This is an excellent company and I'm so happy with my decision. Let me start by saying this is the first time I've hired a muralist and I am also a first time father. This was important to me. Jeanine took the time to listen to what I was looking for and suggested a few things to help grow my idea. I loved that. She came over and was so kind and really took time to understand this was more than just a job; this was something my kid is going to grow up with. She took measurements, and even took color swatches of the carpet and furniture to make sure we matched the color palette! She quickly mocked something up and a few days later I had a photoshopped mockup for approval. Once we approved it we setup a date and I paid the deposit. Marcus was the artist that was assigned to this project. He was so kind and wonderful in my home. He let my wife and I peek and see progress, and would check in with me if he had any questions. He's a really talented artist and executed my vision faithfully. At the end of the day my wife cried (with joy), we have our incredible mural and I couldn't recommend this company enough. We reached out to Hattas Public Murals to paint a mural for our newborn son's nursery. With a very special but also specific theme in mind, we were unable to find any traditional wall decor in stores that really matched our vision. The mural features a scene inspired from the book series ("The Prydain Chronicles"), a monogram, our son's name, and a quote from the author. Our son, like the hero from the books is also adopted, so the concept behind the design was especially emotional. My wife Lorie was looking for a company that could accurately represent our most favorite view of Half Dome (Yosemite National Park) on a side of the storage shed in her back yard that we had recently completed. When she contacted Jeanine, an appointment was made and she showed up on time. Lorie discussed the project, showed Jeanine several photos of Half Dome that we both loved and the project took life. After a few discussions and negotiations, the project was scheduled and it began. Ian was the artist who was selected to do the rendering and he was the perfect match for the project. He has been to Yosemite and was very familiar with the view that Lorie selected and was so excited to be chosen to do the mural. I can't begin to express the gratitude I have for Jeanine and her team at Hattas Studios. I just had a wall mural painted in my dining room that exceeds my expectations. From the initial concept (and several revisions) until the actual process began, it was an amazing experience. I also loved that the technique holds true to Renaissance era fresco painting--it was incredible to watch the result unfold before my eyes. I'm going to do my very best to be fair in reviewing the work Jeanine did for me. I'll bottom line it first and just recommend that, if you hire Jeanine, be careful. I'll start with the good. She has a very sweet, professional and competent demeanor. She'll be there on time, do her thing, leave no mess and it'll all run very smoothly. She's clearly talented enough to do good work a majority of the time. Now the bad... If she doesn't do a good job and you don't catch it right away, you very well might be left holding the bag. Unlike many other contractors I've had, Jeanine was not willing to admit her mistake and put some time into fixing it. I asked Jeanine to bid on painting a faded black map of the world on the wall behind my bed. Her quote was $1700. When I initially expressed concern over the cost, she told me that her daily rate was $850 and it would take her 2 days. I agreed and hired her. The first day, she showed up around 8am and left around 11:45am. She asked me if I liked the pre-glazed black map and I said yes because, taken as a whole, it looked good and I assumed it was technically accurate. She showed up the next day around 8:45 to do the glazing (vintage effect) and left around 12:30. She came by a few days later for about an hour to touch up the corners of the wall (make them darker). A few months later when I was just completing the final renovations to my new home, I had my friend over who's from Detroit. He liked the map, but he asked "What's this?" and pointed to the area on the US map that represents the Great Lakes. I said "Those are the Great Lakes". He said "Aren't there 5 Great Lakes?" In Jeanine's map, there were only 3 and the shape of those 3 weren't even accurate. That embarrassing moment caused me to look a little closer at the detail of Jeanine's work. After comparing it to the original picture I sent her and some real map pictures, it became obvious that she totally failed to accurately represent several parts of the world including leaving out 2 of the 5 great lakes, totally messing up the shape of the UK (that important country we liberated from to form ours), and adding some odd protruding shape (like a peanut still in its shell) to the border of Brazil that doesn't even exist on a real map. There are several other inaccuracies as well. When I called Jeanine out on this, she politely refused to fix it, reminding me that I had approved the map at the end of the first day and that it's a "work of art", which made me quite angry because I wanted a faded map, not an abstract map. She knows this. She gave another excuse that she couldn't fix it anyway because "once the glaze has been applied...". I had a faux finisher at my house weeks later who told me that was a weak excuse. Finally, she sent me a text with a picture of a black map that she used as the basis for my wall. It was an almost cartoon like version of a world map. So, basically Jeanine didn't care enough to come equipped with an accurate map to base my outline on, she worked 2 half-days + 1 hour and then left me with something that looks good from a distance but that has major distracting and embarrassing flaws. Then she wouldn't fix it. Bottom line...if you hire Jeanine, there's a pretty good chance you'll get something good. But if you don't, you better catch it before she's done or you could be screwed. Jeanine Hattas and her twin sister, Julie, completed two murals on opposite walls of a walk-through garden courtyard in my newly landscaped backyard. I am positively delighted with the results and enthusiastically recommend them to anyone who wants a mural in their home, garden, or place of business. Working with them was an absolute pleasure. They are not only talented, but thoroughly wonderful human beings in every way, inside and out. I learned about them and their mural business from a friend who recently had a large tropical mural painted on her home facing an entry garden patio. It was stunning and I knew I wanted a Hattas mural integrated into my new landscape design that was, at that time, still in the planning phase. Eventually, I contacted Jeanine and she came to my home to see the walls and discuss the mural concepts I had in mind. She's a good listener. She took notes and suggested details. It didn't take long for us to arrive at an exciting plan. She estimated that the murals would take only two days and gave me an extremely fair price. I was astonished with how fast she thought she could paint them and how reasonable her prices were...after all, each would be a unique and very large work of art! I happily agreed to the project, gave her a reasonable contract signing fee, and arranged a start day. Before that day arrived, Jeanine sent me digital draft images of the two murals. I liked them both quite a lot, but I still had a number of important revisions I wanted to see in the final products. I was able to explain these to her in a long email with images I'd downloaded from the Internet to demonstrate what I meant. She really appreciated those images! After a few days, Jeanine sent me a second mockup of the murals and these were perfect. I was thrilled. I knew the final products would be terrific. The first day, Jeanine and Julie worked together. They set up umbrellas to ease their exposure to the hot sun. They were tireless, working from very early (8:00 a.m.) to well past dusk. On the second day, Jeanine came alone, but by the end of a long day, both murals were mostly finished. Jeanine came back on a third day do some final artistic touches and then to apply a UV top-coating that I'd requested (as an add-on to the contract) in an effort to try to protect my now-very-precious murals from any excessive future sun damage...I wanted these murals bright and beautiful in my garden (and in my life) for as long as possible. Unfortunately, there was a minor problem with one of the murals after the top-coating dried: on that wall a milky film developed between the UV coating and the painting. We later found out (after discussions with the top-coating manufacturer) that this was because there had been moisture in the wall. And that was true; there is moisture in that garden wall because part of it at the base retains soil and plantings in my neighbor's yard. The mural is still lovely despite the subtle milkiness. Only I know that the colors are not as intense as they had been before the coating was applied. Virtually everyone who sees the artwork is impressed and charmed; they are totally unaware of the subtle milky film. Quite generously, Jeanine has offered to do anything to repair the problem. First, we are waiting a few months to see if the milkiness will go away on its own. If that does not happen, Jeanine will come back and paint a test spot over the UV-coating to see if that works to brighten the colors. If that holds up after a few months more of wait-and-see, then she'll come back and touch up the entire mural. Jeanine has been terrific and extremely accommodating about this. We will share the cost of any touch-up work. Here are some photos of my murals as well as a photo of Jeanine in front of one of them. Look at that big smile! She's so pleased with her job even at the end of a very long day. Note, one of the fox photos shows the mural before the top coating was applied. These murals make me happy every day...and they look terrific at night, too. I had my landscaper highlight them with wide "wall-wash" LED landscape lights. So, at night, my backyard is breathtaking...honestly, a real showpiece! It is not an overstatement to say that Jeanine, Julie, and these two murals have brought a great deal of joy into my life. read more
