue that may not be part of the reason that peeps checked in for - and to expedite when a room was assigned. The blonde at the reception desk may have been the same as our prior visit... no matter, she was moving and shaking - facilitating moving people around as needed to make us feel like things were progressing. It really helps to see movement of any kind when you are waiting. IMO. We had another good experience. They were very busy, but things moved along. The nurse and doc were great, as was the CAT scan tech. Again, our doctor spent time with us. Given how busy it was, he could have said "X" and follow up with "X". He did not, we had a discussion. We left with good advice and a disc of our scan. Another good visit.

I handed the paper to the front desk, and I explained the exact message from my doctor to at least three nurses. Then I explained it again to a doctor, and after keeping me there for an hour and a half, charging me for a full emergency room visit, they informed me that those tests are not something that they are capable of running at that facility. So they would need to transfer me to a hospital and check me in. Then they discharged me "Against Medical Advice" because I wasn't interested in them transferring me immediately to a hospital to become an inpatient there. They found absolutely nothing on my exam that would warrant transferring me to a hospital immediately. They only had my note from my ophthalmologist saying that he wanted these two tests to be run and that I should go to an ER and request those two tests. Why didn't they tell me that, when I walked in the front door with my Dr note on official letterhead, telling exactly which tests my ophthalmologist wanted them to run? Why did they waste my time and charge me for an emergency room visit when they could have told me immediately, at the front desk, that they cannot do those tests and that I should just go to the regular Dr instead? What a ridiculous way to respond to a request they already knew they were not equipped to fulfill. I walked in unassisted, clearly not in any emergency condition, simply because of the ophthalmologist' poor understanding of what the ER offers.

Speaking of countless, my story is only one of countless others. My story: Recently, my oldest sister (previously a nurse) and last sibling of four, suffered a massive stroke in the right hemisphere of her brain. Flown in a Life Star from a remote location eighty miles away as the Star flies to VCU. Immediately emitted to the Critical Care Center ICU. She eventually, gained from movement on her right side and very limited communication in about a week. Thou her prognosis wasn't positive, the medical care team kept hope and provided time for loved ones to visit and make peace. My daughter (also a nurse) and I were able to visit. The medical staff made sure every visitor were comfortable, informed, and able to spend as much time as needed to be with her. After about two weeks in the facility, my sister's final wish was to be home with loved ones; all with the mutual agreement with her husband and the immediate family. The Palliative Care Team assisted everyone discussing options and planning the next steps together. The Team was available as needed to answer and questions or concerns. Transferred home and under the watchful eye of family, Hospice professionals, and the Palliative Team, Barb was able to be home for a few more days. Rest In Peace dear sister (and aunt, wife, daughter, mother, grand mother, even a great-grand mother!). VCU we are all, including Nurse Barbara, forever grateful.

I visited the ER at St. Mary's around 6:00 PM due to sudden bleeding and other symptoms that left…read moreme anxious and uncertain. Since I was already at the hospital, this was my only option. It was also my first time ever going to the ER. I was moved to a curtained communal waiting area, where my experience changed dramatically. From that point forward, I received very little attention from the nursing staff. No one checked on me or provided updates unless I got up and asked. I had to initiate everything, from getting instructions for a urine sample to asking for updates on pending results. It felt like a self-service situation, with minimal support for someone in a vulnerable state. Around an hour later or maybe two, Dr. Gatewood, who was kind, thorough, and communicative did stop by and explained all the CT scan and bloodwork results. This helped ease my concerns. There was one test remaining that he couldn't go over which resulted in me waiting additional hours. Around 11:00 PM, I received an email saying my discharge was being processed, before I had seen a second provider. Shortly after that, Dr. Ross Kalman came in. He introduced himself and quickly reviewed some test findings, focusing on one result without offering a full explanation. I asked questions to better understand what could be causing the bleeding, and his response was, "We only deal with emergencies here." That comment felt dismissive, especially after waiting nearly five hours. I wasn't frustrated at not having a diagnosis, I was seeking clarity, and this was my only opportunity to ask. I also brought up dehydration, something I've dealt with in the past, and requested IV fluids. Dr. Kalman denied the request, saying my labs looked fine. However, in his discharge notes, he incorrectly wrote that I denied oral fluids , I was never even offered any. In reality, he told me to "continue doing what you've been doing," which was vague and unhelpful. As our conversation ended, he said, "You look disappointed," and walked away. That's when I began to feel physically overwhelmed. I started to hyperventilate and that's when nurse Alexis eventually noticed and came to help me calm down. I stood up, intending to leave, but my legs gave out. I didn't yell or act aggressively , I simply became physically unwell. With all that being said, I was told this is a panic attack which I have never experienced. I'm in shocked why vitals were never checked, and how Dr. Kalman never returned or followed up. What's most concerning is how the episode was documented. His discharge summary described me as "verbally aggressive," "yelling," and said I "threw myself on the floor." None of this is true. The interaction happened privately, and no one else -- including multiple nurses, techs, and Dr. Gatewood, had any issues with me throughout my visit. Dr. Kalman did not examine me during or after this incident, yet made assumptions in his notes that were both exaggerated and inaccurate. As part of standard protocol, Dr. Kalman would have been aware of what happened yet he never came back to check on me. This whole incident is not just unprofessional and it's unacceptable. To make matters worse, my primary care doctor never received any record of this ER visit. That lack of communication is alarming, and reflects the broader issue of poor follow-through and documentation. This visit left me feeling unsupported and misrepresented at a time when I needed clarity and care. I'm sharing my experience so others can be aware of how important it is to advocate for themselves in medical settings, and how quickly a vulnerable moment can be misunderstood when compassion and attention are missing.

