Usually reliable shaved ice spot in dun Huang plaza at Bellaire Chinatown…read more Food:5/5. Aesthetic pile of shaved ice, comes with one or two toppings and a drizzle depending on your size choice. 4/5 average value Service: 3/5. Not too important since it's not a fancy restaurant. However, the last time we went, it was cash only, and they had limited change in the register. You fill out a sheet with your shaved ice order and bring it to the front. Ambiance: 3/5. Not too crazy, there's a long bench in the middle and more tables on either side. Standard noise levels

It's always soooo dirty whenever we come. We brought family and it was just so gross. Everyone was using some spray cleaner we found on the counter to clean their own tables, and sometimes I don't want to be doing that when I come get dessert. Why are we cleaning and scrubbing down our seats before we sit??? Please Nu owners if you're reading this- I don't want the tables to be sticky anymore your desserts are so good but it's getting to the point where I want to go somewhere else because the inside is just sooooo dirty. Please!!! Maybe just start using disposable bowls for your dine in desserts as well? It's cleaner, and we don't have to stack dirty plates in a tub over the trash can. Idk just my thought process but still love the dessert.

If you're a HOG (Houston Original Gangsta), you know Star Snow is one of OG places in Chinatown off…read moreBellaire, previously known for boba, and now it's got awesome food as well. It still has that "hole in the wall" vibe, and it's a pretty small footprint though they somehow pack a ton of 2 seaters and 4 seater tables in there so there's actually a decent amount of seats. Lots of takeout business too. Now I hadn't been in a while, and for my recent visit, they had installed large electronic kiosks so you can order and pay without any human interaction. They also bring your food to you (I remember going to a counter to pick it up). Star Snow has gotten fancy! And the prices have definitely gone up but it's still relatively affordable. Now, you're probably thinking "blah blah blah what about the actual food?" Well, it's great. Delicious. The beef noodle soup is one of best you'll ever have (comparable to Noodle Kitchen in Spring, TX and Shang's in Las Vegas), and the fried tofu appetizer is spectacular. Warning: it comes out HOT so give it a minute unless you enjoy burning the inside of your mouth. I loved every bite of both dishes and I would order them again. And again. And again. So what are the downsides? Again, if you're a HOG, you know - it's the Dun Huang center parking. So packed. The center has so much good food and drink options. Just bite the bullet and head towards the garage and park on the roof. That's what I did because I had no choice on a Saturday for lunch. And once you're done, don't head back towards Bellaire (it will take you 10 min just to leave the lot). Sneak out onto the Beltway feeder. That's my pro tip for ya. Lastly, I'm not sure exactly how long this location has been open, but I know it's at least 18 years based on the oldest Yelp Review. When a restaurant survives for that long in the Dun Huang center, you know it's legit.

Perfectly ok to take to go and reheat (except the squid, it gets tough). Smoothies are great, with modifiable sugar and ice content. Complimentary hot tea is available. Value: 5/5. Portions are very nice, while still being finishable. All the food and drink pictures came out to about $30 total. Ambiance: 3/5, not very important since it's a simple, quick sit down place to eat. Average noise level. Parking: 4/5 dependent on what day and time of day you go. It's in dun Huang plaza so there's a big lot, but you're going to be scrambling for a spot if you try coming on a weekend evening due to the overall business of this area. Service: 4/5. They are fast. No waiters/waitresses, you go up to the counter to get your drink, and a busser will typically bring your food. Fast is all that matters.

All the hotdogs on the menu are $8 each except the French Dip $9 and the Carolina $10. When making it a combo (add FF and a drink) add $7 more. My total was $23 for 2 hotdogs, a drink and a FF. The NYC had onions and sauerkraut, the Local had blended queso w/ground beef. The Philly has peppers, onions and provolone, and the Chicago had veggies. All the dogs tasted good cuz they're Nathan's, the bread used was fresh, FF were tasty, the wieners could be hotter (temperature wise) upon serving. And there could be more ground beef in the queso on the Local dog. The sodas have the good ice...soft airy crunchy. The menu offers other items, chicken tenders, sliders, grilled cheese, frito pie, salads, deviled eggs, fried cheese curds, fried pickles, etc They have several beer choices, frose', wine and frozen margaritas (made with wine) Connected to restaurant is their snow cone place. What a gloomy day that wanted to be rainy but couldn't quite make the cut. What to do to bring…read morespirits up and sunshine (mental anyway) in? We decided on a trip to Local Dogs. I'm sort of embarrassed to admit we hadn't been. We watched Ashley and Michael Cordray transform a vintage filling station into a restaurant on Restoring Galveston and thought that they did an excellent job of it. But a hot dog, kid/family restaurant? Not really our vibe, or so I thought. Then I looked at the menu, read some reviews, and considered the importance of supporting local and trying something new. I mean, why not? Azar (my niece), Dan (my partner in dine), and I agreed on a dog day afternoon. Overall, we all agreed it was a good call. Azar: the Philly, fried okra, and a dirty Dr Pepper Dan: the Chicago with a veggie dog, fries, and a cherry Pepsi Yours truly: an NYC with a veggie dog, cheese curds, and Freakshow chardonnay in a very attractive can The verdict? Across the board, very positive. The only, and I mean the only, thing that was a bit of a miss was the veggie dog, and honestly I was not surprised. Veggie is not easy to pull off. Dan and I do not eat mammal so we were delighted that Local Dogs offered this option. We have had a lot of luck with Impossible meats. I don't know what this one was. It was okay, but texturally and flavor wise, it was a little off. Certainly edible, but not quite there. Everything else hit the spot. High notes: the okra! After a very light dusting of salt, it became the star of the show. So good! The fries were everything fries should aspire to be. Not hard, not soggy, but just right. Azar's dirty Dr Pepper had her smiling. The takeaway? We will definitely be back, rain or shine. The layout is inviting and comfortable, and the service was friendly. I think local, and visiting dogs, would really enjoy the patio area, too. Kudos to the Cordrays!

The shaved ice itself was really nice and fluffy, with the condensed milk topping being VERY sweet yet not overpowering. The fruit toppings we got, for the most part, were good. The pineapple and cantaloupe were both okay, though I think they both could've been fresher, but the strawberry and mango were both really good and complemented the shaved ice. I also really enjoyed the strawberry ice cream on top. I was a bit skeptical at first, but it added another dimension to the dish. The coconut pudding, though, was quite disappointing, not tasting like much and overall just feeling like a random and unnecessary addition to the otherwise really good dessert. The ambiance here was the main issue. It is a little bit barebones and not very decorated, but that didn't bother me. What did though was the piercing high pitched noise of the electronics, which made it really hard for me to focus, and the flashing lights, which just made me feel really disoriented. Still, this place is a hidden gem in the Dun Huang Plaza compared to everything else around it, and is definitely worth a try!
