I recently went to Van Eaton Galleries to check out their current location in Studio City. The space is much bigger than that of their previous location in Sherman Oaks. I like that the current spot accomodates many more items. I was satisfied with my visit. The staff were friendly and I loved seeing what items were for sale and auction at the time. I ended up purchasing a layout drawing for Aaahh!!! Real Monsters.

(Attended 03/15/14 SA & 11/29/14 SA @ 1:00pm): A non-descript storefront hidden among restaurants and music stores, but well worth seeking out! If it weren't for a friend, Stephen Sandoval, who had pieces of art in two recent showcases at the Van Eaton Galleries, I probably wouldn't have known about this place. With its close proximity to the animation studios in Burbank and Hollywood, this gallery mostly catered to such artwork and often held exhibits and showcases throughout the year. Here were snapshots of some of my favorites from aforementioned exhibits that included drawings, mixed media, paintings and more. If you saw something you liked, please feel free to contact the gallery and inquiry within: WHEN GOOD TOONS GO BAD: VILLIANS OF ANIMATION - 11/29/14 ~"The Evil Queen At Home" (Chad Lenzi): http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&select=vIAQJ3raWcGRCKyC1ZCBsQ ~"Hag" (Javier Soto): http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&select=qy6GSiLW5yUdntCMwsqerQ ~"Angel Of Mercy" (Bryan "Mutie" Cunningham): http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&select=J0CGkwCSW8oEiswPrpEFvA ~"How To Make Cartoons" (Gavin Freitas): http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&select=oJqDMfXWAP7SEaWfCVtsqA ~"Feathers McGraw" (Tim Spain): http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&select=xF1n3eVOMVoipYlih1Nzmg MOOSYVANIA: A GROUP ART SHOW TRIBUTE TO JAY WARD - 03/15/14 ~"Quazy Energy" (Stephen Sandoval): http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&select=oqH9WgC7JKI01fbNUGgiQQ ~"Super Sauce" (Lee Petty): http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&select=Mb2sbi96ac4OM1EOG7G8tA ~"Drink'n At The Bull Winkaki" (Gary Clair): http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&select=2YsORjtuyXd2sRWInkIznA ~"Snidely And The Do-Wrongs" (Aidan Casserly): http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&select=fP1w8-3iVnl8CORFmbwlpg Service - Each time I attended, a very kind shaven-head gentleman (Gabriel?) was there to answer any questions I had. Extremely informative about the exhibits as well as the other artwork they had available for sale, he and I struck-up long conversations that ranged from art, artists, travel and football (no one else was there during these times). And, if there was a particular animation piece (i.e. character, movie, show, etc.), they had the ability to at least research your request. Plus, they also purchased artwork if there was a demand for what you had (no idea on purchase percentage). Easy peasy. Parking (Free) - They had a small four-spot parking lot in the back http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw. Otherwise, there was plenty of metered street parking along the main drag of Ventura Blvd. and all nearby side streets. Atmosphere, décor, ambience - A simple businessfront with two viewing sections surrounded by decent eggshell-colored wall space where all of the art pieces were hung http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&select=hGJ_uUlkS7JBto99-_MdqA. There were also a couple glass case displays and a few moveable shelvings that held animation that was for sale http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&select=YpzW1u70qEeufBYPM8zz2w. No tables or chairs to sit on, and although natural lighting came through the large front windows there was also plenty of electric lighting that came from the ceiling. A truly rudimentary plot of viewing square footage. There were no TVs nor background music. Attire - Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. Overall, the Van Eaton Galleries was a pleasant find in the San Fernando Valley...but with all the creative types in the area it shouldn't have been much of a surprise. Not at all a fancy gallery so best to have kept any expectations low. The service alone was incredible, and if you're at all an animation fan as I was, it'd be best to stop by and give them a try. There were a few Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge pieces I wouldv'e loved to had, and the prices seemed fair and at market value! I found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (total paid experience was around $0.00; no tip required). And, although I didn't purchase anything, they accepted my credit card of choice...AMEX! 4.0 STARS

I knew I needed something outside of the house that would allow me to focus and have a mental break from the demands of my new life with a baby. From the first class, I painted something I wanted to hang on my wall. Susan's style is unstructured in the sense that there is not a formal topic presented every week. But she takes time with each student during the course of the class so her instruction is extremely customized and individually tailored to each person. She also knows when a student is getting stuck and encourages us to keep going even if we aren't sure about what we are doing. She always says, "oil is very forgiving," and "you can't mess it up." She does stress the importance of the initial drawing and encourages us to follow the same process with each new painting from priming the canvas to completing the drawing in charcoal. Over the last several months, I have seen new students start who, like me, have never picked up a paint brush. Everyone becomes an artist with Susan's encouragement and help. This class is also a lovely community - we all encourage each other and get excited when someone completes a work. I can't imagine starting my Saturday without this class.

We also had a historic California state flag framed and the outcome was incredible. We had no idea how to go about framing a flag since it needs adhesive to be held in place. She took care of everything. Regarding pricing, we did the framing almost two years ago and I neither recall it being expensive nor cheap. In all honesty though, the framing came out so immaculate that we were happy to pay for the quality. Not sure why it took us this long to write a review but just wanted to make this place known since it's a real gem in Studio City.

Let's face the reality: you should be proud of your partner's achievements. I'm my boyfriend's biggest fan whether it is of his highly-acheived career in the film industry as a Set Dresser or of his extremely talented drawing/illustrating skills (he has been featured in movies and TV). What does any of this lovey-dovey crap have to do with 800 Gallery? Don't fret my fellow-Yelpers, I was just getting to that! 800 Gallery is one of the many art galleries located in the NoHo Arts District. What makes this gallery stand out amongst its peers? Instead of just being an art gallery which features art shows and exhibits by artists based on a theme or contest; Gallery 800 has a catch: all of the artist exhibitors are members of the Art Directors Guild IATSE 800 (get it? Gallery 800? The union number of 800?). It is a wonderful way for members of the film and TV industry whom work behind the cameras to showcase their artistic flair and aptitude. Gallery 800 not only hosts exhibitions and receptions; but it works in conjunction with the Local 800 to convert Tuesday nights into an artistic and stress relief by offering drawing workshops at the nearby Local 800 building on Ventura Blvd in Studio City. For $10/night, entertainment industry professionals (or not. You DON'T have to be the member of any union. You can be Joe Schmo off the street); can spend a couple hours fine-tuning their drawing/illustrating skills while also sharing and networking with others. As for the receptions at 800 Gallery, they don't have the usual stuck-up and pretentious quality to them. I attend many art events and this was one of the first times that it felt like everyone was actually flowing with creativity versus just a supposed supporter of art AKA rich snob. Gallery 800 is retaining art at its best. Plus, with yummy refreshments (chips & salsa, veggie platters, cookies, donation-only wine/beer/soda bar), your tummy will be pleased too. If you see the gallery curator Denis Olsen, feel free to ask him questions. He is very knowledgeable. Whether you are in the entertainment industry or not, Gallery 800 stands out amongst the art gallery crowd. Call it a themed gallery or just call it a creative hub, you will be happy to simply call it at all.
