THANK YOU VCU! A huge healthcare complex in the heart of Richmond, Virginia. Providing countless medical services to those in need. Speaking of countless, my story is only one of countless others. My story: Recently, my oldest sister (previously a nurse) and last sibling of four, suffered a massive stroke in the right hemisphere of her brain. Flown in a Life Star from a remote location eighty miles away as the Star flies to VCU. Immediately emitted to the Critical Care Center ICU. She eventually, gained from movement on her right side and very limited communication in about a week. Thou her prognosis wasn't positive, the medical care team kept hope and provided time for loved ones to visit and make peace. My daughter (also a nurse) and I were able to visit. The medical staff made sure every visitor were comfortable, informed, and able to spend as much time as needed to be with her. After about two weeks in the facility, my sister's final wish was to be home with loved ones; all with the mutual agreement with her husband and the immediate family. The Palliative Care Team assisted everyone discussing options and planning the next steps together. The Team was available as needed to answer and questions or concerns. Transferred home and under the watchful eye of family, Hospice professionals, and the Palliative Team, Barb was able to be home for a few more days. Rest In Peace dear sister (and aunt, wife, daughter, mother, grand mother, even a great-grand mother!). VCU we are all, including Nurse Barbara, forever grateful. read more

Their customer support is outsourced to people trying to speak English. Their billing department is difficult to contact and that's putting it mildly. When I went in for an outpatient procedure they handed me a $365 bill prior to the procedure, and asked if I could make a payment. Called my insurance and they said my copay was $284. My late wife was treated here from August 30th until she passed on September 13, 2025. I've personally waited to write this review because I wanted to have time to process what all occurred. First, 90% of the staff are amazing. The nurses were constantly monitoring her, and keeping me in the loop, whether I was in the room or at The Doorways. Second, the doctors seemed to be extremely knowledgeable and their decisions provided me with an extra week with my best friend of fifteen years. However, the OT and PT teams are simply parasites sucking the life out of the patients they are supposed to be assisting. I voiced my displeasure with their ways and decisions on multiple occasions, only to be gaslit into believing they had my wife's best interest at heart. They were obviously just looking for a paycheck. She was comatose upon arrival and remained so for the first 3 days. On day 4 she woke up. Day 5 they sent in OT and PT. She was then unconscious for 24 hours. Day 8 they sent them again. I made my point they were pushing her too hard. They again pushed her too far. Her words to me after the parasites left the room was "they're annoying me to death and wearing me out". She was then unconscious again. Do yourself a favor and make sure you deny OT and PT team members access to your loved ones or yourself while a patient here. read more

I have a complex medical condition and have seen numerous VCU Health providers. When I was first diagnosed, all of my doctors were VCU Health and over the past 2 years I've replaced them all with other doctors in the community. I have a rare disease so it's understandable that many doctors haven't treated it before. What's beyond my comprehension is the unwillingness of my VCU Health doctors to acknowledge the fact that they don't know everything about said rare disease, or to educate themselves about it, or even read journal articles provided to them. It's a power struggle when all I want is appropriate care. It's hard to have faith in someone's treatment decisions when they know less about your disease than you do. And the politics at VCU Health are ridiculous. I had one doctor identify a problem but wouldn't make the referral to the appropriate specialist herself for fear of offending the referring doctor so she just sent a note suggesting the referring doctor make the referral. It took a full year for me to actually be seen by the right specialist and that's only because I gave up and sought one outside of VCU Health. How is any of this prioritizing the health of the patient?! read more

