This gem in North Kansas City has been in the area for 7 years. I have driven by hundreds of times…read morehaving lived downtown for 14 years and I never knew it was a liquor store-bar. The ambience is clean neat and not over crowded considering it is a bar in a liquor store. When I say liquor store I mean they carry mid to high end liquor with the unique ingredients that make your cocktail a tasteful event. You definitely will not find anything basic here. If you are a big mixology fan this is your place to taste something unique and different and the best part is the ingredients are on their shelf to buy. We sampled the fall menu with our group of 4 each ordering two different drinks each and sharing to taste. The bartender (so sorry I forgot his name) was very friendly, knowledgeable and engaging with us. Just a side note- they don't serve food however two tables bright food in so that is a great option. If you are looking for a different option and experience this is definitely a place to check out. Note- they will be changing to their winter cocktail menu soon. They will be featuring "warm drinks ". If warm drinks are not your thing there is always the basic drink options as well. I love tasting so I and absolutely coming back to try the Winter menu. For those interested in Amaro liquor the serve flights so you can truly get the scope and find your preferred flavor profiles. They are not on the menu but you only need to ask the bartender and they will help set you on your journey. Last note- the prices are mid range better than most for a great cocktail. Cheers!

It was Tiki night but with a head cold I stayed away from the sweet drinks. Had a Toronto per recommendation from the bartender and it was top notch!! Second round was well Four Roses and he didn't seem to mind my audible on the recipe. Asked for half the simple syrup and chocolate walnut bitters vs the aromatic. This was quite possibly the best old fashioned I've had. Wish it was closer to home but I will be back!!.

We went for later lunch and this place was crowded with diners, always a good sign. The lunch restaurant week menu really intrigued me because it was one of the 3 course options for $20. First course- luscious butternut squash soup One of my all time favorite soups and this one didn't disappoint, I love the autumnal flavors of this soup. The nuttiness shined through the silky smooth soup filled with the richness of cream. It was seasoned wonderfully balancing the inherent sweetness with the right amount of salt and herbs. I would drink this soup up by the gallon. Second course- Classic Chicken Picatta I loved how light this dish was, instead of being breaded it was tender moist chicken, yes it may look a little anemic but it wasn't lacking flavor. The bright lemon caper sauce brought like to the chicken. The abundance of capers made me so happy, they provided a tangy briny profile. The smooth as butter mashed potatoes just soaked up that succulent sauce and every bite had such a luscious mouth feel. This was an elevated comfort dish. Dessert- crème brûlée Now I'm not a dessert girl so I'm not a crème brûlée connoisseur but, it had a nice crackly sugar shell with a decadent eggy custard. The ripe berries were simple but added freshness to richness of the custard.

Odd. We appreciated the heads up however, I feel like they were really wanting us to turn around and leave as the restaurant seemed overwhelmed. We stayed as it was too late in day to go elsewhere. The kitchen was indeed backed up, no silverware provided had to ask, and our server said to order right away if we wanted to get our food. They were out of some items. Took 45 minutes for food to arrive. However, the staff was apologetic, even though it took awhile to be served the meal itself was acceptable --the pork chop, surf and turf, braised meat, and pizza were all hits. Server had to confirm with kitchen if they were still serving dessert, we were able to order. The desserts consisted of banana coconut pie which basically pudding & bananas in a bowl, tiramisu, and Keylime, all were just okay not worth $. The patio is beautiful and perfect for a nice day. It is very expensive, so we'll save it for special personal occasions not a national holiday/special day, but the food quality makes it worth a return visit.

We joined in their Pop Culture Trivia night and it was a sort or mashup of bingo and trivia. For instance, a short trailer of a movie, and if you recognized it on your board, you mark it off. The topics were all over the place, with one being Catherine O'Hara films (RIP), together with modern slow folk music, and mockumentaries. OK! Could be cool to have a round of just 90's hits, or 80's movies, etc. If you're one of the very select few to win, you take home... an old VHS tape. Funny, but I would probably "accidentally forget" mine on the bar table had I won. It would be kinda fun if they threw in a free drink or something to make it worth it. The final prize was a few comp tickets to Screenland Armour upstairs, which they are connected to. The hosts were both friendly, and the vibes of the place are good. Overall just a fun, throwback place where you don't have to shout over anyone to talk. Highly recommend!

That changed yesterday, when Diana Condori, the bar manager, was named a 2026 James Beard Outstanding Professional in Cocktail Service semifinalist. As we love supporting restaurants and bars that receive that kind of recognition, my wife and I headed to Fern Bar that evening. I was especially curious what exactly a "sugarcane and agave bar" meant. We arrived around 5:30pm and found only a handful of guests inside. After congratulating the bartender who first served us, he mentioned that Diana was working that night and would stop by to meet us. During our conversation, Diana shared that she didn't even know she had been nominated. She woke up Tuesday to a call from owner Bryan Arri, who said he had big news and was coming over. Her first thought was that something terrible had happened--like the bar had burned down. Instead, he showed up with coffee and told her she was a James Beard honoree. Diana is originally from Bolivia and has lived in Kansas City most of her life, with the exception of time spent in San Francisco during the pandemic. She further refined her cocktail craft through local pop-ups in Kansas City under the name Condor's Cove. When Bryan was preparing to open Fern Bar, he reached out to bring her onto the team. The printed cocktail menu immediately reminded me of the Monarch and the Mercury Room--not surprising given Bryan's background at Manifesto and the Monarch. Thoughtful, intentional, and clearly designed for people who appreciate serious cocktails. We planned on having one or two drinks but ended up staying for three, thanks to an outstanding lineup and a memorable conversation with Diana. We tasted: * No Fly Zone - Rum, agave, pineapple foam * Mr. Collage - Smooth, elegant, egg-white cocktail * Three Negroni Lunch - Bitter, boozy, and beautifully balanced * Pendergast No. 4 - Complex and spirit-driven * It's Bananas - Banana liqueur with bright tropical notes * Off the Rails - Creative and well-executed rum/agave cocktail One downside of many cocktail-forward bars is the lack of food, but Fern Bar offers two varieties of mini burritos for $4--just enough protein to keep things balanced while indulging. Great concept, exceptional service, and truly memorable drinks. Check it out--and be sure to say hello to Diana.
