Caring Heart Animal Hospital Review - 3/3/26…read more I had been searching for a new vet for my Great Pyrenees. He's a big guy with various issues since we adopted him from a kill shelter about 7-years ago. I had been going to Belle Mead Animal Hospital, and they are very good, but I was looking for a more local vet that had the time to spend working on his issues. Some of those issues included a luxated patella, digestive sensitivity, paw infections and the like. I found Caring Heart through the Next Door app, and the reviews were very good, so I figured I would give it a shot. Since the very first appointment back in 2024, I found Dr. Chris & his staff to be an excellent choice. He was compassionate, he listened and provided a thoughtful & dedicated approach to my GP's care. His prices were fair (and less than my previous vet) and more important, his approach always focused on care and not "spending money for the sake of..." Well, recently, Dr. Chris sold the practice, and my concern was that I had to begin the search process all over again. Well, that wasn't the case at all. Dr. Silit, acquired the practice, and although he was highly recommended by Dr. Chris prior to his departure, you never know what to expect until that first visit. Well, I'm delighted to report that Dr. Silit is outstanding. He takes the time to understand the issues, listens very well and more important, he provides timely and effective care at every turn. I should also say that as a Surgeon, you would think he would promote "surgery" at every turn, even if there are less evasive options. I'm happy to report that nothing could be further from the truth. I've always gotten an appointment quickly, and his pricing and recommendations always make sense. Additionally, I found his staff, Brandon & Jessica, truly round out the experience when it comes to making you feel welcome. They are there with you in case of any emergency needs. My feeling is that no business would likely receive 5-stars across the board. Someone will always be disappointed or find reasons not to recommend. In this case, I assure you that your experience with Dr. Silit and his team, based on my ongoing relationship with them, will stand the test of time. Whether you need meds, general wellness care or emergency counsel, Dr. Silit and his team are there. Finally, you should know that I'm not one to rate businesses unless I'm deeply disappointed or highly impressed. Caring Heart in Skillman deserves a visit, if you're like me & you're highly selective about your pet's care and need for a responsive, friendly and knowledgeable staff that simply "gets it". This is one small town vet with big positive outcomes that's worth your time and business.

He suggested we medicate my dog before coming in to calm down. Then they muzzled him so they can take a blood sample. Horrible, horrible experience.

After 20 years, 10 cats and thousands of dollars, I can no longer trust the clerical staff of…read morePrinceton Animal Hospital to act in the best interests of me and my cat companions. For years, we received excellent service and great kindness from the married veterinarians who operated the clinic. From providing me with excellent references when I wanted to adopt a cat to offering sensitive services in helping to see each kitty cross the "Rainbow Bridge," this was a highly empathetic and ethical veterinary practice. The doctors Miele retired and sold the practice, and I did not have any problems until recently when I took my 14-year-old Himalayan, Dexter, for a checkup. He is very healthy but has some tummy issues. There was no discussion of costs prior to the exam and I did not think that was odd because I always assumed they would be fair. I was asked if I wanted to include a recommended blood test - I said yes, not realizing it was about $350. I had planned on spending about $500 and was shocked when the bill was $1000! I explained that I thought that was high but I would pay $500 now and the balance the following Monday. This arrangement was not acceptable - The office manager, a woman with few people skills or empathy, insisted I pay the entire amount and made veiled threats that included stating that leaving without paying the full amount was equivalent to walking out of a store without paying. They treated me like a potential criminal instead of a long-term client and refused to send the blood test out until I paid the full amount. I am an 83-year-old senior citizen with a serious lung condition. I am on O2 24/7. I have lived in the same condo for 35 years and have run a successful business since moving here. I have no record of any kind beyond traffic tickets. Did this witch and the equally unhelpful women manning the desk at Princeton Animal Hospital think that I was going to toss all that, grab my cat and flee into the night between Thursday and Monday, just to avoid paying $500? Luckily, I had Dexter in his carrier and in my hand because I feel certain they would have held him hostage. I admit that my Irish temper flared but I have a lot to cope with being ill with a terminal disease and being threatened with more financial hassles and stress. So, I just left. I called the next day - the Manager was off and I was told that the blood test would not be sent out until I paid the $500. They could not guarantee the specimen would still be viable and I might have to bring Dexter in again for a new test! As if! I just cancelled the blood test and asked them to invoice me the balance which they did. I am going into this kind of detail to show how far Princeton Animal Hospital has fallen and to tell you that they may be within their rights. This is becoming a common practice in New York, according to a friend of mine, cat care expert and groomer, Anitra Frazier. My advice would be to discuss the costs in advance before even bringing your dog or cat to any vet. And to certainly avoid Princeton Animal Hospital. So, now I need to find a new vet for Dexter. (I should have noted earlier that my quarrel is not with Princton Animal Hospital's veterinarians but with its obnoxious clerical staff.) It is really sad to see how far this one excellent practice has fallen.