STAY AWAY. They could care LESS. I got all my doctors at VCU because of my insurance coverage and I wanted to keep everything in one place. My endocrinologist REFUSED to prescribe me insulin multiple times (I'm type 1) and once she refused until I had an appointment which was then cancelled without notifying me. Yesterday I had another incident where I needed my dexcom sensors (they expire today and I'm still waiting for her to approve the medication so I can, yknow, actually live) and she said she wouldn't refill it for 5 days and I asked what I'm supposed to do if I can't read my glucose levels (she wouldn't refill test strips either) and she said "I don't know I guess you'll be spending some time in the hospital". I've called patient relations countless times and they don't care, nor did they do anything about that. Instead of helping me adjust my insulin dose amounts my endocrine looks at me for 2 minutes and then just says "keep doing what you're doing" even after expressing concerns countless times. I made an eye dr appointment about 4 years ago which I still have yet to go to because they keep cancelling on me. The one time I went finally about a month ago they told me after I got there my insurance no longer covered it and they had started notifying people but hadn't notified me. I wasn't too pressed because I was told it would be $70 out of pocket anyway because contact prescription exams are considered cosmetic but the lady told me it'd be over $800. I was also told I could get my parking pass validated but they refused to do that too so I basically drove just under an hour and took time off work for nothing. The only provider I actually like is Catherine Douglas in the OBGYN she is so sweet and I wish she could be all my doctors there. But Dr Maden absolutely sucks and honestly her and most of the providers and staff should never have gotten medical licenses. No big issues with VCU medical care. But the billing, insurance coordination, and customer support are ZERO stars. Don't believe me? Call customer support at 888-803-0082. Spoiler, a human will NEVER answer. Wait for 30 minutes - every 15 seconds, a recording announces, "do you want a callback?" If you leave a callback number, they will eventually call you back (could be hours later), but the person calling will not be the person who can help you. They will tell you to call (yet another) 800 number. You guessed it. That number will not answer either, and the recording will ask, "do you want a callback?". And if you accept the callback request, they will eventually call you. But it will be someone who can't help you. So they will tell you to call (yet another) 800 number. Agggghhhhh! read more

I have another new doctor who is absolutely the worst. He's horrible. He has caused me physical harm due to his negligence. I do not think he has updated his education since he graduated. He lies, smiles outside, and is a golden boy of the upper echelon, who kisses each other's backside, but behind closed doors, he's a real SOB. I have had it with VCU in the short time I have been going there. They are the most pathetic hospital I have ever been in since I moved to Virginia. The upper crust of Richmond needs to stop donating its money. The state needs to shut them down, clean house, and reopen with a whole new team from the top down. Not every department or doctor is bad, but too many are, and they get away with harming people. I have met too many. I am looking elsewhere. So my mother had a stroke. She is currently at vcu hospital she had a blanket that belongs to my daughter. This blanket has been with her later papa and other family members when they were in the hospital. The nurses today left my mother sitting in urine for over 30 minutes. The blanket is gone. Nurse are not looking for it. Mr Daniel J Do told me. Good luck proving it was their. My whole family is a witness to it being their. The nurse with no hair was rough with my mother. Did help clean her for well over 30 minutes she is now sore and most likely didn't care to put the blanket on the chair. Now vcu police is involved. The nurses name is virginia. Never went to look. Dr Angela Credit, DO This Dr explained she could run the blood test but she wouldn't. I ended up having lyme disease, a co-infection w Lyme, scarlet fever and mold toxicity. Additionally, I had 4 parasites. This physician was rude and unkind. If it wasn't for VCU's top nephrologist nothing would of transpired. As a nurse, this physician does NOT listen to her patients nor does she have attention to detail. I hope no one encounters this physician!! They are absolute sadist! My daughter came home from the hospital yesterday after having wrist surgery she fell from a two story house. They sent her home with Tramadol. That may work for some people it did not work at all for her. I gave it to her as prescribed along with Advil and Tylenol the moment the nerve blocker stopped working she was in screaming crying pain! I had to bring her to the ER. I guess they thought we were drug addicts looking for a fix. they did give her something in the ER that helped for the night. when I called them and let them know they gave her a prescription for gabapentin. I really hope this works. If not, I will be up there again tonight. No one should have to go through this. I understand that there are people that are looking to gain access to medicines, but just because there's a problem with drug abuse, and that these medicines can be addictive. But after surgery, it is ridiculous to tell people that Advil and Motrin are enough. It is sadist behavior! Please do not go here for surgery. This will not be anonymous. My name is Holly Barton. Ortho nurses were some of the best I've ever had, demonstrating combination of excellent relationship skills and technical nursing skills. The ortho spine team is and an excellent team! Dr Barber has magical hands that even exceed her great reputation! Her residents have excellent doctor patient relationship skills and should Excel under her tutelage! And, everything starts in the Emergency Department that is truly top-notch!. They had me evaluated and did an MRI and a CT scan and three X-rays and were planning admission before anybody even came around to ask for my insurance card - wow! The ortho rooms are large and have windows! The dietary services, at least on the ortho unit, are truly impressive for a hospital! I think they can match a three-star restaurant for taste, but exceed them for healthy choices! I will never go anywhere else! read more

