The huge, thick walls that muffle the sounds of the outside world, the nice, cool enclosed inner courtyard, the big old-timey library, the motherly head cook and her three meals a day -- you just can't beat it for atmosphere. I talked about it for years after my two stays there. The bad news (well, not really bad): First, location -- It's in a hectic part of town that is some distance from the sites you may want to visit, so you probably want to rent a car. The neighborhood is kind of scary, but not too scary. Very, very busy and low-income. I never had a problem, though. The nice thing is there's secure enclosed parking connected to the building for only $5 a week (when I was there). I rented a car for a week and really enjoyed myself. Too, frequent busses are immediately at hand. The other bad thing is, the place is not air-conditioned. So, if you're there during hot weather, if you're not acclimated to sleeping in a hot room, it can be miserable. At the time I stayed, they had a few fans you could rent for $5 a week. That helped some, but not a lot. So, try to come during mild weather. Conclusion -- I love this place.
