Watching my 25year old Pilot FlyAway. Been patronizing the Public Observation area for 30 years. Have seen it undergo a significant and wonderful transformation. It is now perfect for families, children's play area, plane/pilot enthusiasts, have a lil picnic too. Great spot! Our son had to visit the observation area every day and this is the truth! read more

20 miles north of LAX, one of the world's busiest general aviation airports, mainly for noncommercial air travel, has two parallel runways. The main runway is 8,000 feet in length and the training runway is 4,000 feet long. Easy to get in and out. read more

The Valley would be a peaceful place without VNY. We have noisy jets taking off and landing at all hours of the day and night. There is no respect for the curfew. Before you say "the airport has been here longer than you," let me say that my family has lived in this area since before the airport was built. Yes, we go back that far. And don't bother mentioning how many jobs depend on VNY. You might as well be talking about the drug cartel. As I write this, it is 5pm on a Sunday afternoon. There are jets coming in over Sherman Oaks and Encino every 10 minutes. The airport is a blight on the Valley. read more

I don't want a car or an SUV, but a Van would be Nice, such as a van from Van Nice Airport. I've only used this airport as a passenger once recently, although I often came here to catch the bus to LAX when I lived in the San Fernando Valley. It's more of a private airport for charters and famous and rich people, to be honest. I know a few of them, but they don't often ask me to fly with them, so... If you take the tour of the airport you will see a lot of famous old aircraft as well as celebrity aircraft. They will tell you that it's the busiest airport in the world, but they mean a general use public airport, which doesn't include any of the major domestic and international airports. Still, that is quite a feat and shows how many hobby flyers there are in Southern California. It's also fun watching the little planes taking off and landing here. Definitely one of the highlights of Van Nuys and the middle part of the Valley, and there are a couple of great Mexican restaurants across the street from the main entrance. read more

Of course they fly over your house, there's a fucking airport in Lake Balboa, people should know this when buying a house in Lake balboa, specially down the street from the airport. My mom owns 20 acres around the area and let me just say it's the best neighborhood in the whole valley, it's quiet, not the airport but the neighborhood itself is quiet, and it's beautiful!!! read more

Our toddler loves to watch the planes in the viewing area. We wave at the pilots, who often wave back!! Access the viewing area from Woodley Blvd, the entrance is driveway immediately south of the firehouse, just drive all the way to the end. The Van Nuys airport is a public airport located in the San Fernando Valley running parallel, just to the West of the 405 Freeway. This is a very busy airport and is one of the busiest general aviation airports in the world. According to their website it handles over 400,000 aircraft movements a year which works out to about 1200 flight operations a day. That is a lot of take-offs and landings. The Los Angeles Fire Department has their aviation assets stationed here as well as most of the local TV stations' helicopter fleets. I am here on business weekly and sometimes daily and enjoy this airport and its two parallel runways. This airport is also home to the commercial Fly Away terminal just East on Woodley Blvd. If you live in the SFV or North and you are flying out of LAX, You can park here ($4 a day, verses $12 at LAX) and take the bus direct to LAX for $8. This is a real bargain and should be explored as an option as LAX Parking lot C is $12 a day. So for any trip over two days this is a bargain. Up until 2006 this was the home of the Van Nuys Air Show, which ran annually for 43 years. I for one want to see this air show return and miss it dearly. read more

I moved to Sherman Oaks in 2015. I barely heard any audible planes until approximately 8 months ago. A plane every evening is SO LOW that it sounds as if it's going to crash into our area. I can identify it in the air as being less than 100 meters in height--this would be appropriate if 1 mile from Van Nuys Airport, but this is more than 1 mile. The planes are so low that tenants of my building, as well as neighboring buildings, run out on their balconies thinking it's going to be a potential crash. I personally don't care about the noise. I sleep through it. I am literally only writing this review for future investigators because I believe there will be an "accident" at some point. read more

We keep our plane here, yet somehow we always blank out for a minute or two with what hanger we keep it at. Very secure. The planes are kept in gooood condition, at least at the hanger we use! You drive up to the company your plane is kept at, punch in to the security and they open the gate for you, drive righttt up to the plane and hop on. They park your car nearby. 30 seconds from the plane starting up to being in the air!! read more