I have taken my son to the emergency room three (3) times last week, for the same stomach pain and throwing up. Every time we were there, we waited hours. His blood pressure was extremely high all while he was still throwing up and waiting in the waiting room. Each time my son was discharged his diagnosis was "Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome". I knew something was wrong, so when this happened again I took him to Johnston Willis Hospital on Midlothian Turnpike. Within 4 hours the attending physician in the emergency room found a problem and diagnosed him correctly. I will tell this story to whoever will listen! We moved here about 4 years ago from Northern Virginia. Finding health care has been the hardest part of the move. I have had several interactions with VCU since we have been here and felt it was time to post a review. In 2020, I made an appointment with the Endocrinology department for my son and diabetes management. The earliest we could see someone was a year away. At that time, I knew it took a bit to get in so we decided to schedule the appointment and keep seeing the NOVA doctor until we could change providers. The appointment came in 2021 and at the end, we were told they could see him again in 13 months. That is not proper care for a diabetic and if you can't handle the caseload you shouldn't take on new clients. We did not rebook. In March/April 2023, a cancer mass was found on my thyroid so I was directed to the Cancer Center. They couldn't see me until October of 2023. So, I didn't book. In 2024, I had a recurrence surely thinking they had a protocol for this and I would be seen soon I called again. In Feb of 2024, I was told we could see you in Feb 2025 No thank you. In late Feb of 2024, I went to see a genetic counselor, Elizabeth M. While she was taking my information and typing she would hum. Hum, hum, hummmmm. I have no idea why but every time typing. I don't know if that is a nervous tick or even if she is aware. This to me, set the tone of she didn't care about what I was saying simply checking the boxes and moving on. Her bedside manner was cold and uninterested and seemed like she was just going through the motions. My results came back and sat in my portal for about 10 days. I called on the 10th day stating I had been awaiting a call back and it had been almost two weeks. Had I counted the exact days, no? I was making a judgment based on the requested date that was posted in bold letters not marked the requested date. She called me this am, and the voicemail again was very defensive stating they weren't in there for two weeks. So, I pulled them and they were there for 10 days. She stated she had been out for a funeral which could be valid. There should be a protocol for emergencies where another person would return lab results while out, a buddy system. I have zero faith in this provider and have a follow-up with another healthcare provider next Thursday. At best, they did the BARE minimum. They need a class on how to improve how they communicate with a patient, compassion, body language, and stop the humming I say stay away from Richmond providers at all costs. Healthcare here is 10 to 20 years behind Northern VA providers. read more

Went to VCU ER with internal bleeding and they kicked me out after a protracted wait and request to speak with a doctor or nurse (one of their annoyed registration employees said "there's nothing wrong with you" while the bleeding was occurring). I was forced to leave while in medical distress. Had to find a new doctor and finally had surgery a month later, performed by a non-VCU doctor. VCU then claimed they weren't going to bill me, and did not, but they went ahead and submitted a claim to my insurance company anyway, and collected, as if I was seen and treated, which never happened. When I reported this as a mistake (potentially fraudulent), VCU said they were keeping the payment for non-service and refused to pay my insurance company back. read more