This practice has been going through a lot of changes that can make it difficult to get an…read moreappointment in an emergency. However, the vets seem very competent and caring, and the staff is pleasant. Everyone seems to love animals. The prices are high.

UPDATE: I'm no longer taking my dog here, and I don't recommend it to anyone…read more It turns out the doctors are not as nice as they initially seemed. At my last visit here, Dr. C was outright nasty to me and cold toward my dog. My rescue is terrified of vets, and I guess the doctors here got it in their heads that because they don't know what to do, this must be the owner's fault. The last time I went there, Dr. C. came into the room already fuming as if I'd offended her by bringing my dog here for his annual exam. I was shocked. She implied that my dog had problems he doesn't have, such as food aggression. Another doctor here once said with authority that my dog was reactive with them because he was "guarding" ME. They even wrote in the notes that he's "fractious around mom," which is not true at all. They've tried taking him in the back and it doesn't help. He's terrified of the VET. He is not like this at home. Full stop. Dr. C. apparently drew on her lack of knowledge about this to tell me unequivocally that he's like this because I'm "too soft." She said they "see it all the time" at Banfield Princeton, which doesn't surprise me, because if you're going to make this assumption about every owner whose dog is afraid of you, you're going to "see" this problem everywhere. The doctors here seem to never read the notes, so they implied almost every time I went there that I hadn't taken my dog to training, which couldn't be more false. In fact, I've seen several trainers, both in classes and one-on-one. I've read extensively about conditioning via positive reinforcement, and I interact regularly with behaviorists online. Of course, I'm not perfect. I'll continue to look for ways to make this easier for the vets, and for my dog! I don't want him to suffer like this. It was awful for me to sit there being belittled by this doctor while my baby was going through this traumatic experience. I just wanted to help him and comfort him. What disappoints me most is that I thought we were all on the same page. Until Dr. C. walked in with eyes squinted in hatred I thought we were all trying to help my dog. I could see how much she despised both of us. It was disturbing. I tried to give feedback to Banfield, but they said it will just go back to the doctor in charge at this hospital, and I think this attitude is pervasive there. I managed to find a Fear Free vet, so I'm going to take my dog there instead. That vet, who did specific training in dealing with this kind of fear, confirmed that this is not being caused by anything that I'm doing. My dog is likely afraid of the vet because of experiences he had before I adopted him as an adult dog. This is what the trainers and his previous doctor said, so Dr. C. and her colleagues are definitely in the minority. Although my dog was afraid of his previous vet, they had a matter-of-fact approach to dealing with this. I don't know how Banfield Princeton got it in their heads to blame the owners for this, but it's not helpful. There's plenty of (free!) information available online for vets looking to assuage vet-averse animals. Some of the recommendations would be very easy and cheap to adopt. For example, just putting a mat on the exam table can make a big difference, because dogs are afraid of walking on shiny surfaces. I also want to note that the communication problems I noted in my previous review persist. More than once, I had to drive there because they don't pick up the phone. On multiple occasions, I would get there, still on hold, and find someone sitting at the desk free to help. They say every time that they "think" there's an issue with the phones. Well, I can confirm that you definitely have an issue, so maybe can go ahead and look into it. I don't recommend this place even if your pet is not fearful at the vet. I always felt that they were ignoring questions about my dog's health, and they never followed up about previous medical care unless I specifically asked about it. This is a corporate machine, and they don't seem interested in doing anything that would slow them down. Just getting refills for medication was a big hassle. At this last visit, Dr. C would not even give me a refill for my dog's preventative heartworm medication because I had not done a fecal test that day (it wasn't yet due). I hope for the sake of the animals under their care that they see this feedback and use it to improve this place.
