Good, fast Mexican food. Think Chipotle style ordering but actual authentic Mexican cuisine. We found them by accident and we're so happy we didn't have to fight Madison traffic to get into downtown and deal with the craziness. Forgot to get pics of the food but will come back!

    Pinto Beans

We decided to check out Vaquero Mexican Grill after reading all the five-star reviews about the authenticity of the food, but I suppose those reviews are on what you choose for your meal. I chose my standard chicken tacos with pinto beans, and my husband had a burrito. I was disappointed in the chicken, as it was smally cubed, with no seasoning and it was very dry. All toppings were standard, but you could choose to put as many on your taco as you wanted. The sauce was good, but they only put about a teaspoon on. My pinto beans were tasteless, and they were dry, most likely overcooked. They did give me a lot of beans. My husband made a mammoth burrito, and I was surprised at how much they allowed him to put on it. He stated it tasted like any other burrito he has had at one of the chain restaurants. I have had authentic Mexican food in Chicago, and Vaquero does not even come close to it. Someone had stated that they make their own corn tortillas, but in our experience, they were taken out of a brand name bag. The only thing they do is press them to heat them up before applying your choice of toppings. If they made them from scratch before, they aren't doing it now. The interior had a nice ambience, and it was very clean. For the amount of food you received, it was not very expensive. It was a bit hard to hear each other talk as the music was too loud. We will probably visit again, be more adventurous, and try out a few different items on the menu, before making a final decision if we will frequent this establishment.

The food was DELICIOUS and very reasonably priced. A great local alternative to chipotle or qdoba.

Service is very casual here but food is good and authentic! They have 10 kinds of salsa and they are ranked according to the heat.

Gotta say, this was the best breakfast i may have had prepared for me. We each had a skillet. I went for the black bean one. With the house potatoes. I cleaned my plate! Excellent cup of coffee. Fantastic mimosa. We got to try a Swedish pancake and i gotta say, next visit is going to be a tough decision. Super friendly and personable staff. Looking forward to many more meals. There was this green cream sauce i saw given to our neighbors table. It's the made with love heartbeat here. Thank you for what you do for our appetites! Cheers to your next four years

The cucumber jalapeño is one of the best margaritas I've had. Perfect amount of spice, sweetness, and refreshment! I also tried the hibiscus margarita which is on the sweeter side. For my entree I got the black and blue salad, which was a nice big portion with delicious steak and jumbo shrimp. My boyfriend's fish fry was also delicious with fresh lightly battered fish. Though service was on the slower side this evening because of the crowds, they are always super nice here! It's a nice local option with no frills but excellent food and drinks overall.