I was sent to VCU because I ended up with a severe infection from a surgical infection I had surgery on my Rt hand Nov 2021 at SPAH that got infected , surgery was done again May 2022 and it got infected again so Sentera did surgery Again 20 June 2022 this time being admitted into Sentera General till 7 July 2022 .I was transferred to VCU due to the infection and again had surgery and was release 11 July 2022 . I received 3 bills from VCU requesting payment $17000.00 I paid the Bill . And then TRICARE AND MEDICARE PAID the bill I have called VCU AND they received paiment from my insurance but will not refund my payment which my insurance has covered. Another horrible experience at my vcu health. Not only was the billing a mess with my private insurance, they are awful to deal with. I got put in a wait list for an evaluation for therapy for my son at VTCC and after waiting three months and completing an hour evaluation was told oh wait we don't have any therapists that can help you at this time since he is pediatrics!!! No apology and a nice bill after. What a waste of money and time! I also had an awful experience with an incredibly rude nurse at VTCC. I highly recommend avoiding vcu health if you can. VCU health is the definition of unsanitary hospitals, long waiting lines, incompetent staff, poor medical services and unreasonably high medical charges. Would not recommend this hospital to anyone. You are better off, going to a St. Marys or any other private hospital that may charge you a hefty price which will still be less than what you'd pay at VCU health, but at-least you're guaranteed a quality service and attention worthy of the charges you'll pay. Response - to a very generic reply from hospital personnel Keith K below to contact patient relations. The first thing I did was contact patient relations to zero resolution. They did absolutely nothing. Patient doesn't ever see the emergency room. Never gets to see the doctor. Doesn't get admitted. Feels okay, gets staffs permission to leave for having to wait more than 3 hours in unsanitary lobby condition between coughing patients during a pandemic, informs the staff. Staff says it's ok to leave and that they will put it in the system. Patient leaves. Bam! Patient gets charged with flat additional $2000 emergency room in his bill. No explanation. Nothing. Fails to process health insurance. And when asked again to go through health insurance, VCU Health didn't consider advised charges from insurance. Rejects reduced insurance charges recommendations. When complained, puts the bill on hold for one year saying they're "investigating" the case. Never resolved or updated the case and after one year charge the patient same thing all over again. They take your co-pay at your office visit. Then 3 months later they bill you for the co-pay and any remaining balance insurance didn't cover. They did this 3 times. How can they be any good with a sorry billing department and Reps who take co-pays and the billing office is not aware in 3 months! I didn't think this hospital could get worse than it was three years ago when I was in a car accident, refused to be operated on for 12 days because I was here and not near Alexandria where I live, and treated like I was just a statistic (money being the goal). The stories I could tell are unbelievable but true, the worst being that I had all my belongings stolen, $3000 cash ripped out of the seams of my overnight bag, and I moved rooms 5 times in 12 days. I had no sleep for 3 days straight, and the rest were between 1 and 3 hours. The doctors were arrogant, incompetent (one asked me to tell him what another doctor said because he didn't return her call!) and the interns uninterested to the point of having their phones on, texting away, paying no attention to the patient. But I survived, went to Mt Vernon Hospital which has excellent and caring staff in every category, and quite a few rock star doctors who put me back together. Highest kudos to all staff. Three years later I see my experience at VCU as one of the worst in my 71 years of life. I am writing this email in reference to the unprofessional treatment I have received from VCU. This is not the first time but this is last time that I have decided to let VCU health care professionals get away with the lack of professional and negligence VCU has shown . September 26 around 7 pm , I was admitted to The most unsanitary room and smallest room vcu had to offer . The room had blood on the floor , dirty linen just all around dirty . I asked the nurse if she could call housekeeping to clean and she informed me they already cleaned . As you may not know I am a paraplegic and I believe that half of my lack of care was due to disability discrimination and health care professionals cutting corners with our care . The only reason I decided to stay was because I needed this colonoscopy procedure . During the stay , I started recording my room showing the lack of space that I had . The nurse manager ( Cindy tyler , RN) who refused to give her name to me comes in without any concerns in regards to situation but a strong care of making sure I was not recording her nurses. She did not address the dirtiness of the room, she did not address the violation of my privacy , she even walked off during mid sentence and would not give me her name . After that , I did not see a nurse until 5:45 asking to give me an IV. I had no vital signs taken except when I first entered the hospital . I had no medication administered which could have resulted in me having blood clots . I had urine sitting from 8pm to 9:13 the next morning . no one had taken vitals or even helped me use the restroom . I also never received any medication or prep for my surgery . I asked to be discharged due to the medical negligence and discrimination of my disability and race . I explained to them how the nurses appeared to be retaliating against me because I voiced my concern about my care and STATED that I would record the treatment that they was giving . Doctors and a charge nurse name Aaron ( whom I thought cared )listened to my concerns again this morning , but to my surprise he was another nurse that had been caught talking about his patients . The charge nurse Aaron was heard by me and I quote " whatever go ahead and go I don't care " the receptionist ask who was he talking about and he stated " the girl that wants to go against medical advice . As I was rolling up in my wheelchair I responded and say " this is exactly why I am leaving lack of professionalism and negligence ". He responded " it's funny I was not talking about you I'm talking about someone it's a few of y'all leaving against medical advice " . Regardless of who you try and say you're talking a bout I should not have to sit here and listen to nurses and other health care professionals sitting and discussing patients . The charge nurse Aaron also laughed as he seen the list if reasons that I signed and write about the reasons of me leaving against medical advice . It's unbelievable how happy the nurses are watching patients leave due to the negligence and dirty environment of the hospitals . Nurses should not be allowed to ignore patients and their medical care and discuss how they do not care about the patients . These nurses should be held accountable for their actions . Unlike these nurses and the treatment I've endure I will not discuss them in their face . I am going above and beyond to get VCU hospital help with better health care professionals. I will be reaching out to the news and help to get legal representation no one should ever have to experience this . I would like for the nurses to be removed and fired from working with patients if they are unwilling and incompetent to help work with patients who need medical attention . I had surgery at VCU Hospital in Aug of 2021. At 74 years old, I certainly didn't think that I would ever need surgery, but I did and in the opinion of my referring physician needed to go to GYN Oncology at VCU for that surgery. I had the surgery on Thursday, was discharged on Saturday and recovered fully and expeditiously. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, including the doctors, nursing staff, housekeeping staff and food service staff were kind, caring, professional, efficient and friendly. I never want to be in the hospital again; however, VCU Hospital is the place I want to be if the need for hospitalization arises in my future. It was also pretty cool that my surgical team of doctors were all female--the surgeon, the resident and the medical student! read more

