Update - They have reimbursed the unused hours and made amends. I still highly suggest removing the expiration from your service to make sure your business always produces a fair exchange. Original - So I put $1300 into retainer for assistance, but don't immediately need it. I ask to get it extended. They say, "yes sir". I need help and apparently the expiration (which I feel is a SCAM to put on your product) never got extended. Robbed of $1300 at 75 an hour. read more

the tutor did not show up on the zoom on time, did not text/email that he did not show up, there was no show, varsity does not want to refund money, they made me get another tutor while i want to cancel membership and get my money back, looking at prior yelp reviews, not good, certainly would not go with this company read more

Deceptive billing and auto renew...poor customer service. We were not done using the 8 sessions we originally paid for before they auto charged me for another 8. When I called, two different representatives refused to refund me or to transfer me to a manager. I will have to call my bank and try to fight against this terrible customer service and unethical company. read more

This is nothing short of scam. I would avoid them at all costs. They scheduled us twice for tutoring and the tutors did not show up. They should not be able to operate. read more

Scam!!! They will not cancel your subscription after the said amount of time and will constantly bug about renewing and subscribing in the beginning. Very unprofessional, teachers don't even show up half the time for the lessons and when they do, only help out with 3 questions and then leave you to suffer. They aren't helpful whatsoever and good luck trying to get help with extra curriculum. read more

Unfortunately my family and I did not have a good experience with Varsity Tutors. We decided to cancel the service after our first month in March and the company decided to start charging us again in June till December. We have made several phone calls in dispute of these charges to get our money back with no luck. We have been speaking with Shanique who is apparently the only person you are aloud to speak with, she has been great and pretty understanding about the situation. This company will rip you off so beware. If you look you at the reviews this company has you'll see other people saying the same thing. Bad business to rip your customers off. read more

Signed up for tutoring to help with test scores. The tutor was helpful and all sessions we signed up for were provided. However, beware of the membership cancellation process. The tutoring service automatically renews each month. The only way to cancel is to call the company and when looking at the website, it barely explains that you MUST CALL to cancel. Once you call, the customer service reps work hard to sell you on additional services, so you have to be firm about cancelling. Overall, the tutor was helpful and knowledgeable, but a big negative is the business practice of making membership cancellation difficult. read more

We had a terrible experience with Varsity Tutors. We were with them for about 4-5 months. In the second month, the tutor that they provided for my daughter decided all of a suddent that she was no longer available to Tutor. So all of those hours that we were supposed to have with her, were lost along with the hundreds of dollars that were paid for the service. They did not provide another tutor for us. That was the 1st red flag. Then, for our last tutoring session, they just cancelled it unilaterally. When I contacted the tutor she was wondering why they cancelled it as well, as she did not receive any notice to that regard. They are very quick to take your money, and provide horrible service. The customer service is just them telling you how great they are. What a terrible experience!! DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!!! read more

First tutoring session with eighth grade daughter, we were disconnected nine times due to technical issues Varsity tutoring was having. Terrible experience for my eighth grade daughter. The tutor was unsatisfactory. Hard to understand and did zero teaching. At the end of the hour, times up hung up. There was no follow up with additional meetings things to prep for for next meeting. Very unsatisfactory. When asked for refund was denied. Terrible communication, bad business. Buyer beware!!! read more

I had talked to them a year ago about tutoring for my son and decided not to use them. They have very aggressive marketing. They called me at 5:53 am this morning on my vacation waking me up to try to sell me their services. I told the lady that it was early in the morning and to take me off her list. She said, "well, we open at 6 am." No apology. Then I got a bunch of other random marketing calls this morning after that including from other educational companies. Did she put me on a list as payback? I have not expressed interest in receiving information from random universities. read more

They misled me to get me to sign up. They told me I would get one on one scheduled private tutoring and I would get instant tutoring in between. That is why I justified spending $350 for 4 hours of Private tutoring. Then I couldn't get a tutor in the session I wanted or got the wrong link to upload my syllabus and called. It turns out that the instant tutoring comes out of the 4 hours of one on one tutoring. This agency is trying to rip you off! It costs less than a third of the price to hire a private tutor. Don't do it! This service is a rip off and they lie to get you to sign up! Beware! read more