Then when I got tired of his smart aleck attitude I asked him if he treated everyone this way. He just kept repeating "do you have any other questions?" Over and over. Then I'd ask him one and he would ask me "do you have any other questions?" I asked him why was he talking to me like a robot. It was my first time taking my son to the ER and you can def tell I had the mommy jitters. I didn't know what to expect and bringing my son who is nonverbal, autistic, and ADHD...you just worry as a momma. The nurses and doc in the back were fantastic. We were there for about 2.5-3 hours, which I think makes sense because we also had to get my son some of their numbing ointment before performing the stitches. They were so informative and so understanding with my son. The doc was fantastic with my son when doing the stitches and def quick hands. At the end of this visit, he ended up walking out with 3 stitches. 2nd Visit - my son woke up with the right side of his face super swollen. It was 6:30 in the morning and I literally put on a jacket and took him straight here. I also couldn't think of another place that was open at that time and his pediatrican didn't open up until 8 so...you can see why I decided here. There is Urgent Care parking next to the building and since I'm experienced I was able to bring a packed backpack with things to keep him occupied. We got checked in and brought to the back quickly like the last time. The nurses were fantastic and listened to our concern and what was going on with our little guy (nothing new, no new detergent, no new foods - what is going on?!) They kept me updated along the way with EVERYTHING they were planning on doing and explaining the reason why. It was scary but relieving at the same time. We ended up getting admitted to the hospital upstairs (which I am so grateful I decided to take him to the UR here). Again, everyone in the ER were wonderful and I HIGHLY recommend this place for kids. Thank you!

We headed to the regular side and the kind men in the vestibule stopped us and directed us to another door, which was the opening to the pediatric ER. The whole experience was great. We were able to check in immediately, then we waited about 45min for triage. Once we got in to triage, they did a quick explanation of what was going on and sent us to a room immediately. I really appreciated that, as breathing issues are nothing to play with. It was extremely validating that they saw fit to treat us right away. Once we were in the room, the doctor came in within about 5-10 minutes. He was nice, but kind of loud and quick? I don't know how else to explain it. He wasn't my absolute favorite, but he got the job done. Let us know what was going on, and ordered x rays and treatment. The x rays were done shortly after and then a nurse came in to give meds. The only negative I would say is that we sat there waiting for a really long time without any explanation of what was going on. I thought we were waiting for them to start a certain treatment on my son, but they never came and did it. So finally someone came in to check on him and updated me that they decided not to do the treatment, that he looked good, and I guess all the wait was for them to observe him to see if he got better after the initial dose of meds. All fine and good! I just wish that someone had updated us on the treatment plan so we knew why we were waiting. Anyway, we were discharged around 2:30am and my son was definitely showing signs of improvement. I was really happy with the nurse who helped us. She was an angel and continued to ask us if we had any questions, which we did and she answered so patiently. Kidmed is only open from 2pm-8 or 9pm, and of course the doctor's office is only open during business hours, so whenever my kids get sick outside of those hours, I am definitely coming back to the St. Mary's Pediatric ER!