This is for the obgyn departments at both the downtown and the Stony Point location. I had the best possible experience with the nurse practitioners and doctors I saw. My old obgyn stopped taking my insurance (and failed to notify me until I tried to schedule a check up) but VCU was really easy to register with as a new patient. Additionally, Dr. Allison Kingcade and Dr. Robin Lawson were both phenomenal; kind, communicative, excellent bedside manner, and just overall made me feel extremely comfortable, which can be pretty hard in that specialty. I was having an IUD removed and replaced when I saw Dr. Lawson and requested anesthesia of some kind, and she informed me that she always provides that unless requested otherwise. That was genuinely revolutionary to hear, as women's health often ignores pain treatment, but she agreed that it should be the standard of care. VCU Health works hard to improve the lives of their patients .They can help make a difference in your life. My mother is here to have Dr. Richard K Shephard do an Ablation on her . She has Afib . We have been waiting since 12:00 and it's now 3:00 . This is the hardest part ... waiting for them to take your loved one back . Her room is spacious and had a large bathroom in it . The nurses are calming and professional . Yay , one of the surgeons assisting is here in the room . He's kindly going over some things and risks of the surgery. Letting her know what will be taking place. signing some more paperwork . Dr. Richard K Shephard is here now talking to my mother going over the procedure with her and telling her some positive things about the Ablation . Ablation is not a cure for Afib , but it's a procedure that can give you the greatest quality of life. They will be watching her heart through the entire procedure . Dr Shephard told my mom she's the youngest patient of the day ... his last patient was 89 and did great . I love a Doctor with a sense of humor. Waited 6 hours in the emergency waiting to see a doc for my son. Finally have up like many did. Others around us were into their 8th hour of waiting for same. With this absurdly long emergency department wait we decided to tough it out, get some sleep and try to see a really live doctor in the morning. Others were waiting for 8 hours ahead of us. I mean really, is there any confidence that we would have seen a competent and alert doctor to test my son for anemia and provide the proper prescription for his condition? Zip, zee, zilch on the confidence scale. As we waited, it was not as if we saw much more action that people being called into the triage rooms. We couldn't have seen more than 10 people move through the system in the 6 hours we where there. The guy that was sitting next to us waited for 8 hours with a sliced open hand from a kitchen accident that required 32 stitches. Imagine holding your hand up above your heart for 8 hours waiting in an emergency room. It is literally faster to drive north 2 hours to INOVA in Fairfax VA where you can find competent healthcare professionals than to wait at this "hospital". We could have saved 2 hours by doing this **assuming** that VCU Medical would have seen my son had we waited another 2 hours (who the blankity blank knows?) To cap it off, we tried to be courteous and let the receptionist know we were leaving and our position would be open in the line up. She was slightly snotty / indignant and asked if we no longer needed the care with an attitude that was clearly saying "then why did you waste our valuable time here in the first place?" In response let her know that after waiting for 6 hours there was no reasonable amount of confidence that we would see a doctor anytime soon and if we did, the doctor's ability to provide care was highly doubtful at this point. Mind you, no "thank you" no "I'm very sorry for the wait", no "should I have a doctor follow up with you just in case"., no nothing. At least they provided nice comfortable cozy waiting room couches for the local street people (reeking of urine) to use as beds. What a treat that was (yes, that's when we decided to not wait another 2 hours for healthcare crap shoot at VCU Medical) What a horrible joke. There should be a "not on your friggin life" negative star in Yelp for places like this. read more