They are SCAM artists. They tell you a sales pitch that they cannot back and when you confront them they say that's just how it is tough luck. Poor platform always technical issues. The platform is NOT interactive. Was lied to and they won't refund money! I barely used one session and complained and they still won't refund! Will report to BBB and dispute my charges!!! read more

tried calling asking about pricing. woman was so pushy and honestly rude and dragged the call on for 35 minutes!! i was trying so hard to be nice but that phone call put me off so badly, she wanted to call back tomorrow and said this time she's going to be really pushy... idk how she could possible be more pushy than she already was. honestly had she just told me the price i probably would've signed up but it took her so damn long to get there i wanted to scream by the end.. the phone call just trying to get in was an absolute nightmare i can't imagine being a client and needing to cancel my membership. when the call came to an end she basically asked me to sign up right there and when i told her i was going to continue looking to see what was out there she tried to add stress of me failing if i don't start now i had to tell her 4 times no im not signing up!! my class doesn't even start until mid june. she would not let me hang up, i should've just done it without saying anything but i couldn't get myself to do that. i blocked immediately. my head hurts omg read more

I enrolled my daughter for help on her final exams for college. I have to say that the tutors were great with flexible hours that accommodated her schedule. The complaint that I have is the lack of correct information given by the billing department. They said that I could cancel at any time but did not specify that it had to be by a certain date. When I cancelled after the specific date, I was told that I missed the deadline and was charged $500. I was then told that she had 8 hours that she could use when the semester started back. I was now told that she did not have the hours and they expired. None of that information was relayed to me. So basically they took $500 for no services. This is the reason for the low review. Not reflected on the tutoring. read more

Tutors were horrible, not trained, and unavailable. Nothing like a Nigerian dude from Canada who doesn't have internet and phone to tutor your daughter! But that wasn't even the worst thing. They stick you on a monthly plan even when they promised you they would not. They buried it into the agreement . Then you can never get out! Check their website and click the links. Anything that concerns deleting your account goes in a circle and it won't be allowed. I told them I refused to be on a monthly, we agreed I would pay Ia one time fee of $299 for 4 hrs to see if I liked it. They were horrible so I called and cancelled. Nope-they kept billing. I emailed-Nope they kept billing. I followed crazy instructions with non existent links nut NOPE-still billing. Did what web said and downloaded app. Followed steps to delete and hit send. Once again error messages. THEY WON'T LET YOU CANCEL. They are 100% marketing scam with hundreds of calls from people who set you up....then POOOF, disappear when you are unsatisfied. STAY AWAY!!!! read more

No matter what happens do not give them your phone number. I called them for information on a drawing/art instructor for my son. Totally incompetent on the phone, couldn't figure out if they had someone or not and after 15 minutes of fumbling on the phone I just ended the call politely and hung up. Now comes the harrasment. They call our house every single day through out the day leaving messages, we won't even answer the phone anymore when we see them calling. Yes, we asked them to remove our number but apparently that is outside their skill set, perhaps they should hire a tutor on phone etiquette and customer service. read more

Absolute crooks. Not only did they not have staff that could help with college level courses, they also enrolled me in a subscription and charged me $450 per month for two months before I noticed. Edit I am giving Varsity Tutors more stars due to their customer service I got a full refund and complimentary 1:1 sessions ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have no idea how they get good reviews After discussing my options for learning Excel, I decided to take an online course specifically to learn VLOOKUP and PIVOT tables, and after completing the course if I would need any help to add private sessions. Started the class and I am 2 weeks in - they refuse to let us listen to the recorded sessions for practice with a lame excuse of privacy of students (we all asked for a recording), when I asked too many questions I was threatened to be kicked out of class. During sessions, the instructor offers multiple times a private lesson. Today we learned XLOOKUP a newer version of VLOOKUP, when I asked why we are not learning VLOOKUP I was told to take a private lesson to learn VLOOKUP - that is outrageous !!!! This company is luring students to take private lessons at a mere price of $90 Think very well before taking a class with them !!! read more

well although going through some sudden financial difficulties, I noticed that over 400 dollars was taken from my account, I called customer service who was nice enough to tell me that I was unable to be issued a refund because it was over 24 hour. I received a notification from my bank that I had an overdraft and that my account was below 0. I called varsity tutors right away, as soon as I got the notification which was not 24hrs based off what my bank statement was. I am not pleased with the way that the billing part is handled yes my education is important but when dealing with life some things have to be put on hold, I get 4 whole hours of learning and a whole month and a half of debt that could not be replaced so after this month this platform is a luxury not a necessity when it comes to some subjects. I needed help with a TEAS test exam now I need help on catching up on bills, and have to decide what to do with the last 30 dollars in my pocket get gas or pay part of a bill that was due. its sad that they could not at least issue my refund I had not yet used it was taken out the night before and I called to cancel that morning. as far as the tutors good luck on finding a good one you may go through several and waste valuable time and money to find them. no longer using this platform, not sure how I am supposed to focus on learning when I have bigger issues at hand due to this overdraft. lesson learned. never sign up for a membership or make sure to cancel the same day your sign up so that they wont be able to take anything that you were not prepared for. guess I have to sign up and use these 4 whole hours up hopefully I wont be too bitter to retain anything. good luck to all who use this platform read more