Alrighty then....how many opportunities do you get to have a chance to ride a private jet to Jackson Hole Wyoming? I did, and man, what a ride! Pull up in a suv, right onto the field, greeted with red carpet, dogs, passenger loaded on board, where they had prepared caviar, and some veggie samplers to munch on + premium booze! After trying to wobble my way from the bathroom, I managed to talk to the pilots and sit in one of the chairs as the other copilot went to use the restroom. Landed without a hitch and greeted again with the rental car waiting and red carpet....off to the Million Dollar Bar and to oblivion I went! read more

I came to Van Nuys airport just for their observation area off of Woodley Ave at the end of Waterman Drive. I wanted to spend a few hours just idly watching some plane take offs and landings. Van Nuys has a nice spot for it. Waterman Drive is a bit hard to find off of Woodley Ave, it's a very small street and I missed it at first. You drive all the way to the end where there's a small enclosed parking lot with about 12-14 spaces. It's easy to roll your car up and park. There's a picnic styled area on the far side that has benches to sit on. Little did I realize how incredible BUSY this airport is! There is lots of activity here in terms of landings and take offs. There is one happening ever 30-45 seconds it feels like. Lots of different planes to observe too, from little Cessna's to private jet planes. I even saw a few helicopters which is fascinating as well. Highly recommended if you're a fan of watching planes and have some time to relax! read more

If only I had my own plane I'd probably see this airport a lot more. Sadly, I don't. My boss took me flying one day (we ditched work!) and left from this airport. It was like coming to a baby Burbank Airport. Except there were no people, no cars, a few planes parked, and the parking lot was empty. LOVE IT. If only I had my own plane... read more

Van Nuys Airport - My view from the cessna overlooking Ventura - Airports Near Me - Van Nuys, California

Haven't flown in or out of VNY. But been there once or twice to watch the planes taking-off and landing. Van Nuys is one of the bigger and more populated GA airports in the LA area due two to runways (1 for GA and 1 for turboprops/jets. VNY gets anything from little Cessnas to Boeing 727 and 737, Embreaer ERJ-190s to military. Pros- See planes that you usually can't see/find at other nearby airports (either banned, or don't want to deal with international airports), observation deck is near the runway (but not as close as SMO), little kids area, and a few benches. Cons- The fence is SO tall. read more

Unfortunately KVNY has changed. Became very corporate and pricing common pilots and prop planes out.

Whether you're looking to do some plane watching or learn how to fly, Van Nuys is one of the most interesting airports to visit. With high amounts of general aviation and business jets coming and going, you're always bound to see something you'll like. Plus, there are great viewing areas that will allow you to get pretty close for photos and views of the aircraft. Occasionally, you may even catch military planes and vintage planes and celebrity sightings are not that uncommon (Tom Cruise, Harrison Ford etc...). I got my private pilot certificate here and I wouldn't have got it anywhere else. The diversity of the traffic will make you a better pilot and is also fun to be around. read more

One of the LA treasures that deserves to have its accolades rung throughout the city. Look for their summer camp soon. Enjoy the Airtel Hotel and the 94th Aero Squadron restaurant. It's the tiniest random airport located right here in Van Nuys. There's plenty going on at this port, from secret night landings of the San Diego Chargers plane (hmmmm), to Larry Flint's plane taking off once in a while. Once in a while they'll be jets and cool helicopters, but all in all, its a small plane gathering. There are places around the flight line you can bring your kids to watch the planes take off. I have fond memories of this place from many years ago. We used to stop at the Western Bagel factory located on Sepulveda in Van Nuys early in the morning, and sit and watch avid Motor RC plane and helicopter fanatics fly their gems in the air one at a time just off the airport. We had a blast watching and sat there for hours! It was fun for all ages and lots of families joined in. I'm not sure if they still have people flying their RC planes/helicopters, but it sure just brought back great memories when i passed Van Nuys Airport. read more
