Situated on busy Ventura Blvd, if you are a Disney fan - this is a must! Their collection of old and even new Disney items is immense with prices from afforable to OMG - something for everyone. My friend was in the hunt for a specific figurine - the staff was so helpful in answering questions and giving advice on the best time to see new items in the store. For me, i just enjoyed walking around and seeing all the treasures old and new. I stroll around this area of Ventura Blvd. in Studio City and noticed Van Eaton Galleries for a while, never had a chance to check it out till recently. It is located in the old Pier 1 space, the place is big, well lit, a small museum of memorabilia, especially animation, a nice gallery and auction house. They have the catalogue on line as well. It is free to visit and there are several rooms to explore and browse, lots of cool items on display: posters, big props, toys, photos, animation sheets, press kits and so on. There are some non-animation film related items as well, from the James Bond series for example. They have an exhibit till the end of June and they also showcase other artists' work from the entertainment world. Nice staff, it is closed on Sunday. Lots of film history in here, if you are looking for some collectibles, artwork for your wall, some items are in the 200-300 range, some more as you can imagine. I recently went to Van Eaton Galleries to check out their current location in Studio City. The space is much bigger than that of their previous location in Sherman Oaks. I like that the current spot accomodates many more items. I was satisfied with my visit. The staff were friendly and I loved seeing what items were for sale and auction at the time. Imagine if the sword of Excalibur, was owned by King Arthur's boss, who relied on King Arthur to get the sword, but his boss was too incompetent to realize what they were dealing with. That's how it felt at Van Eaton: great friendly staff, but they're powerless to stop the higher ups at the company from mismanaging this business into the ground. I bought a piece of original art. It wasn't cheap. Since I wanted to return to pick it up when I had space in my car (and in my house!), I had them set it to the side for me. When I came to return it, someone from the Van Eaton family (I believe it was Mike Van Eaton) couldn't find it. In fact, I ended up finding it BACK ON THE SALES FLOOR. Then, he was adamant I hadn't purchased the piece, until I pulled out my receipt. Then he was skeptical, until I pulled out a photograph I had taken, and described the previous wear and tear on the piece. So: I paid a premium price, for a piece of art, which the owners couldn't confirm I had purchased, so I had to use MY CURATION SKILLS to prove I did. Very unprofessional. If I hadn't come in to pick up the item, which was one of a kind, would I even have what I paid for? read more

Got lucky and came here on the last day of the free exhibition on Sunday July 16, 2023 and loved to see all the vintage and classic Disney exhibits that gave D23 vibes! The only thing I felt like they could improve on was the attitude of the Security Guard who noticed that one of my friends put her water bottle down when we were taking a picture together by the sign in the front entrance. We have been walking around inside the exhibit for almost an hour already and we were just about to head out after taking that picture when the security guard violently threw away my friend's water bottle away outside the door without letting us know that she will be doing so. My friend is pre-diabetic, so she needed her water to keep her hydrated. She never hid the water as she was carrying it while we were walking around and no one had mentioned anything when we were inside. It wasn't very Disney for the security guard to just violently throw away her water bottle like that when she could've just politely told us that it wasn't allowed inside and we would've left with the water bottle or just understood and thrown it away ourselves. It was a very shocking and upsetting situation that kind of ruined our good experience there. Hopefully things improve next time. read more

Not at all a fancy gallery so best to have kept any expectations low. The service alone was incredible, and if you're at all an animation fan as I was, it'd be best to stop by and give them a try. One of the most unique experiences of my entire life - to walk into Van Eaton is to be overwhelmingly surrounded by absolutely stunning, priceless works of art created by the insanely talented Disney artists of the 20th century. Even that feels like an understatement. I've been to every major art museum in the United States and this collection is by far the most inspiring - you can really feel the care and passion Walt and the artists had in making these animated films. If I were visiting Los Angeles I would absolutely put this gallery at the very top of the list - above LACMA, above the Getty, above Disneyland itself. read more

Great stock, nice folks, they pack things nicely and are both kind and knowledgeable. I've waited over two weeks since the incident described below to post this review. The people who run Van Eaton Gallery are not bad actors but I think this incident needs to see the light of day. In summary, Van Eaton Gallery (essentially by their own admission) just doesn't know how to run a modern, online supported auction. I received notification of an auction of Disney memorabilia to be conducted by Van Eaton. I was interested in one item in particular. Upon receipt of the auction notice, I went online to place a bid on that item, one week ahead of the live auction date. The first sign of trouble... the Gallery uses two separate online bidding tools, neither of which communicates bid information (dates of competing bids and bid amounts) to the other. As crazy as it may seem, if you are bidding on one of their online sites you (and apparently the Gallery) are unaware of bidding that may be taking place on the other online site. Go figure. After placing my online bid, on several occasions leading up to the live auction (and right up to hours before the start of the live auction), I received multiple email confirmations that I was the high bidder. Not satisfied with those confirmations, in an effort to further protect my bid, I attended the live auction. I introduced myself to multiple members of the Gallery's auction staff and informed them all of the item I was interested in and had placed a bid on. In person and just moments before the start of the live auction, Gallery staff reconfirmed my lead bid status. During the live auction, there was no other bidding on the item. So you can imagine my surprise when I got home to find an email from the Gallery informing me that I had been outbid by an identical bid (not even a higher bid) allegedly placed online (with the other online bidding tool employed by the Gallery) prior to my bid! After reviewing with Gallery staff, in much more detail that provided in this review, all of the facts, every proffered explanation by the Gallery as to the nature and existence of this mystery bid was factually incorrect. This is not only an affront to me as a bidder who expects a fair and open auction but should be of concern to anyone considering consigning items to the Gallery. The Gallery's processes simply eliminate the ability to have a fair and open auction, to the detriment of both buyers and consignors. (Clearly had I known of a competitive bid, I would have bid higher and so might the other bidder. The essence of an auction.) I am also concerned that something else might be afoot here. The Gallery made it very clear to me that the 'other' bidder was a well known customer of the Gallery. (In contrast, I was bidding with Van Eaton for the first time.) Could it be that the Gallery always intended for this item to be 'directed' to its more valued customer? Let's leave it at that and let the reader draw his/her own conclusion(s). Until Van Eaton rights the ship, my advice is to steer clear. There are other places to find Disney memorabilia. read more

I came here not to long ago trying to sell one of my animation art piece and left unsatisfied so note:They're mainly interested in animation art and they don't just buy ANYTHING and I thought I had something good. The only thing the lady that worked in the front could say was " mikes not here so you have to wait for him to be back" so you should call ahead of time if you're just going to walk in here.... Couldn't answer a question about the piece for me without him... Not a single thing about my piece..
