Before coming to this branch of Value Village, my only experience with the chain had been in the US, so my perspectives may be a little skewed towards my experiences at those stores - after all, the many US VV's I've been to are my only comparison point. This Value Village is definitely by far the largest I've come across so far.. and falls about in the middle of the range when it comes to organization/cleanliness/fellow clientele/staff.. Whereas in the US one often has to deal with the local transient population, the shoppers here mostly seem lower middle class and especially a lot from the immigrant population. The prices here are about double of what the Value Village prices are in the US, which I found very disappointing..but Canada is an expensive country and one would expect a price increase, albeit not as much of a hike as this Value Village provides. Their used electronics and furniture sections also leave much to be desired, especially considering the size of the store As for the rest, I can only comment on the sections of the store I frequent, so here it goes; 1. Menswear: shirts/tops have a good selection, jeans not so much (the jeans are mostly ugly and 80s fashion). 2. Men's shoes: Well I wear size 13/14 shoes, and while every US Value Village has a rack for these sizes, this one does not..so plum out of luck there. 3. Collectibles and books sections are relatively large and well stocked. That about sums it up for now. so while I definitely recommend this store to people looking for unique costume items or t-shirts on a budget, one must just be careful to not be lulled into thinking that just because it's at Value Village that you're getting the best price.. Be savvy and realize that just like any other store, you still have to shop around and determine whether or not an item is really worth the money on the price tag.

I have to admit I shy away from this store. I find it overwhelming when I go in. It is huge and there is just so much stuff. I am not one to spend hours going through racks. I just get frustrated when I can not find anything. I have noticed on the few occasions that I have been asked to go with a friend that not everything is cheap. At least not cheap for used clothing in my opinion. So even though you are in a second hand store, you should still pay attention to what you are paying. I usually go to Value Village around Halloween time. They get some great costumes in. I do see the appeal of the store for those that can sift though racks, to find those hidden gems. I wish I could.

This is a huge store (over twice the size of their old location!) with a great selection, and generally pretty good prices.

Multiple workers complained about being underpaid and being poorly treated by management. I recently had a bad experience prompting me to voice my concern. I was outside the front door where a lady was yelling and screaming. She was smoking a pipe. Employees just stood by. The fact that this is just so normal to everyone there scares me. It makes a big difference when you're looking through the racks to have a friendly face telling you about the deals rather than feeling like you're in the way, which I've experienced at other thrift stores in the past. There are two floors to this shop - today the second floor was wedding themed, which was amazing. There were also formal dresses, jewellery, handbags and suits on display upstairs - anything you might need if you were going to or planning a wedding. It was fun poking through the wedding dresses and seeing right in front of you how much styles have changed throughout the decades! Downstairs there is a "front" that has racks of clothing and some jewellery and in the back, you'll find some homewares and yet even more clothing. Shoes, winter coats, and kids clothes are back there. The prices at Hand in Hand are amazing!! You won't find any almost-full-price goods here. If the item wasn't priced it was $4, and Friday's are student discount days! (Good to know!) We found an amazing hot pink pineapple print dress...definitely not for me, but one of our friends was so excited to be getting it. This is the kind of thrift store I enjoy being in - it really feels like you could find rare treasures here if you just had enough time.

The Long Version: Elsie's used to be in one of those colourful row homes along Queen St (it was at 1530 Queen St). That location was on multiple levels and was incredibly cramped. It had a bohemian feel and reminded me of all the vintage shops in Kensington Market (in Toronto) circa 1990s. I would go to that location every time I visited Halifax. On my most recent visit in September 2024, I went there to see the store was closed and all the colourful row homes along there had signs in the window warning of asbestos and only authorized personnel were allowed to enter. It looked like they were going to tear the buildings down for redevelopment. I was so disappointed, and took out my trusted phone to see when they closed. To my delight, I discovered they reopened on Grafton St and I immediately headed over. Their new location is inside the building that used to be St. Mary's School for Boys. It's much larger so the shop is actually spacious now and not cramped at all. The feel now is more contemporary consignment shop, similar to the ones in Westboro (in Ottawa) of the 2010s to present day. They have luxury brands now. I saw a Chanel purse for close to 10K. They had Gucci too. However, they have more accessible brands in the $40 range as well. I spoke with staff there and they told me they moved to this new location in April 2024. Still a fun shopping experience, but I walked away empty-handed this time. (183)

Vintage mixed with modern, many clothes new with tags and lots of designer pieces including Hermès. Incredibly soft cashmere sweaters. Elsie's has something for everyone and is a treasure in Halifax. I would highly recommend the store to anyone. Plus they welcomed our 4 Biewer terriers with open arms! A terrific spot

The Lost Cod is a fantastic idea for Halifax, and it could work in any city. The logos from old Halifax and Nova Scotia companies are freshened up and can be applied to shirts and hoodies. The price is reasonable, the clothing's good quality, and the worst part is that you can't fit all of the old-timey business logos on just one shirt.

I'm an electrical/power engineer and I had to get a t-shirt with the Nova Scotia Electric on it. They printed the logo on the shirt right in front of me with a hot press. Although I did wish they had a few more V necks to choose from. I went to the shop that was on the Harbourfront Boardwalk, i'd love to check out their Queen's Landing location someday too. I also purchased a couple of awesome stickers with some classic Nova Scotia and Halifax in particular logos. They even threw one in on the house. That my friends, is how you retain business and grow your customers through satisfaction!! Thanks so much guys!