I'm gonna say I came in here with my dying friend and they split us up! Her waiting room smelled like piss and mine had Panera . I bought her some fucking soup and it got cold because they held her down there for 10 whole ass hours. All in all MCV got a shitty smell crappy rules a horrible wait time and an alright Panera. read more

I wouldn't send a sick animal to it. To many foreign doctors and nurses who you can't understand. A garbage hospital.

As a visitor, the most important thing to remember is that there are several different buildings which all connect so make sure you know what building you need to be in. However, if you get lost (which I did several times), there are several information desks and the nurses/staff are trained to spot lost visitors and will walk you to the correct building/elevator. The hospital is located in the heart of downtown Richmond and there are several parking decks with ample parking spaces available for a $2 charge. If the visitor lot is full, the hospital will reimburse you for a portion of your valet cost. All of the staff we have encountered have been extremely friendly and knowledgeable. If you are heading to MCV for a procedure, keep in mind that there may be students shadowing the doctors - MCV is one of the top medical colleges and I met several students in the hallways, during procedures and in the cafeteria. The hospital plays a lullaby throughout the hospital speakers each time a baby is born...it's a nice little touch to brighten the days of patients. There are also several options for dining - Subway, Chicfila, Einstein Bagels, Au Bon Pain and Wendy's are all easily accessible in addition to the hospitals cafeteria. While I hope there is not a need to visit MCV again in the near future, if there is ever a need to be in a hospital, I'd highly recommend MCV. read more

My mom has a background of narcotics, her paper work Cleary shows she is allergic to percocets and they gave her oxy? I asked the nurse Patricia, about it she stated some times people say they are allergic to percocets but they give the oxy any way . I stated its malpractice to see clearly she is allergic and has a narcotic background. As a professional they should explain to the client what oxycodone is and my mom would have told her she is allergic she said it was a minor mistake. Lady u could have killed my mom! VCU Health - Mom had surgery today on her ankle - Medical Centers Near Me - Richmond, Virginia

I have only been to MCV (thank goodness) twice. The first time was YEARS ago to pick up my niece who was taken there as a precaution after falling while at camp. Uneventful. This time, I went to visit friends who were having surgery -- one donating a kidney, the other receiving it. MCV is right downtown, so it's a congested area. The parking garage is tight, but not necessarily full. The hospital consists of a bunch of different buildings not so obviously connected by walkways, so you don't always realize you're walking into a different building. That makes for confusing directions even with signage. If you're there everyday working, I'm sure you figure it out. This plus the fact that I was given incorrect information by a front desk person who told me my friends were not and wouldn't be on her floor or in her building even because that's not where they do that kind of surgery (after being told by another front desk person on another floor that they were) takes them down a star. My friends were there. The food options seemed to be okay. There was a Chick-Fil-A, an Au Bon Pain, and a cafeteria that offered a variety of items at a good price. I got a salad, soup and bottled water for $7. Regarding healthcare services, the surgeries were uncomplicated, and everything's going as planned. Both of my friends are scheduled to be released as predicted without any kind of anticipated complications, so I'd say that deserves a good star rating!