I am finally getting around to writing this review after quite some time. After using varsity tutors for years with my siblings, I will NEVER support them again after they scammed me out of $2000. I took the MCAT and wanted to retake it, and I learned about varsity tutors score guarantee for retakers. After working with a great tutor, I scored the same score on the following test. Upon getting my score, I emailed it to them. I didn't hear back after two weeks so I called, they asked me to resend it and made a note of my scores. Later, I called back and they said I never resent it as I was looking at the email exchange with them. This went back and forth for a few more weeks until Janice told me that the time to submit my scores had passed as they had just received them that day. She even said she had seen the call notes of all the previous time I had called saying I never heard back. I am a broke college student who paid for this service, and they had the audacity to keep dragging me along in this thread of not receiving the score, but they conveniently received it when the window for submitting closed! Janice continued to call and ask if I would like to take the MCAT again using their services. I have told everyone who once used this company to take their money elsewhere and this still makes me sick. read more

Horrible. Do not use them. I signed up for 6 months of tutoring for my son. I NEVER approved auto renewal. After 6 months was still being charged. We never even used any tutoring hours the last few months. I called and spoke to a few different people. I was outraged because they auto renewed and I never wanted it! My contract was for 6 months!! They would not refund me! They are not honest! Double and triple check your contract! They are quick to call you when you want to sign up but are very difficult to get ahold of when they already have your money! read more

Their tutoring efforts were inadequate, did not meet my sons specific needs. Eventually he gave up on them. Then, after that fiasco they quietly charged a ton of money because we did not 'opt out' of their 'service contract'. They essentially charged my credit card a lot of money for no services, and refused to budge. A very poor and costly experience overall. read more

Awful awful awful experience. This place is a scam. I had four weeks left of my very last class before graduating and I needed help with final exams. I was told I could purchase month to month tutoring sessions, without being automatically renewed every month. So I paid for the month-to-month tutoring plan, $600 for one month of tutoring sessions, which was 7 or 8 sessions if I remember correctly. The next month, after graduating may I add, I was charged another $600 for more tutoring sessions that I did not authorize nor did I get the plan with automatic renewal, because logically, why would I when my class was over and I literally graduated...??? I had argue with about five different employees, and they all refused to give me my refund, there was no "upper management" that I could speak to, every time their authority was "in a meeting" some how and I was suggested I call my bank. I was furious, it's a total SCAM. After essentially calling them out for being a scam, I got my refund a week later. Don't waste your money read more

Do not recommend for graduate level test prep. I was first paired with an LSAT tutor who rescheduled and canceled three times on the same day. Not responsive when I asked why and when would work for him. I was told to try the Instant Tutoring feature which just pairs you with a last minute tutor only to be told he doesn't know anything about reading comprehension and it's not his forte and he doesn't want to waste time. Ended session abruptly after 2 minutes. Spoke to customer representative to only be told she can rematch me with someone else, but no refund. Because the tutors have been unresponsive and absolutely clueless on subject material, I lost 2 hours that I did not get to use in the month and the tutoring hours you pay expire after 30 days. I learned my lesson and will be sticking to a company that specifically specializes in LSAT prep and at the bare minimum, does a background check on their tutors to make sure they are competent and qualified on the subject material. read more

Had paid for 6 months of tutoring. Got through a few sessions and then the tutor disappeared and stopped responding. Reached out to customer service who said they'd have our account manager and the regional director call us. Never heard anything. Called again and was assured someone who could authorize a refund would call us within 48 hours. Never heard anything. We paid $1,600 for a professional tutor who could help our child with a learning difference and not only did she not receive that, she now has to start all over again with a new tutor. This company should be ashamed of themselves. read more

We are very satisfied with Varsity Tutors! From the moment I called them to arrange for a math tutor for my son, I could tell I had contacted the right company. Their staff are excellent! UPDATE: EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE. A very nice customer experience manager called me Friday morning, apologized for the misunderstanding, and agreed to issue a refund for the amount I'd paid. She also gave me complimentary credits, which was really gracious of her. I asked for an email confirmation for the refund, which I later received. Refund should be received in 3-5 business days. Currently, their business model does not give clients the freedom to cancel their services on their own. I had to call and speak with 3-4 admins before I was able to cancel my subscription. It's better to ask proactively about payment plans and refund policy for each one. Apparently for some plans, you can get refunded for the credits you don't use, but not for the subscription plans. read more

We called Varsity Tutor on a Sunday, by Tuesday my daughter was in a tutoring session. My daughter has always struggled with math and Varsity Tutor helped my daughter bring up her grade. I would definitely recommend Varsity Tutors and we will be using them in the future if needed. read more

UPDATE: I was finally able to speak to an Account Manager named Summer, who resolved this issue for us and clarified his processing issues on his account. These five stars are for her. I will update for the tutoring service once my brother provides feedback on his experience with the tutor. ORIGINAL 1-Star: We reserved sessions and placed $500+ down payment for tutoring, with an additional $500+ due before the end of March, and the tutor assigned to my brother, Sanaya, cancelled the day prior to his first session because she said she had an exam. My brother, who has a developmental delay, has his courses actively in session, and we bought into this program because he requires additional assistance, and the account rep assured us it would be so easy and that they had only the most professional tutors onboard. I called to have someone discuss this issue with me, and when I checked four hours later they stated that the account manager wrote that they had left a voice message. My mother, my brother and I all checked our phones and we received no phone calls or voice messages. I will be requesting for my money back. read more

Unfortunately, we had a really bad experience with Varsity Tutors. We initially signed up for our daughter, who is in 5th grade, and were excited about getting started. The tutor canceled on us the day before we were supposed to start, and in the meantime, we found somebody here locally that could help us and had more flexible hours. So we called within 7 days of signing up to cancel. Their customer service told us we were fine to cancel and everything was closed. Then we get charged $530. I called about that and were told that the $530 is a non refundable fee because it's a one time sign up fee. So we were charged $530 for never using the service. I understand (now) that that was in their terms and conditions (obviously completely my fault for not reading the fine print), but I think it's pretty crappy that they don't tell you that when you sign up. I'm sure Varsity Tutors is full of good people, but I just think that's a pretty bogus way to do business. read more

We had great hopes for Varsity Tutors. However, these were not realized. It took a week to have the first tutoring session, and the platform did not work as expected and the support group was not able to support us. It also took 3 different tutor assignments, to get a tutor that could work on our schedule and on the topics we were looking for. the first one was a math tutor when we were looking for an english tutor, the second was not available on our schedule, the third, worked ok, but just too low of a level and was not able to teach! In our case the Monthly membership with 8 hours included was almost imposable to use. Our schedule was fairly tight with our daughter in Boarding school. But in the end it was not our schedule that caused the issues... it was the last minute cancelations or reschedules outside of our available times or in one case the tutor just didn't want to do the session as she was too tired and had been working all day. On top of this you don't know when the tutor will accept a future schedule request... many times they wait until a few hours before the session... when you can no longer look for a better solution. Our other Major issue, was that the tutor didn't identify our daughters issues or Areas that needed improvement... we spent just 30 minutes with another tutoring group... and they zeroed in on one of her issues and starting working on it and teaching her about that topic... those 30min have been more productive than the 4.5 hours already consumed in 3 weeks (only 4.5 due to canceled sessions) My Advise, DO NOT sign up for the Monthly schedule (that Auto renews) unless they agree to refund the unused hours. UPDATE: I had a call with the Customer Experience Manager, and they credited some of the wasted time. We also got assigned a Very good tutor on our 4th try... Tutor #4 asked questions, asked to have a call before the session to understand what the goals and area of focus should. When session issues appears they got the tech team involved right away. I hope VT implements some of the changes suggested; Having The Tech Team Schedule on the same platform as the tutors, upgrade the system test to actually test the systems, Set some sort of deadline for tutors to accept or reject sessions so there are no last minute surprises and perhaps for new members give them a few months to get in a groove before hours start expiring. I think if we did not have the time pressure to use or lose the pre-paid value that we would have been more relaxed and understanding when things go wrong. {Added a star} read more

While online tutoring may work for some it did not work for my son. The connectivity issues and screen time were a problem. When we signed up we were told you could cancel within 30'days if not satisfied. You can't cancel on the website. It makes you send an email or call. I sent 5 emails in the days leading up to the trial ending. Then my account was charged again for another 530$. I called and they said there was nothing they could do, And next week sometime they would have someone else call or I could send another unanswered email. He only used 3.5 hours of the 8 hours because of challenges scheduling. I am so frustrated by the company and their customer service. read more
